Buy the $69.99 base game first if you are new to Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, unsure whether you will want extra content, or primarily want to play the core campaign. The $34.99 Expansion Pass is optional downloadable content; it cannot be played without the base game. If you already own the game and know you want every announced add-on, the pass is the appropriate purchase. The $104.99 game-plus-pass bundle is convenient, but at Nintendo’s listed US prices it costs essentially the same as buying both products separately.

Quick answer: which purchase fits you?

Situation Best choice Why
You have not bought the game Base game — $69.99 It is the required foundation and contains the launch campaign. You can decide about optional content after playing.
You own the base game Expansion Pass — $34.99 It unlocks all three announced waves as they release.
You are certain before starting that you want every announced wave Game-plus-pass bundle — $104.99 It is a convenient single purchase, but not a meaningful discount at the listed US prices.
You want a physical copy Physical base game, then digital pass if desired Nintendo lists a physical edition of the game. The pass is digital DLC and still requires the game.

What the base game contains

Nintendo lists Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave as a Nintendo Switch 2 game developed by Intelligent Systems. The physical edition and digital game are scheduled for release on September 17, 2026. The base purchase is the complete starting point for the adventure: it is the product that supplies the game itself, its launch content, and access to any compatible downloadable content.

The official premise follows four heroes whose journeys are interwoven across past and present. You travel through time to gather allies, test your tactical decisions in battle, and confront the demon god Balor. Nintendo describes the objective as saving the future from ruin—or failing while trying. The Expansion Pass does not replace this campaign, add a separate way to start the game, or turn into a standalone edition.

For a first-time buyer, that distinction matters more than the headline price. The base game is the only purchase needed to begin the campaign and evaluate whether its time-travel structure, tactical battles, characters, and pacing suit you. The pass adds material around that foundation rather than supplying an alternative core game.

  • As its professor, you must lead your students in class and in tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome.

What the Expansion Pass adds

Nintendo’s pass grants access to three waves of downloadable content as they release. The waves are not separate products: individual waves cannot be purchased on their own. Buying the pass therefore means committing to the complete announced set, including content that was not yet available when the pass went on sale.

Wave 1: prototype weapons

Wave 1 supplies prototype weapons for the four heroes. Nintendo says the designs are modeled after Heroes’ Relics from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Nintendo Support lists the US release date as October 14, 2026. Because this wave is weapon-focused, its immediate appeal is to players who want additional equipment and the associated visual and thematic connection to another entry in the series.

The pass is required to obtain Wave 1 through the Expansion Pass. A base-game owner who wants this content should purchase the pass rather than look for a standalone Wave 1 listing, since Nintendo does not sell the waves individually.

Wave 2: three gods and new outfits

Wave 2 adds the gods Aurora, Smyrnos, and Jurah, together with new wearable outfits. Nintendo places this release in the holiday/winter 2026 period. That is a release window, not a specific day, so a buyer should not assume an exact date until Nintendo announces one.

Rank #2
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes - Switch
  • Command Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters like Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude in epic real-time battles
  • Play through three distinct storylines set in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses universe, each with a different ending, from the point of view of a new protagonist, Shez.
  • Combine the action-packed Warriors-style gameplay with the strategy and style of the Fire Emblem series
  • Fight through hordes of enemies with Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters and their distinct abilities
  • Use Fire Emblem series mechanics like the weapons triangle, character classes, crests, and battalions to tailor your strategy

The combination of new named figures and cosmetic equipment makes Wave 2 different from Wave 1. It is aimed at players who want the expanding setting and additional ways to dress the cast, not only stronger or different weapons. The announced window also means that a pass bought before Wave 2 launches includes a future entitlement rather than content available immediately.

Wave 3: stories, recruits, and classes

Wave 3 is scheduled for 2027 and introduces new stories featuring Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel, and Anatolia. It also adds new recruitable allies and classes. Of the three waves, this is the broadest announced expansion to the narrative and tactical roster: it adds story material, characters who can join the party, and class options that can affect how you build a team.

Nintendo has announced the year but not an exact launch date in the information available here. Treat 2027 as a planning window rather than a guaranteed day or month. The pass remains the way to obtain this wave, and there is no separate purchase route for only its stories, recruits, or classes.

Base game versus pass: the practical differences

Comparison point Base game Expansion Pass
What it is The Nintendo Switch 2 game and its launch campaign Optional downloadable content covering three announced waves
Can it be used by itself? Yes; it is the required game No; the base game is required
Availability At the game’s launch on September 17, 2026 Staggered: Wave 1 on October 14, 2026 in the US; Wave 2 in holiday/winter 2026; Wave 3 in 2027
Format listed by Nintendo Physical edition and digital game Digital DLC for Nintendo Switch 2
US regular price $69.99 $34.99
Content scope Four-hero, time-travel campaign centered on Balor Prototype weapons, additional gods and outfits, then new stories, allies, and classes

Price math: is the bundle cheaper?

Nintendo’s listed US regular prices are $69.99 for the base game and $34.99 for the Expansion Pass. Bought separately, those prices total $104.98 before tax. The game-plus-pass bundle is listed at $104.99 before tax. That one-cent difference means the bundle is effectively the same price as purchasing both products separately; it is a convenience option, not a material saving.

These are US regular prices cited by Nintendo in 2026. eShop prices, taxes, currency conversion, and availability can vary by region and can change. Do not use the arithmetic above to assume that another country’s bundle will match the US relationship.

When each wave becomes available

The pass uses a staggered-release model. You receive the entitlement to each wave through the pass, but later content is not necessarily downloadable on the day you buy it. The currently announced timing is:

  • Base game: September 17, 2026.
  • Wave 1: October 14, 2026 in the United States, according to Nintendo Support.
  • Wave 2: holiday/winter 2026; Nintendo has not provided an exact date in the cited information.
  • Wave 3: 2027; Nintendo has not provided an exact date in the cited information.

Regional calendars can differ. A Nintendo Malaysia news page describes Wave 1’s regional launch as October 15, 2026, one day after the US date. If your Nintendo Account is registered outside the US, check the local eShop or Nintendo support information instead of assuming the US date applies to your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This timing affects the value calculation. Buying the pass at launch does not give you all of its announced material immediately: Wave 1 is available first, while Wave 2 and Wave 3 arrive later. Someone who prefers to play everything at once may reasonably wait until more waves are released, provided Nintendo continues to offer the pass on the same terms.

Physical and digital buying choices

Physical-game buyers

Nintendo lists a physical edition of the base game. Choose it if you collect cartridges, want a boxed copy, or prefer to keep the core game separate from your account’s digital purchases. The Expansion Pass remains a digital add-on, so owning a cartridge does not remove the need to buy or download the pass if you want its content.

Digital buyers

A digital base-game purchase and the digital pass keep everything associated with the same Nintendo Account and console ecosystem. The pass is still an add-on rather than a separate game. Before paying, confirm that the product listing corresponds to Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave on Nintendo Switch 2 and that your account’s region matches the price and release information you are using.

Bundle buyers

The bundle is useful when you have neither product and have already decided to receive all three waves. It avoids making two separate transactions, but its listed US price is not lower than the separate total. If you might stop after the core campaign, the bundle commits you to content you may never use; the base game leaves that decision open.

Which edition fits common buyer situations?

You are new to the game or to the series

Start with the base game. It supplies the complete entry point, lets you experience the four heroes’ interwoven journeys, and avoids paying for future DLC before you know whether the campaign is for you. There is no requirement to own the pass to begin or finish the base purchase.

Best Value
Fire Emblem™: Fortune's Weave - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Enter the Dagdan Empire—a prosperous land ruled by the gods—and compete in the Heroic Games for the chance to be granted one wish
  • Play as four heroes competing in the Heroic Games whose fortunes are tied to the fate of the world
  • Prepare for each match of the Heroic Games by exploring Dagda and its capital city of Dagsion
  • Learn skills at the training grounds, recruit allies and build bonds of friendship, and explore beyond Dagsion’s walls to gain experience
  • Use everything you have at your disposal, including your heroes’ special abilities, to turn the tide of battle

You already own the base game

Buy the Expansion Pass if you want the full announced post-launch package: Wave 1’s prototype weapons, Wave 2’s gods and outfits, and Wave 3’s stories, recruits, and classes. Because waves cannot be purchased separately, the pass is the relevant choice even if only one wave currently interests you.

You know before starting that you want every announced wave

Choose the bundle if a single transaction is simpler. Choose the base game and pass separately if you prefer to keep purchases distinct; at Nintendo’s listed US prices, you do not give up a meaningful discount by splitting them.

You are undecided about downloadable content

Buy only the base game. The pass is optional and later content is scheduled across 2026 and 2027. Waiting lets you judge the core campaign and see more information about the waves before committing $34.99, subject to future regional pricing or availability changes.

You mainly want Wave 1

Remember that Nintendo does not sell individual waves. The practical choice is between buying the $34.99 pass for all three waves or skipping the DLC. There is no lower-priced Wave 1-only purchase identified here.

How to avoid the most common purchase mistakes

  • Buying the pass without the game: The pass cannot replace the base game. Confirm that you own or are buying the game itself.
  • Expecting every wave immediately: Only Wave 1 has the announced October 2026 US date. Wave 2 and Wave 3 are future releases.
  • Looking for separate wave listings: Nintendo says the three waves cannot be purchased individually.
  • Assuming the bundle saves money: In the US list prices supplied by Nintendo, $104.99 is effectively the same as $69.99 plus $34.99.
  • Assuming dates are global: The US Wave 1 date is October 14, 2026, while Nintendo Malaysia describes October 15 for its region.
  • Confusing physical ownership with DLC ownership: A physical cartridge provides the game; it does not include the digital Expansion Pass unless the specific product listing says so.
  • Using a stale price: The figures above are Nintendo’s 2026 US regular prices, not a guarantee of future discounts, taxes, or another region’s currency.

A simple decision checklist

  1. Do you already own the base game? If yes, skip directly to the Expansion Pass decision. If no, continue.
  2. Do you want to play the core campaign before deciding about add-ons? Buy the base game only.
  3. Are you certain you want all three announced waves, including content scheduled for 2027? Consider the bundle or buy the pass alongside the game.
  4. Do you require a physical copy? Select the physical base-game edition, then add the digital pass only if wanted.
  5. Are you targeting only one wave? There is no individual-wave purchase; decide whether the complete pass is worthwhile.
  6. Is your account outside the United States? Verify your local price, tax, release date, and eShop availability before checkout.

What is known—and what is not—about the pass

The announced content gives a clear outline of the pass, but it does not establish a review score, campaign-length increase, player-count effect, or other numerical measure of value. Wave 3’s stories, recruitable allies, and classes are confirmed in broad terms, while exact release timing has not been provided beyond 2027. Wave 2 has a holiday/winter 2026 window rather than a day-specific schedule.

That uncertainty is another reason the base-game-first approach suits undecided buyers. You can make the DLC decision using your own response to the core campaign instead of paying in advance for content whose final timing and detailed scope are still to be announced.

Final recommendation

For most new buyers, purchase the $69.99 base game. It is the required product, contains the launch adventure, and lets you decide later whether prototype weapons, additional gods and outfits, and the 2027 story and class content justify the pass. Existing owners who want every announced addition should purchase the $34.99 Expansion Pass. The $104.99 bundle is sensible only when you already know you want both; at the listed US prices, its convenience—not savings—is the reason to choose it.
