Firefox is the clearer choice when you need documented background playback on Android. Mozilla’s current support guidance says media in a normal Firefox tab continues after you minimize the browser, and Android notification controls appear while audio or video is playing. There are important exceptions: media in private tabs is paused when Firefox is minimized, some sites stop their own players in the background, and Android battery or data restrictions can interrupt playback.
Chrome should not be described as incapable of background playback. Google has documented Android media notifications, but the material available for Chrome is from the Chrome 45 era and is not a current inventory of controls on every Android build. Chrome’s Media Session API documentation explains what a website can expose—metadata, play/pause, seeking, and track changes—but does not guarantee that every site or current Chrome installation presents those actions. In practice, test the site you use, then check Android’s notification, battery, and background-data settings if playback stops.

The practical distinction is evidence, not a claim that one browser can never do what the other does. Firefox has current, Android-specific support documentation for this use case. Chrome’s available official documentation is older or describes a web API rather than a guaranteed browser interface.
What “background playback” actually means
Background playback is audio or video that keeps running after Firefox or Chrome is no longer the foreground app. For example, you start a lecture in a browser tab, open a messaging app, and continue listening. The screen may be locked, the browser may be minimized, or another app may be visible.

Video can use a different model: picture-in-picture (PiP) keeps the video in a small floating window while you use another app. PiP is not the same as audio continuing invisibly in the background. A browser can support background audio while a particular video site declines to enter PiP, and Android permission controls whether PiP is allowed.
Three layers determine the result:
- The browser: whether it keeps the page or media session alive after being minimized.
- The website or player: whether its code deliberately pauses when visibility changes, and whether it supplies media-session metadata and actions.
- Android: notification permission, battery management, background-data policy, and PiP permission can all change what happens.
That is why a result on one site is not proof of universal browser behavior.
How Firefox for Android handles background media
Ordinary tabs can continue after you minimize Firefox
Mozilla’s Firefox for Android support page, updated April 9, 2025, says that minimizing Firefox while audio or video is playing allows it to continue in the background. Mozilla’s wording is deliberately qualified rather than universal: “If you minimize Firefox while playing video/audio, it will continue to play in the background, so you can multitask on your phone.”
That describes a normal browsing tab. Start playback, press Android’s Home button or switch to another app, and the media may continue while Firefox is not visible. The player still has to support background operation, and Android must not stop Firefox for power or data reasons.
Private-tab media is a documented exception
Firefox pauses media opened in a private tab when you minimize the browser. Mozilla states: “Firefox will pause playback for audio or videos that are open in your private tabs when you minimize it.” Do not use a private tab for a listening session if you need it to continue while multitasking.
Some websites pause themselves
Mozilla also notes that some websites or media players pause when Firefox moves into the background. A page may treat loss of visibility as a reason to stop, require a foreground video element, or enforce its own account, subscription, or device rules. If one site stops but another continues, that pattern points toward the site or player rather than a Firefox-wide failure.

Firefox exposes active media in Android notifications
When audio or video is actively playing, Firefox says controls appear in Android’s notification panel. The notification gives you a system-level way to pause or resume without returning to the browser. Android notification permission and the device manufacturer’s notification policy still apply; a browser cannot display a notification that Android has blocked.

Firefox’s Open Tabs view indicates which tabs are playing audio or video and provides a pause control beside the playing tab. This is useful when several tabs are open and you need to identify the source of sound without cycling through every page.
What the available Chrome evidence does—and does not—show
Chrome has documented Android media notifications
Chrome for Developers described media playback notifications on Android in a Chrome 45 Beta article dated July 20, 2015. That documentation said a notification could show the page title, provide play/pause, and take you back to the page that was playing. It also described a five-second threshold before the notification appeared.
This is useful historical context: Chrome has supported an Android media-notification model. It is not a current specification of the controls on every modern Chrome Android build. The article’s Chrome 45 context and age should be stated whenever those details are used.
The Media Session API belongs to the website
Chrome’s Media Session documentation explains how a web application can provide track or page metadata and respond to actions such as play, pause, seeking, and changing tracks. Those actions are supplied by the site’s player through the API. A site that does not implement the relevant handlers may expose only basic controls, regardless of which browser you use.
Media Session support therefore answers “what can a web player request?” rather than “what controls will every Chrome user see?” The operating system, browser version, site implementation, media type, and current playback state all matter.

Do not turn limited evidence into an absolute claim
The official material available here does not establish a universal rule that Chrome stops all background media, nor does it establish that current Chrome offers a particular fixed notification layout on every Android device. The responsible comparison is that Firefox’s current support documentation is clearer for this exact scenario, while Chrome requires a site-and-version test.
How to keep audio playing in Firefox on Android
- Open Firefox and load the audio or video site in a normal, non-private tab.
- Start playback and wait until the player is genuinely playing. A page that is paused, buffering indefinitely, or blocked by an account requirement cannot create a useful active-media session.
- Press Android’s Home button or switch to another app. Do not force-stop Firefox or swipe it away from the recent-apps screen while testing.
- Open the Android notification panel. Look for Firefox’s media notification and use its pause or play control.
- If you want video to remain visible, use the player’s PiP control or the Android PiP action instead of expecting invisible background audio to display a video.
If playback stops immediately, repeat the test on a second site. A second site that continues suggests a limitation or policy in the original player. If every site stops, move to the Android and Firefox checks below.
How to get Firefox media controls back in Android notifications
- Confirm that media is actively playing in Firefox, not merely loaded in a tab.
- Open Android Settings and locate Firefox in the app list or notification settings. Ensure Firefox notifications are allowed. Labels and exact paths vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.
- Check whether the device has a separate media-notification or lock-screen-media setting and allow it if the phone offers one.
- Return to Firefox, stop playback, start it again, and reopen the notification panel. Android may not create a media notification for a session that never entered active playback.
- Use Firefox’s Open Tabs view as a second check. A playing-tab indicator and pause button confirm that Firefox still considers the tab’s media active even if Android is hiding the notification.
Notification controls are not a promise of a particular set of skip, seek, or next-track buttons. Those actions depend on the player’s implementation and the controls Android chooses to present.

Battery Saver or app-specific battery restrictions
Android may suspend background activity to extend battery life. Battery Saver can be especially aggressive, and some manufacturers add their own per-app restrictions. Review Firefox’s battery setting in Android and remove unusually restrictive background limits if uninterrupted playback is important. Setting names and locations differ by device, so follow the labels on your phone rather than a fixed path from another Android version.
Data Saver and background-data limits
Streaming requires network access after Firefox leaves the foreground. Android Data Saver, a carrier data limit, or Firefox’s own background-data restriction can prevent the next chunk of audio or video from arriving. Check Firefox’s mobile-data settings and allow background data when your data plan and privacy preferences permit it.
The website’s visibility or player policy
Try another site without changing any Android settings. If the second site continues, the first player may intentionally pause when the browser is backgrounded. Autoplay permission, subscription status, DRM policy, or a player-specific visibility rule can all be involved.

Private browsing
If the tab is private, the observed pause is expected Firefox behavior when the browser is minimized. Reopen the page in an ordinary tab for a background-playback test.

Protected or DRM-controlled media
DRM-protected services can impose separate device, account, subscription, or regional requirements. A browser setting cannot bypass those requirements. If ordinary sites work but one protected service does not, consult that service’s supported-device and account rules rather than treating the result as a general Firefox limitation.

Picture-in-picture: a different way to multitask
PiP keeps a video visible in a small floating window while you use another app or tab. It is useful for watching rather than merely listening. Background audio, by contrast, leaves the video out of sight and keeps the sound running.
- Start a compatible video in Firefox in a normal tab.
- Use the player’s PiP command, or leave the video in the way your Android version uses to trigger PiP.
- If no floating window appears, open Android Settings, find Firefox’s picture-in-picture permission, and allow it.
- Test a different video. A site can decline PiP even when Android and Firefox are configured correctly.
Mozilla documents PiP for using Firefox while other apps or tabs are open, but the permission and the site’s player still control the result. Do not infer Android Chrome PiP behavior from desktop Chrome help instructions.

Autoplay controls whether a website may start media automatically. It does not guarantee that media will continue after Firefox is minimized, and changing it cannot force a site to ignore its own background policy.
Firefox’s global autoplay control is under Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay. Individual site exceptions can override the general choice. Use this setting to control unwanted starts or permit a site to begin playback when appropriate; do not treat it as a fix for media that stops only after you leave Firefox.

A fair way to compare Chrome and Firefox on your phone
- Use the same Android device, network, site, account state, and media item in both browsers.
- Test a normal tab first, then separately test private or incognito browsing. Do not assume the two browsers apply identical privacy rules.
- Start playback, minimize the browser, lock the screen, and switch to another app. Record exactly which transition causes the pause.
- Open Android notifications and note whether a media card appears and which actions it offers.
- Repeat with a second site to separate browser behavior from a player-specific rule.
- Run the test with Battery Saver and Data Saver settings documented, because changing those policies can change the result.
- For video, test PiP separately and verify the browser’s Android PiP permission.
This method avoids comparing a working audio player in one browser with a DRM-protected or foreground-only player in the other. It also avoids presenting a 2015 Chrome notification description as proof of current behavior.
Which browser should you choose?
Choose Firefox when documentation and predictable controls matter most
Firefox is the stronger fit if your priority is a browser whose current Android support guidance explicitly covers continuing media after minimization, identifies private-tab behavior, and explains where notification and Open Tabs controls appear. It still cannot override a site’s player policy or Android’s power and data restrictions.
Choose Chrome only after testing the sites you actually use
Chrome may work for your preferred player, and the available historical documentation shows that Android media notifications have existed in Chrome. However, the evidence here does not justify promising a particular current notification layout or action set. Test the current Chrome version on your device and site before making it your primary background-media browser.

Do not choose solely on a claim that one browser “always” works
No browser setting guarantees uninterrupted playback across every website, private-browsing mode, Android manufacturer policy, network condition, and DRM service. The useful decision is based on your own player tests and whether the browser’s documented behavior matches your needs.
Bottom line
For background playback and media controls on Android, Firefox has the clearer current official documentation: ordinary-tab media can continue when minimized, Android notifications can provide controls, and the Open Tabs view can pause a playing tab. Private tabs pause on minimize, some sites stop in the background, and Android battery or data policies can interrupt playback. Chrome should not be labeled incapable, but the official Android notification evidence available for it is historical, while its Media Session documentation describes site capabilities rather than guaranteed current controls. Test your specific site in the current browser version, then troubleshoot Android permissions and restrictions before blaming the browser.
