If Firefox stays open but stops responding in Windows 11, treat it as a hang and work through reversible tests before resetting your profile. Start by noting what triggers it, then use Firefox Troubleshoot Mode to test extensions, themes, and hardware acceleration. If Firefox closes unexpectedly, that is a crash and calls for different troubleshooting.

First, identify what freezes and when

Note the action that immediately precedes the freeze: a particular website, startup, video playback, or copying text. Also check whether only Firefox stops responding or whether Windows and other apps become unresponsive. That distinction helps determine whether to focus on Firefox or investigate a broader system problem; it does not by itself establish the cause.

If copying triggers the freeze

Mozilla lists a Windows 11-specific case in which Firefox may hang while copying when Suggested Actions is enabled. See Mozilla’s guidance for the Suggested Actions copying issue for current instructions. The reported symptom is a useful lead, but do not assume a particular Windows setting or workaround without following that article.

Tell a hang from a crash

A hang means Firefox remains open but ignores input. A crash means Firefox exits unexpectedly. If it closes, use Mozilla’s crash troubleshooting guidance rather than treating it as an ordinary freeze.

Try reversible fixes first

Restart the computer

Save work in other apps and restart Windows, then check whether the same action still freezes Firefox. A restart is a low-impact first test, not a guarantee of a fix.

Clear only the data relevant to the problem

For page-loading trouble, Mozilla suggests clearing cookies and cached web content; deleting cookies can sign you out or remove site data. For interface problems, try clearing Firefox’s startup cache. In either case, select only the items you intend to delete in the clearing dialog. These steps are targeted tests, not universal remedies for every hang. See Mozilla’s troubleshooting and diagnosis guide.

Use Troubleshoot Mode to isolate common causes

Troubleshoot Mode is a temporary diagnostic run, not a profile reset. Mozilla says it disables extensions, switches to the default theme, and turns off hardware acceleration, along with other customizations.

  1. Open the Firefox menu, choose Help, then Troubleshoot Mode.
  2. Choose the option to restart Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode.
  3. Repeat the action that usually causes the freeze.

If Firefox stops freezing in Troubleshoot Mode

One or more disabled features may be involved. Return to normal mode and test extensions, theme, and hardware acceleration individually where practical. To isolate extensions, disable them all and re-enable them one at a time, testing after each change. If you have many extensions, enable a portion at a time, then narrow down the group that brings the problem back. Change one factor at a time so the result is interpretable.

Rank #3

Mozilla’s guide, Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues, explains how to interpret this test. Hardware acceleration is one possible graphics-path cause in some configurations, not a universal explanation.

If Firefox still freezes in Troubleshoot Mode

That result points away from the extensions, theme, and hardware acceleration disabled by the mode. It does not prove Windows is at fault: preferences, profile data, or other causes may still be involved. Continue with resource checks before making a persistent profile change.

Check graphics settings and Firefox resource use

Test hardware acceleration directly

  1. In Firefox, open Settings → General → Performance.
  2. Uncheck Use recommended performance settings.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Restart Firefox and repeat the action that caused the hang.

If turning it off resolves the problem, Mozilla suggests updating the graphics driver using the graphics manufacturer’s instructions, or continuing without hardware acceleration. Driver changes are not a guaranteed fix; check whether the behavior changes after each step.

Look for a busy tab or extension

Open Firefox Task Manager from Menu → More Tools → Task Manager, or enter about:processes in the address bar. You can also use Shift+Esc. Sort by CPU or Memory and look for a tab or the Extensions entry using unusually high resources. The figures are rough estimates, and the shared extension process can aggregate enabled extensions, so a high reading alone does not prove a component is defective. Task Manager lets you close a tab or unload its contents.

Choose a repair only after the tests

These options make different changes. Start with a new profile if you want a clean comparison while keeping the existing profile available; refresh if you want to reset the current profile; reinstall if you suspect damaged program files.

Option What it tests or changes Effect on profile data
New profile Provides a clean environment for comparison Leaves the existing profile available; the new profile starts without the old profile’s data
Refresh Firefox Restores the profile to its default state Saves bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs and windows, passwords, cookies, and form autofill; removes extensions and themes and resets preferences
Reinstall Firefox Targets potentially damaged application files Mozilla’s documented reinstall process does not remove separately stored profile data

Create a new profile for a clean comparison

A new profile helps test whether the existing profile is involved without replacing it. Mozilla notes that profile files can be implicated even when a refresh does not resolve a problem. The new profile does not automatically contain the old profile’s data.

Refresh Firefox when a profile reset is appropriate

Refresh removes extensions and themes and resets preferences, so note extension names and custom settings first. Mozilla says the listed bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs and windows, passwords, cookies, and form autofill are saved. Review Mozilla’s Refresh Firefox instructions before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall if the program files may be damaged

Mozilla’s documented reinstall process is aimed at Firefox’s program files; profile data is stored separately. Follow Mozilla’s uninstall and Windows installation instructions rather than deleting profile folders as part of a routine reinstall.

When to ask for help

If Firefox continues to hang after these checks, post in the Mozilla Support community. Include when the hang occurs, whether it happens in Troubleshoot Mode, and what you have already tried. If Windows or other apps also become unresponsive, describe that separately so the issue is not assumed to be Firefox-only.
