I cut my monthly television bill to $0 by canceling paid television service and relying on free programming available through Fire TV. That result depended on what I watched and which services I kept: Fire TV’s Live TV tools organize supported sources, but they do not make subscription apps free. You can also use an antenna for over-the-air broadcasts if you have a compatible Fire TV Smart TV, though the antenna may add an upfront cost.
What “$0” means in this Fire TV setup
The $0 figure refers to my recurring television-service bill after canceling the paid package. It does not mean every program on Fire TV is free, nor does it count a one-time cost for an antenna or other hardware. Your own monthly total depends on whether you keep paid streaming subscriptions and whether free programming covers what you actually watch.
Fire TV’s Live TV interface helps you find supported live programming, including what is airing now. Some live-TV apps require a paid subscription, as Amazon’s Fire TV help page explains. The interface is a way to browse sources, not a way to bypass their payment requirements.

What Fire TV’s built-in live tools do
Browse supported live sources
From the Fire TV home screen, use the Live TV area and On Now row to discover current programming from supported apps and sources. Availability and labels can vary by device and market, and the lineup is not guaranteed to be identical everywhere.

Open the channel guide
While watching a channel, press Left or Guide on the remote to open the channel guide. Use the Menu button to manage or favorite channels. These controls help organize available sources; they do not grant access to channels you have not subscribed to.
Use Fire TV Channels for free ad-supported programming
Amazon describes Fire TV Channels as a preloaded app with free content. Its marketing page says the service offers more than 900 short-form playlists and feeds; that is Amazon’s undated description, not a count of conventional linear channels. How to scan for antenna channels
Channel scanning applies to a compatible Fire TV Smart TV connected to an antenna or another supported live-TV source. It should not be assumed to work on every Fire TV Stick or streaming device.
- Connect the antenna to the television’s antenna input. Check that your specific Fire TV Smart TV has the required input and tuner.
- On the TV, open Settings > Live TV > Channel Scan.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to scan for available channels.
- Once a channel is playing, press Left or Guide to browse the guide; use Menu to manage or favorite channels.
Reception depends on your location, broadcast coverage, antenna placement, and equipment. An antenna can receive available over-the-air broadcasts; it does not unlock Fire TV Channels or subscription streams. Amazon’s Fire TV live-TV instructions cover scanning and guide controls.

Check the TV’s setup mode and capabilities
Fire TV Smart TVs can offer different setup experiences. Amazon says the Basic experience supports live TV and select popular content, while the Full experience provides broader app access and features. The Basic experience is not available on Amazon-manufactured Fire TV Smart TVs. These setup choices do not establish that a channel lineup is free or that a particular television has an antenna tuner. - List the monthly cost of your current television package and any streaming subscriptions you would keep.
- Identify the programs you regularly watch and check whether they are available through Fire TV Channels, another free supported source, or local over-the-air reception.
- Cancel only the paid services you no longer need. A paid app remains paid even when its live content appears in Fire TV’s guide.
- If you want antenna reception, confirm your television is compatible and account for the antenna’s one-time purchase cost.
- Calculate the new recurring total from the subscriptions and services you retain. Keep one-time hardware spending separate from that monthly figure.
The setup only works as a $0 monthly option if the free sources meet your viewing needs and you cancel all recurring television services included in your calculation. It may still involve an upfront hardware expense.
