The Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen, 2023) is an 8 GB streaming device running Fire OS 8. It gives a television access to compatible apps, but the device specification does not prove that paid streaming subscriptions are included. Service charges, trials and promotional bundles depend on the offer shown when you buy and on each service’s terms. Amazon lists Alexa Voice Remote Pro and Alexa Voice Remote (2024 Release) as compatible with this generation. The device can decode 4K video and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, but an app, title, HDMI chain and display must also deliver and support the format before you will see it.
Which Fire TV Stick 4K does this guide cover?
Amazon has used the Fire TV Stick 4K name for more than one generation. The specifications discussed here belong specifically to the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen), released in 2023. Amazon identifies this model as an 8 GB device with Fire OS 8 and Wi-Fi 6 support. Do not apply these figures automatically to an older or newer 4K stick: storage, operating-system version, codec limits and remote compatibility can change between generations.
Amazon’s official product wording calls it “the next generation of our most popular 4K streaming stick with Wi-Fi 6 support.” That is a vendor description, not an independent performance test. The useful buying distinction is the exact generation printed in the product listing or device-identification screen.

Do you need subscriptions to use a Fire TV Stick 4K?
A Fire TV Stick is hardware and software for accessing apps; it is not evidence that every app’s catalog is included at no extra charge. Amazon’s documentation covers compatible apps and account setup, but the materials available for this model do not establish a universal subscription bundle or a permanent free entitlement to any particular service.

What the device does provide
- A Fire OS interface through which you can install and open compatible streaming apps.
- Account setup for the device and for individual apps that require sign-in.
- Video and audio decoding capabilities described in the model specification.
What the device specification does not settle
- Whether a particular purchase includes a trial, credit or paid subscription.
- Whether a service is free, ad-supported or paid in your country.
- How long a promotion lasts, which titles it covers or whether renewal is automatic.
Offers can change by retailer, region, date and service. Before ordering, read the live marketplace listing for the exact 2nd-generation model and then check the service’s own terms. If a listing advertises a trial or bundle, record its end date and renewal price; neither is established by the hardware specification itself.
A practical subscription check
- Confirm that the listing names Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen, 2023), rather than another 4K generation.
- Look for a separately described trial or subscription offer, including its region and duration.
- Open the terms for each service you intend to use. A compatible app only means the app can run on the device; it does not grant viewing rights.
- After setup, review subscriptions in each service account so that promotional renewals are not mistaken for a permanent device benefit.
Which remotes work with the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Generation)?
Amazon’s remote-compatibility table lists two current releases for this model:
| Remote release | Compatibility with Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Generation) | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Alexa Voice Remote Pro | Listed as compatible | Buttons and equipment-control behavior depend on the remote and your setup. |
| Alexa Voice Remote (2024 Release) | Listed as compatible | Use the exact release name when matching a replacement. |
The same Amazon table includes other Fire TV remotes, but model names, generations and available capabilities differ. A remote that pairs with one Fire TV device is not automatically the right choice for every 4K stick.

- Identify the stick’s generation in the device information screen or on its original packaging.
- Read the replacement listing for the remote’s exact release, not only the family name.
- Compare the release against Amazon’s compatibility table for the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Generation).
- Check the physical controls you need. Voice access, shortcut buttons and television or receiver-control functions can vary by remote release and by the equipment connected to the stick.
If a remote is listed as compatible but a particular button does not operate your television, that is a control-setup issue rather than proof that the stick is incompatible. Recheck the remote release and the equipment-control configuration before buying another stick.

What video formats does the 2023 2nd-generation model support?
Amazon lists 4K video decoding and the following video codecs for the 2023 model. Codec support is a capability of the device; it does not promise that every app or title uses that codec or delivers 4K quality.
| Codec | Amazon-listed support | Resolution or frame-rate limit stated in the specification |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | Supported | Up to 4K at 60 frames per second |
| HEVC / H.265 | Supported | Up to 4K at 60 frames per second |
| H.264 | Supported | Codec-specific limit not stated in the cited specification |
| VP8 | Supported | Codec-specific limit not stated in the cited specification |
| VP9 | Supported | Codec-specific limit not stated in the cited specification |
| MPEG-2 | Supported | Codec-specific limit not stated in the cited specification |
| MPEG-4 | Supported | Codec-specific limit not stated in the cited specification |
The 4K/60 figures above are Amazon’s model-specific specification for AV1 and HEVC. They are not a promise that a particular service will stream at 4K, 60 fps or either codec. A service may choose another encode, limit quality by plan or account, or offer a title in a format your display chain cannot reproduce.
Which HDR and audio formats are supported?
HDR formats
Amazon identifies support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG on the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen). The specification’s product description includes Dolby Vision, while the HDR list names HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. Seeing one of these labels requires all relevant parts of the path to agree: the app and title must provide it, the stick must decode it, and the connected television and HDMI path must accept it.
If a title plays in standard dynamic range, that does not by itself indicate a faulty stick. Check the title’s format information in the app, the television’s selected input and picture mode, and whether another device in the HDMI chain is limiting the signal. The model specification establishes capability, not the format of every stream.

- Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.
Audio
The same Amazon specification lists Dolby Atmos support and HDMI audio pass-through formats. Actual output depends on the app, the program’s audio track, the television or sound system and the way those devices are connected. A compatible audio format can be passed through only when the receiving equipment supports it and the app supplies that track.
How networking affects streaming
The 2nd-generation stick supports Wi-Fi 6. Amazon also identifies an Amazon Ethernet Adapter as an option for wired networking. Wired networking is an accessory decision, not a requirement stated for normal operation.
When Wi-Fi 6 is the sensible choice
Use the built-in wireless connection when the stick is near a capable router and playback is stable. Wi-Fi 6 support describes the radio capability; it does not guarantee a particular internet speed, because performance still depends on the router, interference, distance and your service connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to consider Ethernet
An Ethernet adapter can help when wireless conditions are unreliable or when you prefer a cable to the television area. Confirm the exact adapter listing and compatibility for the 2nd-generation stick before purchasing; the available documentation identifies the adapter option but does not establish that every Ethernet accessory will work.

Why a 4K or HDR stream may not appear as expected
The device is a different generation
Check the model name first. “Fire TV Stick 4K” without “2nd Gen (2023)” is not enough to establish that the 8 GB, Fire OS 8 specifications above apply.
The title or app is not delivering the format
Open the title’s details in the app and check its advertised resolution and HDR badges. App catalogs and encodes vary; hardware decoding cannot upgrade a title that is supplied at a lower resolution or without HDR.
The display path does not accept the signal
Verify the television’s input and picture information while the title is playing. If a receiver, switch or other HDMI device sits between the stick and display, test the stick directly with the television to isolate the path. The specification confirms decoding support, but it does not guarantee that every connected component passes every format.
The network is unstable
Try the wireless connection in the same location with other devices, or test the supported Ethernet-adapter option if wireless conditions are the likely cause. A network problem can reduce stream quality even when the stick and title support 4K.
What to compare before buying a Fire TV Stick 4K
Use the following checklist when comparing generations, bundles or accessories:
- Generation and year: verify the exact release; the figures in this article are for the 2023 2nd generation.
- Storage and operating system: this model is listed with 8 GB and Fire OS 8.
- Remote release: match the exact remote name and check desired shortcut or equipment-control functions.
- Video and HDR: confirm the codecs, 4K/60 limits for AV1 and HEVC, and the HDR formats your television can use.
- Audio: check Dolby Atmos and HDMI pass-through compatibility with your sound system.
- Network: decide whether Wi-Fi 6 is sufficient or whether the documented Ethernet-adapter option fits your installation.
- Services and price: read the current listing and each service’s terms. Current prices, promotions and subscription bundles were not established by the device specification and can change.
Bottom line for prospective buyers
The Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen, 2023) is an 8 GB Fire OS 8 device with Wi-Fi 6, 4K decoding, broad codec support and HDR options that include Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. Amazon lists Alexa Voice Remote Pro and Alexa Voice Remote (2024 Release) as compatible. Treat subscriptions as separate service decisions, verify the exact generation and remote release, and judge 4K or HDR results by the complete app-to-display chain rather than by the specification alone.
