Firefox 158, released to the release channel on October 13, 2026, adds JPEG XL (JXL) as a regular browser feature. Mozilla previously exposed JXL as an experiment in Firefox 152, so this release moves the format from a Labs trial into documented mainstream support.
What changed in Firefox 158?
Mozilla’s Firefox 158 release notes state: “Firefox now supports the JPEG XL image format, which generally has better compression than WebP, JPEG, PNG, and GIF.” That is the important change: users running the release build no longer have to rely exclusively on an experimental Firefox Labs switch to decode JXL images.
Firefox 152, first offered on June 16, 2026, introduced JPEG XL as an experimental feature and directed users to enable it through the Firefox Labs panel in Settings. Firefox 158, first offered on October 13, lists support in the normal release notes instead.
What is JPEG XL?
JPEG XL is an image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. It is designed for both lossy and lossless images and for modern image-delivery needs, including high-quality imagery. The format can target smaller files at comparable visual quality, or preserve more image information at a given size.

Mozilla’s release note makes a general compression claim, not a guaranteed percentage reduction. File size depends on the source image, encoder, quality setting and whether the image is saved losslessly. There is no single improvement figure that applies to every picture.
MDN’s technical reference describes JPEG XL as having no known royalty-bearing patents for the format. That may reduce licensing uncertainty, but it does not by itself guarantee that every browser, content-management system or image pipeline supports JXL.

Does Firefox support JXL files now?
Yes, Firefox 158 release builds support JPEG XL decoding as a normal browser capability. A site or local file that supplies a valid JXL image can therefore be displayed by an up-to-date Firefox installation without enabling Firefox Labs first.
Mozilla’s implementation plan identified the Rust decoder jxl-rs, the preference image.jxl.enabled, and support across all platforms. The intent-to-ship notice was an engineering plan; Firefox 158’s release notes are the evidence of what reached the release channel.

How to enable or troubleshoot JPEG XL in Firefox
Most Firefox 158 users should not need to change a setting. If JXL decoding was disabled manually or you are testing an earlier build, use these checks:
- Check the version: open the Firefox menu, choose Help, then About Firefox. Update to Firefox 158 or a later release if an update is offered.
- For Firefox 152-era builds: open Settings, select Firefox Labs, and enable the JPEG XL experiment. The Labs route applies to that experimental implementation, not to the regular Firefox 158 release experience.
- Check the preference: type
about:configin the address bar, accept the warning, search forimage.jxl.enabled, and set it totrueif it has been changed tofalse. Avoid changing unrelated preferences. - Test the file itself: confirm that the file really uses a JXL-compatible extension or MIME type and is not a damaged download. A browser setting cannot repair a corrupt image.
Is JPEG XL better than WebP, JPEG, PNG or GIF?
JPEG XL’s design gives it a strong technical position, but “better” depends on the image and the delivery environment. Firefox’s wording is that JXL generally has better compression than the four older or competing formats below; it does not promise a universal win in every encode.

The practical trade-off is compatibility. MDN’s compatibility information records Chrome support in a flag-gated context, so a developer should not assume that a JXL-only image will display for every visitor.

Not safely as a single universal asset yet. A production site should detect support or provide a fallback such as WebP, JPEG or PNG. The usual approach is to offer JXL first where it is known to work, then retain an established format for browsers that do not advertise JXL support. Test the complete path: server MIME type, CDN transformations, caching, image optimization, accessibility text and the behavior of older browser versions.

Keep the original source image when converting. JXL can be lossless, but converting an already compressed JPEG into another lossy format may preserve existing artifacts rather than restore detail. Compare visual quality and actual encoded sizes on the site’s own image set instead of relying on a headline percentage.
Why Firefox’s move matters beyond Firefox
A mainstream browser implementation gives JPEG XL more practical reach: developers can test a stable release, users can open JXL files without a hidden experiment, and image-tool authors have a clearer target for interoperability. It does not instantly make JXL universal. Browser support, operating-system viewers, editing applications and server pipelines still determine whether a publisher can remove fallbacks.
For now, the sensible migration strategy is incremental: keep a proven fallback, measure real file sizes and visual results, and expand JXL delivery as compatibility data from your audience justifies it.
