If your fingerprint reader stops recognizing you, use your PIN, password, or device passcode first so you can keep using the device. Then check the sensor and finger, retry with careful placement, review enrollment and settings, and only then investigate drivers or hardware. A failed scan alone does not prove the reader is broken.

Start with the safest checks

1. Sign in another way

On a Windows PC, choose your PIN or password at the sign-in screen. On a phone or tablet, use its passcode or backup PIN, pattern, or password. Some devices also require a passcode after a restart or other security conditions even when the fingerprint sensor is working; that prompt by itself is not evidence of a fault.

2. Clean the sensor and your finger

Turn to the instructions for your device rather than applying one cleaning method to every reader. Microsoft advises keeping a Windows Hello reader clean and dry. For Surface, use a lint-free cloth and avoid glass cleaner and other cleaning chemicals. Apple recommends wiping the Touch ID sensor with a clean, lint-free cloth and keeping both sensor and finger clean and dry. Google’s Pixel guidance permits alcohol wipes for its power-button sensor. See the relevant guidance for Windows Hello, Surface, Touch ID, or Pixel.

3. Try a deliberate scan

Use the finger you enrolled and place it steadily. Surface guidance says to place the finger flat in the middle of the power-button reader, use light pressure, and avoid moving it during recognition. Apple says to cover the Touch ID sensor completely, including its surrounding metal ring, without moving your finger. LG likewise recommends placing the finger in the middle and level with its laptop sensor. Do not press harder or swipe unless the device’s instructions call for it.

Check what kind of failure you have

The next useful step depends on whether the reader detects the finger but rejects it, refuses enrollment, or is missing from the system altogether. A case or screen protector may block a sensor; a setting may be disabled; or Windows may have a driver issue. Identify the symptom before considering a reset or repair.

  • Recognition failure: The device sees a scan but reports that the fingerprint could not be recognized. Recheck cleanliness, placement, and the enrolled finger.
  • Enrollment or setup failure: You cannot add a fingerprint or complete setup. Check that the feature is enabled and that the sensor area is unobstructed.
  • Detection failure: The reader is absent from its expected settings or Windows Device Manager. Check the model-specific driver and detection guidance before assuming the sensor has failed.

Review settings, enrollment, and obstructions

Windows Hello

Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello). Confirm fingerprint sign-in is available, then add another fingerprint or remove and set up the fingerprint again. When enrolling, capture the finger from different angles. Microsoft’s Windows Hello troubleshooting guidance recommends these steps and checking for driver updates.

  • Important Notes — Please Read Before Purchase - Support for Win10/11 32/64 bit original system. Not fit for the streamlined version. The Lite version has trimmed the biometric component, the fingerprint login device will not be able to recognize the Hello fingerprint option. It merely supports Windows Hello, does not fit for encrypting USB drives/files, and can merely support Windows system. It is recommended to prioritize plugging into the USB 2.0 interface of the motherboard. USB 3.0 docking stations are prone to power supply/interference and unstable recognition.

Surface devices

Some Surface models read fingerprints through a Fingerprint Power Button; others use a reader on a Surface Pro Keyboard. On a detachable keyboard, detach and reattach it. An illuminated LED around a Surface Fingerprint Power Button indicates it is ready to act as a reader. Follow the Surface-specific troubleshooting steps for your model.

Apple Touch ID

Check that Touch ID is enabled for the function you want and that at least one fingerprint is enrolled. A case or screen protector must not cover the sensor or its surrounding ring. Depending on the model, the sensor is in the Home button or the top button; Apple identifies the top-button sensor on iPad mini (6th generation) and iPad Air (4th and 5th generation). Follow Apple’s Touch ID troubleshooting instructions if setup will not complete or the setting is unavailable.

Apple also requires a passcode in some security situations: after a restart, after five consecutive unrecognized fingerprints, after more than 48 hours without unlocking, and in other cases listed on its support page. These are security behaviors, not by themselves signs of sensor damage.

Google Pixel phones

Remove a case temporarily if it interferes with the sensor, then consider enrolling the finger again. Google recommends capturing the pad, edges, and tips of the finger; Pixel devices allow up to five fingerprints. On Pixel Fold, if the side sensor seems unresponsive, check the Touch to unlock anytime setting because behavior depends on whether it is enabled. See Google Pixel’s fingerprint sensor troubleshooting.

Check Windows detection, drivers, and updates

If the reader is missing rather than merely rejecting a scan, check whether Windows detects it. Dell advises looking under Biometric devices in Device Manager, or under Unknown devices if it is not listed as expected. Use the driver and diagnostic resources for the exact computer model; a generic driver or an unrelated model’s instructions may not apply.

Kindly see the product description below for the troubleshooting instruction with installing the driver for this device.

For Surface, check driver and firmware health in the Surface app and install available updates through Windows Update. For other Windows PCs, check the manufacturer’s official driver updates. If the problem began after an update, that timing is useful when narrowing down the issue, but it does not establish that the update caused hardware damage.

When to run diagnostics or seek repair

Use the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostic if software checks do not restore the reader or it remains undetected. Dell recommends a fingerprint hardware test; if it fails, Dell says to contact Technical Support for repair options available in your region. Apple advises seeking service if Touch ID setup cannot be completed or the setting remains dimmed or greyed out after its troubleshooting steps.

Do not jump straight to a Windows reset or reinstall. Dell treats restoring or reinstalling Windows as a last resort and warns that reinstalling can permanently delete user data. Back up important files before any recovery operation, and follow instructions for the exact device.

Repair parts, procedures, and costs depend on the device model, region, and diagnostic result, so a replacement reader cannot be chosen safely from the symptom alone. Consult the manufacturer or an appropriate repair provider once model-specific troubleshooting or a hardware test points to service.
