Firefox container tabs let you keep website data—such as sign-ins—separate between named browsing contexts. To enable them, open Settings, find the container-tabs option in the Tabs section, and turn it on if it is available. You can then open a container from the toolbar’s Containers panel or the New Tab button’s context menu. If the setting is missing, check your Firefox version or use Mozilla’s Multi-Account Containers extension.
Enable container tabs in Firefox

Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.

In General or the Tabs and browsing area, look for the Tabs section. The wording and layout can vary by Firefox version.

Turn on the option for container tabs if it appears.

Mozilla says the setting is not present in every Firefox version. If you cannot find it, update to Firefox 153 or later, or install Mozilla’s Multi-Account Containers extension, which enables container functionality automatically. Containers are unavailable in Private Browsing windows and when Firefox is set to Never Remember History. If the feature is inaccessible, check whether either restriction applies.
Open a tab or link in a container
Open a new container tab

Choose a container from the Containers panel in the toolbar, then open a tab in it.

Alternatively, right-click or long-press the New Tab button and choose a container.

Open a link in a container

Right-click the link you want to open.

Choose Open Link in New Container Tab.

Select the container to use.
Create and manage containers
Use the container manager to create a container and give it a recognizable name, color, and icon. With Multi-Account Containers, open the extension’s panel to manage containers; Mozilla also documents management through Firefox Settings. The extension can assign a website to a container so that site opens in the assigned container in future.

The extension can also sync container names and site assignments across devices signed in to a Mozilla account. That capability does not mean that every browsing detail or session is synced.
To add a container choice to a bookmark’s context menu, first allow the extension access to bookmarks, then enable its bookmark-menu preference.

Native container tabs or the extension?
Firefox’s built-in containers are suited to manually opening separate browsing contexts. Multi-Account Containers adds management and convenience features for people who want site assignments or cross-device syncing.

Mozilla documents Multi-Account Containers integration with Mozilla VPN as an optional, separate service. The integration works only when Firefox uses a non-sandbox installation method; Mozilla names Snap and Flatpak as sandbox installation methods. This VPN integration is distinct from container separation itself.
What container tabs do—and do not—separate
Container contexts keep website data separate from one another, so you can use different accounts on the same website in different containers. For example, you can keep a work account in one container and a personal account in another.
Containers do not hide your identity from the network or act as a VPN. Your IP address and device characteristics, including operating system and device manufacturer, persist across containers. They are for organizing browsing and separating site data, not for concealing network or device information.
