Choose the Roku Streaming Stick 4K if Dolby Vision is essential to your TV setup. Choose the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) if you prioritize Alexa, Amazon’s Fire TV interface, Wi‑Fi 6, or Amazon-device integration. Both stream 4K video, but they differ in HDR formats, wireless specifications, remote features, hardware disclosures, and software experience.

Check the model number before buying. This comparison covers Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) and Roku Streaming Stick 4K model 3820R2. Roku’s broader current product page also shows model 3840R, so a listing that says only “Streaming Stick 4K” may not be the exact device discussed here.

Quick answer: which streamer fits your priorities?

If your priority is… Better match Why
Dolby Vision Roku Streaming Stick 4K (3820R2) Roku lists Dolby Vision as well as HDR10+; the Fire TV model’s listed HDR formats are HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.
Alexa and Amazon device control Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) It uses the Fire TV experience and Alexa voice control.
Roku’s interface and voice search Roku Streaming Stick 4K It uses Roku’s platform and includes a voice-search remote.
Documented wireless standard Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) Amazon specifies Wi‑Fi 6. Roku describes a long-range Wi‑Fi receiver but does not name a Wi‑Fi generation on the product information used here.
TV power, volume, and mute buttons on the remote Roku Streaming Stick 4K Roku’s included remote is described as controlling compatible TV power, volume, and mute functions.
Lowest observed promotional price Roku, in one dated offer A dated US comparison listing showed $44.99 for a limited time against a $79.99 reference price. That offer may have ended.

Neither device can create an HDR format your television or the video service does not support. A compatible 4K TV, the correct HDMI input, and content mastered in the relevant format are all required.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K model 3820R2

The Roku device covered here is model 3820R2. Roku’s current general Streaming Stick page also displays model 3840R, representing a newer member of the broader Streaming Stick family. A retailer title that omits the model number can therefore combine information from different generations.

Roku’s current product information describes the stick as compact, gives a weight of 0.90 ounces (26 grams), and highlights long-range Wi‑Fi. It does not provide a processor speed or internal-storage figure in the specifications used for this comparison.

“Not stated” does not mean a component is absent. It means the manufacturer information available for this model comparison does not publish that particular figure, so it should not be guessed from another generation.

Picture quality: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and 4K

Roku has the documented Dolby Vision advantage

Roku lists both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision for the Streaming Stick 4K. Dolby Vision can provide scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame brightness and color metadata when the television, streaming app, and title all support it. For a Dolby Vision television owner who wants the stick to pass through that format, Roku is the safer choice between these two models because Dolby Vision is explicitly listed.

Fire TV supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG

Amazon lists HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG for the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026). HDR10 is the widely supported baseline HDR format. HDR10+ adds dynamic metadata on compatible equipment, while HLG is used primarily for compatible broadcast and live-video workflows.

The Fire TV model’s published format list does not include Dolby Vision. Do not assume that a television’s Dolby Vision support will cause this stick to output Dolby Vision; the streamer must support the format as well.

What your television and content must support

  • The TV must support 4K and the specific HDR format. Some sets support HDR10 but not HDR10+, Dolby Vision, or HLG.
  • The HDMI input may need an enhanced, deep-color, or UHD mode enabled in the television settings before 4K HDR is accepted.
  • The streaming service and individual title must be offered in 4K and in the desired HDR format. A 4K subscription tier or title is not guaranteed to use every HDR standard.
  • Picture settings, ambient light, and the TV panel itself affect the visible result. A format label is a capability, not a promise that every scene will look better.

Roku’s stated 4K resolution is 3840×2160, which is four times the pixel count of 1920×1080 HD. That describes output resolution; it does not guarantee that a source video was captured or mastered at native 4K.

Speed and responsiveness

What Amazon claims

Amazon says its own comparison found that the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K reached content “nearly 20–40% faster” than a similarly priced 4K stick from another leading brand. This is an Amazon test claim, not an independent head-to-head benchmark against Roku model 3820R2.

The same announcement identifies the Fire TV device’s quad-core 1.7 GHz processor and 8 GB storage. Those figures help explain the hardware platform, but clock speed alone does not determine how quickly an interface opens an app. App optimization, memory management, network latency, advertising loads, and the TV’s HDMI behavior also influence the time you perceive.

What cannot be concluded

There is no comparable independent timing result in the available specifications for Roku model 3820R2. You can reasonably say that Fire TV has a documented manufacturer performance claim and named processor, but you cannot turn the 20–40% figure into a universal statement that Fire TV is always faster than Roku.

Wireless performance and connectivity

Fire TV: a named Wi‑Fi 6 standard

Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) supports Wi‑Fi 6. A compatible Wi‑Fi 6 router can improve efficiency in busy networks and may reduce contention when many devices share airtime. Actual throughput still depends on distance, walls, interference, router configuration, internet service, and the streaming service’s delivery path.

Roku: long-range reception without a generation claim

Roku describes the Streaming Stick 4K as having a long-range Wi‑Fi receiver for stronger streaming farther from the router. Roku does not name a Wi‑Fi generation in the product information used here. The long-range description is not a controlled speed test and should not be interpreted as proof that Roku is faster or slower than Wi‑Fi 6.

Practical placement advice

  • Use the HDMI extension, if included with your exact package, when the television’s chassis blocks the stick or its wireless signal.
  • Keep either stick away from crowded cable bundles, metal furniture, and other high-interference locations.
  • For persistent buffering, test the network at the television location before blaming the streamer. A strong internet plan cannot remove a weak signal between the router and the TV.
  • If only one app buffers, compare another app on the same stick; the problem may be service-specific rather than a hardware limitation.

Operating systems, voice control, and remotes

Fire TV and Alexa integration

The Fire TV Stick 4K uses Amazon’s Fire TV experience and Alexa voice control. It is the natural fit if you already use Alexa speakers, routines, or other Amazon devices and want one voice ecosystem for searching, launching compatible apps, or controlling supported smart-home equipment.

Rank #3

  • Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.

Fire TV’s home screen, recommendations, settings, and account prompts are built around the Fire TV platform. Buyers who prefer Amazon’s content organization should expect a shorter learning curve than someone moving between unrelated ecosystems.

Roku’s interface and voice-search remote

The Roku Streaming Stick 4K uses Roku’s interface and includes a voice-search remote. Roku’s remote is the better match if you prefer Roku’s channel-oriented navigation or want dedicated TV power, volume, and mute controls in the same handset, provided your television is compatible with those controls.

Voice search is not the same ecosystem as Alexa. If household members already use Roku devices, keeping the same platform can simplify account setup and remote habits.

Apps and regional availability

Streaming-app catalogs, subscription requirements, live-channel offerings, and voice features vary by country. Check that every service you pay for is available on the exact device and in your market. A service’s presence on one platform does not guarantee identical app features, picture formats, profiles, or release timing on the other.

Power, ports, and first-time setup

Set up the Fire TV Stick 4K

  1. Confirm that the box or listing identifies “Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026)” rather than another Fire TV Stick generation.
  2. Insert the stick into an available HDMI port on the television. Use the supplied HDMI extension if the television’s layout leaves too little clearance.
  3. Connect the included cable for direct power through a compatible TV USB port, following the power instructions supplied with the device.
  4. Turn on the television and select the HDMI input used by the stick.
  5. Complete the on-screen network, account, remote, and software-update steps.
  6. Open a known 4K title and verify the television reports the expected resolution and HDR mode. If it reports only HD, troubleshoot the TV input, cable path, network, and title availability before assuming the stick is defective.

Set up the Roku Streaming Stick 4K

  1. Verify that the listing identifies Roku Streaming Stick 4K model 3820R2, not model 3840R or another Streaming Stick generation.
  2. Plug the stick into the television’s HDMI port. Use the included HDMI arrangement or extension where necessary to clear the TV chassis.
  3. Attach the included USB-C-to-USB-A power cable to a suitable USB power connection as directed by Roku’s setup instructions.
  4. Select the matching HDMI input on the television and pair the remote when prompted.
  5. Connect to Wi‑Fi, sign in or create the required Roku account, and install updates.
  6. Play a title labeled for 4K and the HDR format your television supports, then confirm the TV’s information panel shows the expected mode.

Menus and account prompts can change with software updates. The exact package contents can also vary by market, so check the box before discarding cables or adapters.

Price and value

Device Documented price evidence How to interpret it
Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) US$59.99 launch price in Amazon’s 2026 announcement A dated launch figure, not a guarantee of the current price or of future discounts.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K US$44.99 limited-time offer in a dated comparison listing, against a US$79.99 reference price A promotional offer that may have expired; verify the live checkout total, model number, shipping, and taxes.

Prices change by country, retailer, bundle, and promotion. Compare like-for-like packages: a remote with TV controls, an HDMI extension, or a different generation can change the value even when the product names look nearly identical.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Mistaking a similar model for the one tested in a listing

Search results often collapse multiple generations into one product title. Read the model identifier printed on the listing, packaging, or device information screen. For this comparison, look specifically for Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) and Roku 3820R2.

Expecting Dolby Vision from a non-Dolby-Vision chain

Check all three links: the stick, the TV, and the title or app. If any one lacks Dolby Vision, the playback will use another available format. On a Roku setup, verify that the title is actually offered in Dolby Vision; on Fire TV, remember that Dolby Vision is not in the listed format support for this model.

Assuming every 4K title uses HDR10+ or HLG

HDR format support is title-dependent. A 4K stream may use HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG, or SDR depending on the service and program. Confirm the title’s badge and the television’s reported signal rather than inferring the format from the streamer’s box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpreting wireless marketing as a speed guarantee

Wi‑Fi 6 is a named technical standard, while Roku’s long-range receiver description addresses reception design. Neither label replaces a real-world check of router placement, interference, internet capacity, and service congestion.

Ignoring power and HDMI limitations

A stick that is physically blocked, poorly powered, or connected to an HDMI input without the required 4K mode can appear unreliable. Re-seat the HDMI connection, use the supplied cable arrangement, select the correct input, and check the television’s USB and UHD settings before replacing the device.

Decision guide by household scenario

Buy the Fire TV Stick 4K when…

  • You use Alexa and want voice control aligned with your existing Amazon devices.
  • Your router supports Wi‑Fi 6 and you want a streamer with that wireless standard explicitly listed.
  • Your television supports HDR10+ or HLG and does not require Dolby Vision.
  • You prefer the Fire TV interface and Amazon account integration.
  • The current price is competitive after checking that the listing is the 2026 third-generation model.

Buy the Roku Streaming Stick 4K when…

  • Your television supports Dolby Vision and you want the streamer to list it explicitly.
  • You prefer Roku’s interface, voice search, and channel navigation.
  • You want compatible TV power, volume, and mute controls on the included remote.
  • Your router location makes a long-range receiver useful, while recognizing that Roku does not publish a Wi‑Fi generation for this product information.
  • A verified sale price makes the exact 3820R2 package better value than the Fire TV alternative.

Pause before buying either one when…

  • Your TV is 1080p or lacks the HDR format you care about; the stick cannot upgrade the panel.
  • Your country’s required streaming apps or live services are missing from the platform.
  • The retailer will not identify the model number or clearly state what remote and power accessories are included.
  • Your network is the real bottleneck. A new stick will not fix weak Wi‑Fi coverage or an overloaded internet connection.

Final verdict

There is no universal winner. Roku Streaming Stick 4K model 3820R2 is the more defensible choice for Dolby Vision, Roku’s interface, voice search, and an all-in-one TV-control remote. Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) is the better fit for Alexa households, Amazon’s Fire TV environment, Wi‑Fi 6, and the published 8 GB/quad-core hardware platform.

Before checkout, match the model number to this comparison, confirm your television’s HDR capabilities, verify the apps available in your country, and check the live price rather than relying on an old promotion.
