Firebase Studio is Google’s cloud-based development environment for building and sharing applications. Bytes issue #419, published August 26, 2025, presented it as the renamed Project IDX and highlighted Gemini CLI, Firebase service setup, MCP integrations, and temporary public previews. Some details—especially the command-line tool’s name—have since changed, so the issue is best read as a snapshot of the product in 2025.

What is Firebase Studio?

Firebase Studio is a browser-based development environment that brings coding tools and Firebase-related workflows into a cloud workspace. In its August 26, 2025 issue, Bytes described Firebase Studio as the renamed Project IDX. The newsletter’s characterization is useful context, but feature details should be distinguished from official Firebase documentation and dated accordingly.

What did Bytes #419 highlight?

The issue focused on four ways Firebase Studio could support development: a command-line AI assistant in the terminal, Firebase service setup from prompts, external tool connections through MCP, and temporary sharing of development servers or previews.

Firebase services from a prompt

Bytes reported that Firebase Studio could set up Authentication, Firestore, and Cloud Storage in response to a prompt. That combined workflow is described in the newsletter; the official Firebase posts cited here do not independently confirm that specific capability. Treat it as the issue’s report rather than a guarantee that every project or current Studio configuration supports it.

Gemini CLI was a historical integration

Firebase’s July 22, 2025 post said Gemini CLI was preinstalled in Firebase Studio and could be launched from a terminal with gemini. It also documented non-interactive use with --prompt or -p. The page has since been updated to point to an Antigravity CLI transition, so those Gemini CLI instructions describe the earlier integration and should not be assumed to be the current setup. Check the Firebase CLI workflow post and its migration guidance for current naming and instructions.

How does MCP work in Firebase Studio?

Model Context Protocol (MCP) provides a standardized way for an AI development environment to connect to external tools and data sources. Firebase’s July 9, 2025 documentation describes Firebase Studio as the host/client and an MCP server as the external connection. This extends the environment; it is not unrestricted access to every MCP server.

Configure an MCP server

  1. In the workspace, create or edit .idx/mcp.json, the configuration file documented by Firebase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Add the MCP server configuration using a supported transport: stdio or SSE/Streamable HTTP. Firebase’s post documents these transports for servers without special authentication.

  3. Use an MCP server that can run within Firebase Studio’s constrained virtual machine. Servers that require a graphical interface or desktop session are not supported.

For configuration details and the documented limits, see Firebase’s MCP server setup guide.

Can you share a preview without deploying it?

Yes. Firebase Studio public ports can make a development backend or app preview temporarily accessible for feedback and testing. Firebase says access lasts while the workspace is active; the underlying virtual machine typically runs for a few hours. This is short-lived development sharing, not production hosting or a substitute for deploying an application to a dedicated service.

Use public ports when someone needs to inspect a working preview or reach a development server during an active workspace. For a public app that must remain available independently of that workspace, use a production deployment instead. See Firebase’s public ports documentation for the feature’s behavior and limits.

How to interpret the 2025 feature roundup

Bytes #419 captures a moment when Firebase Studio was expanding beyond a cloud coding workspace through Firebase-oriented workflows, AI assistance, external tool connections, and temporary sharing. Its description of product direction and the prompt-based service setup comes from the newsletter; Firebase’s official posts provide the more specific documented instructions for MCP, public ports, and the then-current Gemini CLI integration. Because the CLI page now notes a transition, confirm the live documentation before following older commands.
