If YouTube playback seems to use too much memory in Firefox, first find out which Firefox tab or process is consuming it. Open about:processes or press Shift+Esc, sort by memory, and use the results to guide a few controlled checks. High memory use alone does not prove YouTube or Firefox is at fault, and there is no official universal RAM benchmark for YouTube playback.
Find the Firefox tab or process using memory
- Open Firefox’s process view by entering
about:processesin the address bar, or pressShift+Esc. - Sort the list by memory and look for the YouTube tab, another busy tab, or a process group using more than the others.
- Compare the result with what happens when you close or reload the apparent outlier. Treat the displayed figures as rough estimates, not a pass/fail benchmark.
Firefox groups enabled extensions in a shared content process. A large “Extensions” entry therefore shows combined use and does not identify a particular add-on. To pinpoint one, test extensions separately rather than assuming the group’s value names the culprit. Mozilla explains Firefox Task Manager and its process readings.
Check whether extensions, the theme, or graphics acceleration are involved
Firefox Troubleshoot Mode is a screening test, not a single-variable test: it temporarily disables extensions, switches to the default theme, and turns off hardware acceleration. If memory use improves in this mode, one or more of those changes may matter, but the result does not tell you which one.
- Open the Firefox menu, choose Help, then Troubleshoot Mode, and restart when prompted. Depending on the Firefox version, the Help menu may be under More troubleshooting information.
- Repeat the same YouTube activity and observe whether the memory pattern changes.
- If it does, return to normal mode and test extensions, theme, and hardware acceleration individually where practical. Change one factor at a time, restarting Firefox when required.
Hardware acceleration is not automatically something to disable. Mozilla says it can reduce CPU and memory use in many cases, but graphics hardware or drivers can also cause problems. If you suspect it—particularly when playback has graphics glitches—toggle the setting and restart Firefox to compare. The setting is under Settings → General → Performance; clear or select Use hardware acceleration when available for the test. Update Firefox and check the rest of the computer
- Update Firefox: Open the menu and choose Help → About Firefox. Install an available update and restart if requested; current releases may include performance improvements.
- Check other tabs and applications: Close unnecessary tabs and apps, then inspect your operating system’s resource monitor to see whether total memory pressure is coming from Firefox or elsewhere.
- Restart Firefox: If the browser has been open for a long time, restart it and compare the same workload.
- Use Firefox’s memory diagnostic: Enter
about:memoryin the address bar for additional memory information.

Do not treat a green YouTube player as a general RAM fix
YouTube’s help for a green video player recommends steps such as trying another browser, updating graphics drivers, and checking hardware-acceleration settings. That guidance is for the green-player playback symptom; it does not establish that those steps generally fix high RAM use. See YouTube’s troubleshooting page for a green video player.

When adding RAM is worth considering
Consider a hardware upgrade only if the operating system shows total memory remains close to its limit after you have checked Firefox, other applications, and the relevant settings. Mozilla describes adding RAM as a possible step in that situation and says, “Adding RAM will provide a huge performance boost.” That is general guidance, not a guarantee that an upgrade will fix a specific YouTube or Firefox problem.
