Recruitment in Fire Emblem: Three Houses is controlled by route, chapter, Byleth’s underlying stats and skill ranks, support levels, and a handful of permanent missables. Your chosen house’s students join automatically. Other students become scoutable during monastery exploration from Chapter 2, usually after Byleth meets one skill and one stat requirement. Building support lowers those requirements, while an available B support can sometimes produce an automatic weekday recruitment request. Faculty members use different chapter and Byleth-level gates, and several characters leave or become unavailable because of route decisions or the timeskip.
This guide separates ordinary student recruitment from faculty gates, route locks, post-timeskip re-recruitment, and Expansion Pass content so you can plan a roster without relying on guesswork.
How recruitment works
Your house joins automatically
At the start of a route, the students assigned to that house are already yours. You do not need to spend activity points, meet stat checks, or ask them to join. Scouting concerns students from the other two houses and certain staff or DLC characters.

Free exploration in the monastery begins in Chapter 2. Speak to students from other houses during exploration and choose the option to recruit or scout them. The game then checks Byleth’s relevant skill and stat. A failed or declined offer is not permanent: Serenes Forest reports that the option becomes available again on the following weekend.

The two-part student check
Each ordinary student asks for one Byleth skill rank and one Byleth stat. Triangle Attack’s reference data shows common skill thresholds of D, C, B, or B+ and common stat targets of 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30. The exact pair differs by character. The check uses Byleth’s underlying stat, not a temporary increase supplied by a class, ability, or similar effect.
Student requirements and examples
The following examples are the no-support requirements documented by Triangle Attack. They illustrate the system; they are not a complete roster table.

Do not assume that every student uses the same stat as the examples above. Check the student’s displayed request and plan Byleth’s training around that pair. A stat bonus granted only by a class or ability does not satisfy the requirement, so inspect Byleth’s normal character sheet before attempting recruitment.
How support changes recruitment
Support lowers the burden
Support with the student reduces the skill and stat requirements. Triangle Attack describes a 20 percent reduction to the stat target for each support tier and stepwise reductions to the required skill rank. The practical result is that a student who is difficult to recruit at no support may become attainable after several support conversations.
At A support, the student can be recruited regardless of the normal skill or stat check. Reaching A support is therefore a reliable long-term solution, although it requires substantial activity before the relevant conversation is available.

B support can trigger an automatic request
Serenes Forest reports that a student with B or higher support can independently offer to join during a free weekday. This request ignores the normal stat and skill requirements. The chance is inconsistent, so B support is an opportunity rather than a guarantee. If the request does not appear, continue raising support and check later weekdays.
Caspar and Ferdinand are exceptions before Part 2: their B supports are not available in a normal first run, so this automatic route cannot solve their early recruitment.

Why the displayed letter can lag
Support points are not always reflected immediately by the visible letter rank. If a character appears close to the next rank, continue using support-building activities instead of assuming the current letter is final. Meals, gifts, lost items, choir practice, mission assistance, and favorable advice answers all help build support.
Step-by-step: recruiting another house’s student
- Start in Chapter 2 or later. Use a monastery exploration day and locate the student you want.
- Read the request carefully. Note the named Byleth skill and stat. Do not substitute a class- or ability-based stat bonus for the underlying value.
- Choose a route to the requirement. Raise the skill through instruction and battle use, and raise the stat through lessons, activities, gifts, or other permanent growth opportunities.
- Build support in parallel. Invite the student to meals, give appropriate gifts, return lost items, use choir practice when available, deploy the student for mission assistance, and select helpful advice responses.
- Check on a free day. If the student has B support, watch for an unsolicited weekday offer. Because the chance is random, keep checking rather than abandoning the plan after one missed offer.
- Accept the invitation when it appears. A successful recruitment immediately places the student in your roster. If you fail or decline a normal offer, wait until the following weekend to try again.
- Record route and timing risks. Before the end of Part I, verify that the character is not affected by a route lock, a forced departure, or the Part I-only recruitment window described below.
Faculty and staff: chapter and level gates
Faculty recruitment is not based on the student-style skill/stat pair. These characters use a minimum chapter and Byleth level, and support can lower the level threshold without removing the chapter gate.

These level figures are the published examples from Triangle Attack. If a staff member refuses to join, confirm both the calendar chapter and Byleth’s actual level, then check whether your route makes that character unavailable.

Route locks and forced departures (spoilers)
Characters tied to a house
Some characters cannot be recruited away from their starting house:

- Dimitri and Dedue are exclusive to the Blue Lions.
- Claude is exclusive to the Golden Deer.
These are route identities, not ordinary recruitment checks. Raising support or Byleth’s stats cannot override them.
Hilda’s exception
Hilda is a special case. Triangle Attack notes that she can join the Black Eagles only on the Silver Snow route, in Chapter 12. Support-building for that recruitment is restricted until then, so you cannot use the usual early-support plan to bring her into every Black Eagles playthrough.
Flayn and the Crimson Flower split
Flayn joins automatically in Chapter 7. If you choose Crimson Flower in Chapter 11, she leaves. Plan around that departure rather than investing in her as a permanent member for that route.
Catherine, Cyril, and Shamir on Silver Snow
Catherine and Cyril cannot be recruited into Black Eagles except on Silver Snow, where they join automatically in Chapter 12. Shamir also joins Silver Snow automatically in Chapter 12. Their general chapter-and-level gates therefore do not tell the whole story for a Black Eagles run: the route decision is decisive.

Timeskip recruitment and characters you can miss
Why pre-timeskip recruitment matters
Part I is the safest period to recruit. After the timeskip, a character may be absent, hostile, or require a battlefield recruitment instead of a monastery conversation. Treat the end of Part I as a deadline for any character whose route status you have not verified.
Ashe’s documented re-recruitment condition
Serenes Forest specifies that Ashe leaves at Part 2 unless Edelgard or Dimitri is present. He can then be recruited again by defeating him in Chapter 15. This is not the same as ordinary scouting: you must encounter him as an enemy and win the battle without losing the opportunity to recruit him.
Other post-timeskip enemy encounters
RPG Site identifies Ashe and Lorenz as examples of characters recruited before the timeskip who may need to be defeated in a post-timeskip enemy army before rejoining. The exact condition is route-dependent, so check the chapter objective and the character’s status before delivering a finishing blow. Do not assume that every former recruit automatically returns to the monastery.

Ashen Wolves unlock order
Triangle Attack lists the following Abyss unlock points after completing chapters of the Cindered Shadows side story:

Nintendo’s official support documentation states that the Ashen Wolves “can only be recruited during Part I.” Finish their recruitment before the timeskip; completing the side story alone does not create an unlimited recruitment window.

Anna
With the Expansion Pass, Anna becomes recruitable in the monastery after Chapter 3. She has no Support relationships, so support reductions and automatic B-support requests do not apply to her. Recruiting her also unlocks a later paralogue.
Planning a complete roster
No single route gives unrestricted access to every named character. Build your plan around six questions before spending limited activity time:
- Is the character route-locked? If so, no amount of support or training will move them to another route.
- What is the earliest legal chapter? Student scouting begins in Chapter 2, but faculty and DLC characters have their own gates.
- Does the character require Part I? Ashen Wolves recruitment is explicitly Part I-only, and route splits can remove characters at the end of Part I.
- What is the Byleth burden? Compare the requested skill rank and underlying stat with your current build. A high stat target may make support investment more efficient than immediate training.
- Can support solve the check? Student support reduces requirements, B support may produce a random automatic offer, and A support removes the normal check. Characters without support relationships, such as Anna, cannot use this plan.
- Will the character need re-recruitment? Confirm whether a timeskip enemy encounter is expected and whether your route satisfies the documented condition.
Efficient activity order
At the beginning of Part I, choose one or two priority recruits rather than scattering meals and gifts across the entire cast. Raise the relevant Byleth skill during instruction, then use shared activities to build support with the same targets. This approach gives you a clear fallback: if the stat or skill reaches the normal threshold, recruit directly; if not, continue toward a support-based reduction or B-support request.
Route-specific save planning
Keep a save before the route-defining decision if you are testing a roster plan. This is especially useful for Black Eagles, where Silver Snow and Crimson Flower produce different recruitment outcomes, and for any run that depends on retaining Flayn or obtaining the Silver Snow staff joins.
Troubleshooting failed recruitment
“My stat is high enough, but the student still refuses.”
- Confirm that the correct skill is ranked high enough; the game checks both conditions.
- Check Byleth’s base stat rather than a temporary class or ability bonus.
- Verify that the student is not route-locked or outside the legal chapter window.
- Raise support and attempt the conversation again after the next weekend if the offer was declined.
“The B-support request never appears.”
The request is chance-based, not guaranteed. Continue support activities and check free weekdays. Also confirm that the character’s B support is actually available in your current phase; Caspar and Ferdinand cannot use this pre-Part-2 shortcut in a normal first run.
“The support letter has not changed.”
Invisible support points can be ahead of the displayed letter. Continue meals, gifts, lost-item returns, choir practice, mission assistance, and advice answers until the next conversation unlocks.
“A staff member is available in the monastery but will not join.”
Check the chapter and Byleth level separately. Support can lower the level threshold, but it cannot bypass the minimum chapter. Then verify route restrictions, especially the Black Eagles cases involving Catherine, Cyril, Hilda, and Flayn.

- Before the route split, verify Flayn’s status and the Silver Snow-only staff outcomes.
- For post-timeskip targets, identify the chapter and battle condition before attacking the enemy unit.
