If surround sound stopped after Fire TV’s 2026 interface appeared, treat the update as a timing clue rather than proof that Amazon removed Dolby support. Work through Fire TV’s diagnostics, verify what each device detects, then correct the HDMI route and audio format. The exact menus vary by Fire TV model, and Audio/Video Diagnostics is unavailable on some devices.
What the 2026 Fire TV redesign changed
Amazon says the redesigned Fire TV interface began rolling out in February 2026 and is now available worldwide on current-generation Fire TV Stick devices and Amazon Ember smart TVs. It also launched on Hisense Fire TV televisions, with more devices planned. The redesign uses rebuilt layouts, rounded corners, new typography and spacing, plus a long-press Home shortcut panel with audio and display controls. Amazon reports speed gains of up to 20–30% on devices customers already own and says more than 300 million Fire TV devices have been purchased worldwide.
Amazon’s announcement does not say that the redesign removes Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1 output. A failure that began after the interface arrived can therefore indicate a changed setting, HDMI handshake or capability detection elsewhere in the chain—not a documented removal of surround support.

1. Run Fire TV’s built-in diagnostic
- Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics.
- Start the Troubleshoot Audio/Video Issues flow and choose No Audio when prompted, even if the symptom is stereo rather than silence.
- Follow the on-screen checks. Restart Fire TV if the problem remains.
Some Fire TV models do not offer Audio/Video Diagnostics. If that menu is missing, continue with the equipment and connection checks below.

2. Check the formats Fire TV actually detects
Look at the formats presented by the diagnostic or audio settings. If Dolby Digital, Dolby Atmos or the required surround format is not listed, Amazon says the current equipment setup cannot play it. Check every link: the Fire TV device, television, soundbar or AV receiver, speakers and the app’s available audio track. Atmos also requires compatible height-speaker hardware or an Atmos-capable soundbar/receiver; a cable change cannot add that capability.
- Confirm the TV’s labeled HDMI port is the one supporting ARC or eARC.
- Confirm the soundbar or receiver is switched to the HDMI input carrying Fire TV.
- Choose content that actually offers a 5.1, 7.1 or Atmos track; stereo programming will remain stereo.
- Check whether your streaming-app subscription and selected title include the higher-format track.
3. Replace optical or marginal HDMI connections
Use a high-speed HDMI cable for multichannel formats. Amazon states that optical cables do not fully support surround sound, so optical is a likely bottleneck for Atmos and some higher-bandwidth configurations.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
For a difficult HDMI handshake, connect Fire TV directly to an HDMI input on the soundbar or AV receiver, then connect that device to the television’s HDMI ARC input. This avoids relying on the TV to pass every format from an input to its ARC/eARC output. If your receiver or soundbar lacks a suitable HDMI input, the TV may remain the only route, and its ARC/eARC and pass-through limits determine the result.
4. Select an output mode your chain supports
On Fire TV Smart TV models, open Settings > Display & Audio and review Digital Audio Format. The available choices are:

| Mode | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| PCM | Outputs decoded PCM audio; it is the broadest compatibility option but may be stereo depending on the device and source. | Use for basic TV or receiver compatibility when bitstream formats fail. |
| Dolby Digital | Requests Dolby Digital output where supported. | Use when the soundbar or receiver specifically supports Dolby Digital but not newer formats. |
| Passthrough | Can carry up to 7.1 channels when the connected equipment supports them. | Use with a capable HDMI receiver or soundbar that should decode the source format. |
| Auto | Selects a format based on the connected device’s reported capabilities. | Use when HDMI capability detection is working correctly. |
Passthrough and Auto preserve multichannel output only when every relevant device, port and cable supports the format. If Auto falls back to stereo, test Passthrough; if that produces silence, return to Auto or PCM and investigate the handshake and receiver compatibility.
5. Check Dolby output and app selection
Amazon’s developer guidance places the Dolby control at Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio > Dolby Digital Output. Review that setting after changing the routing or cable. Apps are expected to detect the endpoint’s capabilities and either select a non-Dolby stream or decode to PCM when the endpoint cannot handle Dolby. That behavior can make a title appear stereo even though Fire TV itself is operating normally.

6. Rebuild Alexa Home Theater only after the HDMI path works
Alexa Home Theater is a separate wireless-speaker configuration, not a repair for a failed TV-to-soundbar HDMI link. Supported combinations include Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick 4K Plus with compatible Echo Studio (2025), Echo Dot Max and Echo Sub devices. Mixed Echo speaker models are not supported.

- Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Alexa Home Theater.
- Select Create Alexa Home Theater.
- Choose Home Theater as Audio Output.
- Use Lip Sync Tuning if voices lag behind the picture.
Supported configurations can use up to five Echo speakers and one optional subwoofer. If a speaker model is not on the supported list, or the group mixes incompatible models, the setup may not appear or may fail to deliver the expected channels.

| Symptom | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Only stereo is offered | Check detected formats, app audio track, subscription level and whether the TV or receiver reports multichannel capability. |
| No sound after switching to Passthrough | Return to Auto or PCM, then verify the receiver’s HDMI input, ARC/eARC port and cable. |
| Atmos disappeared but 5.1 works | Check Atmos support on every component, the HDMI route and the title’s Atmos track; optical connections are insufficient. |
| Soundbar has no audio through the TV | Connect Fire TV directly to the soundbar/AVR, then run HDMI from that device to the TV’s ARC input. |
| Alexa speakers are delayed | Select Home Theater as Audio Output and run Lip Sync Tuning. |
What the update did—and did not—prove
The 2026 interface rollout changed navigation and exposed audio controls, but Amazon has not documented it as disabling surround sound. The reliable recovery path is to establish the detected capabilities first, use high-speed HDMI rather than optical, route Fire TV directly to a capable soundbar or receiver when the TV blocks formats, and select Auto or Passthrough only when the complete chain supports the desired audio.
