When Firefox will not fill a form, first identify which feature has failed. Firefox can remember text you previously typed, save and fill addresses or credit cards, and run optional AI form-filling extensions. These systems have different settings, field requirements, privacy implications, and failure modes.
Use a second ordinary form to determine whether the problem belongs to one website or to Firefox generally. Then check form-history retention, remove a bad stored entry, test with extensions disabled, and inspect software that may erase saved data. Address and card autofill require a separate diagnosis. If the problem began after Firefox 154.0, a reversible preference test may identify a specific regression.
Identify what “AI form filling” means in your Firefox
The phrase can describe three unrelated mechanisms. Choosing the wrong troubleshooting path is a common reason fixes appear not to work.
| Feature | What it fills | Where it is controlled | Typical failure clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary form history | Previously typed text in search boxes, names, comments, and other text fields | Settings > Privacy & Security > History | Old entries no longer appear in several unrelated forms |
| Address or credit-card autofill | Structured address fields or payment-card fields | Firefox’s autofill component, regional availability, and sometimes an administrator policy | Text suggestions work, but an address or card prompt never appears |
| Third-party AI extension | Fields selected by the extension, potentially using an AI service or OCR from an image | The extension’s settings, permissions, API configuration, and per-site controls | Only the extension’s button, sidebar, or selected fields fail |
Native form history is not an AI model. It simply offers values Firefox has stored from earlier typing. Native address and card autofill is also separate from that history. An AI extension adds another layer of software and may require access to page content.

Run a two-minute diagnosis before changing settings
- Open a second ordinary form. Use a basic search field or sign-up form on a different website. Avoid testing only the page that first failed.
- Type a distinctive value. Submit or leave the field according to the site’s normal behavior, then return to the field and type the first few characters again.
- Compare the result. If Firefox offers the value on the second site, the original site is probably defining its fields differently or preventing automated assistance. If no site offers suggestions, treat the issue as a browser-wide retention problem.
- Check which kind of data is missing. A missing name or search suggestion points to form history. A missing street address, telephone number, or card prompt points to the separate autofill component. A missing AI button or generated completion points to the extension.
Websites can use the HTML autocomplete attribute to identify the expected field type and indicate whether automated assistance should be offered. A page can therefore behave differently from an otherwise identical form without Firefox being damaged.
Fix Firefox form history when every site fails
Firefox must retain form history before it can suggest previously entered text. Check the retention settings first; changing advanced preferences before this check can hide the actual cause.
Verify that Firefox remembers form and search history
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the History section.
- In the history controls, make sure Firefox is configured to remember search and form history. If the main history choice is Use custom settings for history, expand the options and confirm that form data is not excluded.
- Close Settings, open a simple form, enter a new test value, and check whether that value is suggested after you leave and revisit the field.
If Firefox is set to use custom history settings, inspect the clearing controls as well. A browser can remember form data during a session and then delete it automatically when the last window closes, making the feature look unreliable the next time Firefox starts.

- Remain in Settings > Privacy & Security > History.
- Open the controls for clearing history when Firefox closes, if that option is enabled.
- Review the categories selected for deletion.
- Clear the selection for Form & Search History (the exact wording can vary slightly by Firefox release), then save the change.
- Restart Firefox and repeat the distinctive-value test.
Do not disable all privacy protections just to test one category. The relevant question is whether form data is being deleted; browsing history, cookies, cache, and site settings can remain governed by your existing policy.
Remove one incorrect or stale suggestion
A single malformed entry can make a field appear broken. For example, Firefox may keep offering an old spelling, an incomplete name, or a value that the site now rejects. Clear the problematic entry rather than wiping every saved form value.

- Click the affected field and type enough characters for the unwanted suggestion to appear.
- Use the keyboard arrow keys to highlight that suggestion. Do not submit the form.
- Use Firefox’s remove-entry command for the highlighted item. On many desktop installations this is Shift+Delete; if that shortcut does not work on your operating system or keyboard, use the context menu shown for the suggestion.
- Enter the corrected value, complete the form normally, and test the field again.
Removing a suggestion does not repair a site that deliberately blocks autocomplete, and it does not change saved addresses or cards. It only removes the selected form-history value.
Rule out extensions and security software
When form history fails on unrelated websites even though retention settings are correct, an extension or a privacy/security product may be interfering. Mozilla identifies extension conflicts as a possible cause of autocomplete failure across forms.

Test Firefox with extensions disabled
- Open the Firefox menu, choose Help, and select Troubleshoot Mode (the label may appear as Restart with Add-ons Disabled in some releases).
- Confirm the restart. Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables extensions and certain customizations; it does not remove your data.
- Open two ordinary forms and repeat the test.
- If suggestions return, restart Firefox normally and disable extensions one at a time. Test after each change until the conflicting extension is identified.
- Update, reconfigure, or remove the extension that changes page content, privacy behavior, password handling, or form controls.
Do not judge an AI extension while it is disabled. This test is for native form history and helps establish whether another add-on is intercepting fields.
Check products that clear browser data
Antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and privacy-cleaning tools can be configured to erase Firefox form history. Review their browser-cleaning or automatic-maintenance settings and exempt Firefox form data if you want suggestions to persist. If a work or school security profile controls these settings, you may need the administrator to change the policy.
After changing a security product, create a new test value, close Firefox normally, reopen it, and test again. A result that survives a restart but disappears after the security product runs points to deletion outside Firefox.

When only one website refuses to fill
A site-specific failure usually means the page’s form structure, labels, or autocomplete instructions do not match what Firefox recognizes. Sites can intentionally disable or limit automated assistance. This is different from a browser-wide loss of form history.

- Test a plain search field and a simple registration form on unrelated domains.
- Try another field of the same type on the original site, such as a second text box or a separate checkout step.
- Check whether the page is inside an embedded frame, pop-up, or single-page application; such layouts can expose fields differently from a normal document.
- Make sure the field is genuinely a text input. A custom control that looks like a text box may not expose the standard form metadata Firefox expects.
If other sites work, there is no browser-wide setting that can force the original page to accept a suggestion. Use the site’s own saved-profile feature, type the value manually, or report the field behavior to the site owner.
Do not confuse form history with address and card autofill
Address and credit-card autofill are separate components. Firefox may continue suggesting previously typed text while offering no address prompt, or it may show an address prompt only when a form contains enough recognizable fields. A missing prompt alone does not prove that form history is broken.
Conditions that affect address prompts
- The form must contain a sufficient set of fields for Firefox to identify an address or payment-card structure.
- Field names and the page’s
autocompletemetadata must be recognizable. - Availability can depend on the user’s region and the Firefox edition or release.
- Some organizations control whether addresses can be saved or filled.
Test address autofill on a complete, ordinary checkout or delivery form rather than a page containing one unlabeled box. If text-history suggestions work there but no address prompt appears, continue with the address-autofill and policy checks instead of repeatedly clearing form history.
Check for an administrator policy on managed computers
On an organization-managed computer, Firefox policies can override a user’s choices. The AutofillAddressEnabled policy can force address saving and autofilling on or off. Mozilla’s administrator reference lists support beginning with Firefox 125, ESR 115.10, and Enterprise 149.

What a policy override looks like
- The address-autofill control is unavailable, locked, or keeps reverting after you change it.
- Several users on the same managed installation see identical behavior.
- Generic form history works, but address saving or filling is consistently disabled.
Ask the person who manages the device or browser policy whether AutofillAddressEnabled is configured. Do not try to bypass a workplace or school policy by editing protected files or advanced settings; the administrator must decide whether address data may be stored.
If the problem started after Firefox 154.0
A Mozilla Bugzilla discussion about autofill after Firefox 154.0 records a targeted workaround. It is a diagnostic for the affected regression, not a universal repair.
- Open a new tab and enter
about:config. - Accept the warning only if you understand that advanced preferences can change Firefox behavior.
- Search for
signon.storage.rust.enabledand record its current value. - Set
signon.storage.rust.enabledtofalse. - Search for
extensions.formautofill.useml, record its current value, and set it tofalse. - Restart Firefox and test the same complete address form.
Record both original values before changing them. If the workaround has no effect, restore the recorded values rather than leaving unrelated preferences disabled. If it does help, update Firefox when a newer release is available and retest; a version-specific workaround should not become a permanent assumption about how autofill is supposed to work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the problem is an AI form-filling extension
If you installed an add-on that claims to fill forms with AI, diagnose it separately from Firefox’s native features. Mozilla Add-ons lists an extension named “AI Form Filler” that describes individual-field filling, image/OCR input, Firefox for Android availability, and per-site controls. Its listing also says that a user-supplied API key is stored locally.
Verify the extension itself
- Open the Firefox menu, choose Add-ons and themes, and select Extensions.
- Confirm that the extension is installed, enabled, and not blocked for the current site.
- Open the extension’s settings and verify any required API key, model selection, or site-specific permission.
- Test one ordinary text field at a time before trying image/OCR input or a multi-step checkout.
- Reload the page after changing a permission or setting, then run the extension again.
Per-site controls can make an extension appear broken on one domain while it works elsewhere. An extension may also fail when a page uses an embedded frame, a custom control, or a field that the add-on does not support.

Review permissions before trusting an AI filler
The Add-ons listing for “AI Form Filler” declares broad website permissions and collection of personally identifying information and website content. Those disclosures matter because a form can contain names, addresses, account identifiers, health details, or payment information.
- Read the extension’s current permissions and data-use disclosure on its Mozilla Add-ons listing before installation or continued use.
- Grant access only to sites where you genuinely need the feature, if the extension provides per-site controls.
- Do not paste payment-card numbers, passwords, recovery codes, or government identifiers into an AI workflow unless you have evaluated the extension, its service provider, and the destination policy.
- Remove the extension when you no longer need it and revoke its site access.
AI assistance is optional. Native form history and native address autofill can remain useful without installing an add-on, and disabling an extension is a reversible way to determine whether it is causing the failure.
Choose the least invasive fix
| Observed result | Most likely area | Next action | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suggestions work on another site | Original site’s field structure or autocomplete instructions | Use the site’s profile tools or report the field; do not reset Firefox globally | No browser change required |
| No suggestions anywhere | Form-history retention or shutdown clearing | Check Privacy & Security > History and clearing settings | Settings can be changed back |
| One stale value causes trouble | Incorrect stored entry | Remove only the highlighted suggestion | Limited; other entries remain |
| Native features return in Troubleshoot Mode | Conflicting extension | Re-enable add-ons one at a time to identify it | Fully reversible |
| Text history works but address prompt does not | Address-autofill requirements, region, or policy | Use a complete structured form and check management controls | Depends on policy |
| Failure began after Firefox 154.0 | Possible autofill regression | Test the two recorded about:config changes, then restore or update |
Reversible when original values are recorded |
| Only an AI extension fails | Extension permission, configuration, or unsupported field | Check its settings, per-site access, and data disclosures | Disable or remove the add-on |
Prevent future form-filling surprises
- Keep Firefox current, especially after using a release-specific workaround.
- Before clearing browser data, check whether the cleaning action includes form and search history.
- When troubleshooting, change one setting at a time and record the original value of every advanced preference.
- Use a harmless test value rather than real payment, identity, or health information.
- On managed devices, identify the administrator policy before attempting local changes.
- Review an AI extension’s permissions and data practices whenever it gains access to a new site.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Contact the website when only its fields fail and other forms work. Contact the device or browser administrator when a policy locks the behavior or security software repeatedly deletes entries. Consider a Firefox support report when the same complete form fails across a clean profile, with extensions disabled and retention enabled, particularly if the failure tracks a specific Firefox release.
Keep the diagnostic details: Firefox version and edition, operating system, whether the issue affects form history or address/card autofill, the test sites used, whether Troubleshoot Mode changes the result, and any policy or security software involved. Those details distinguish a site implementation problem from a browser regression without exposing the values you typed.
