A University of Basel-led laboratory study found that the oxidative potential of particles from a small aircraft jet engine rose significantly after simulated atmospheric aging lasting up to 12 days. The result suggests that freshly measured aircraft emissions can understate the toxicity-related properties of the particles people may encounter later, but the experiment did not expose people or prove that the particles cause disease.
What the study found
The study compared particulate emissions from a small aircraft turbine with emissions from a marine diesel engine. Researchers examined both fresh exhaust and samples that had undergone simulated atmospheric processing for periods between one and 12 days.
Aircraft particles became significantly more oxidative as they aged in the experiment. Marine-diesel particles, tested under the same general aging period, remained largely stable. The reported explanation is that sunlight and reactive components of air changed the aircraft particles’ chemical composition after emission.

How the researchers tested exhaust aging
- Collect emissions: The team sampled particulate matter from a small aircraft jet engine and a marine diesel engine.
- Simulate the atmosphere: Fresh samples were placed in a photochemical reactor, where light-driven atmospheric chemistry was reproduced over simulated ages of one to 12 days.
- Measure oxidative potential: Fresh and aged particles were analyzed with the Online Oxidative Potential Ascorbic Acid Instrument (OOPAAI), which measures how strongly particles can consume ascorbic acid in oxidation reactions.
- Compare sources and ages: Results were evaluated across two dimensions: aircraft versus marine-diesel emissions, and fresh versus atmospherically aged particles.
This design tests how particle chemistry changes after release. It is not a controlled exposure study in humans or animals.
What “more harmful” means here
Fine combustion particles can be nanometer-scale, allowing them to penetrate deeply into the respiratory tract. Oxidative potential describes a particle sample’s ability to drive chemical oxidation. Higher oxidative potential is used as a mechanistic indicator because oxidation can contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation, processes associated with respiratory and cardiovascular disease.

That indicator is not a diagnosis, a count of illnesses, or a direct estimate of deaths. A rise in oxidative potential means the aged sample showed greater activity in the laboratory assay; it does not establish how much additional risk a person faces at a particular distance from an airport or flight path.

The contrast matters because particle mass alone would not show whether two sources produce particles with different chemical reactivity. The study indicates that source and atmospheric age can affect toxicity-related properties independently of how much particulate mass is present.

What the experiment does—and does not—prove
Established by the experiment
- Aircraft-exhaust particles changed chemically during the simulated atmospheric aging period.
- Their measured oxidative potential increased significantly in the laboratory.
- Marine-diesel particles did not show a comparable increase under the same broad testing window.
- Sunlight and reactive atmospheric constituents are the proposed drivers of the change.
Not established by the experiment
- It did not expose volunteers, airport workers, passengers, or downwind communities.
- It did not establish a human dose-response relationship.
- It did not prove that a specific disease will develop in people exposed to aged aircraft particles.
- It did not quantify aircraft-attributable deaths or determine how much of a community’s pollution comes from aviation.
Those limits are important when translating a chemical assay into public-health language. The result supports concern about particle transformation, not a precise personal-risk calculation.
Why the one-to-12-day window matters
Exhaust is often characterized close to an engine, when particles are still fresh. The reactor results show that aircraft particles can continue changing after that point, potentially for days under the study’s simulated conditions. A monitoring program that reports only fresh-emission mass or concentration could therefore miss changes in chemical reactivity that occur farther downwind.

The experiment does not mean every aircraft plume follows the same 12-day trajectory. Real atmospheric aging depends on sunlight, humidity, oxidants, temperature, dilution, plume height, weather and the original fuel-and-engine mixture. The tested interval is a controlled simulation, not a universal atmospheric lifetime.
Implications for air-quality rules and monitoring
Study leader Markus Kalberer said the findings indicate that legal frameworks such as the Swiss Ordinance on Air Pollution Control may not adequately account for differences in toxicity between particle sources. Current rules commonly emphasize particle mass or concentration. The study argues for considering source-specific composition and oxidative properties as additional information.

That does not by itself change a legal limit. Turning oxidative-potential measurements into enforceable standards would require agreement on validated methods, exposure relationships, monitoring practices and thresholds. The work instead identifies a gap for regulators and researchers: particles from different combustion sources may not be equally hazardous even when their measured mass is similar.
How to interpret the health context
The World Health Organization attributes more than 7 million premature deaths annually to air pollution; the year of that figure is not stated in the study coverage. That global statistic provides background on the importance of air pollution, but it is not a result of the aircraft-particle experiment and cannot be used to calculate an aviation-specific death toll.
For readers, the most defensible conclusion is narrow: aircraft exhaust particles in this laboratory study became more oxidatively active during simulated aging, whereas marine-diesel particles were comparatively stable. The finding strengthens the case for measuring what particles do chemically after emission, while leaving the size of any real-world health effect to future exposure and epidemiological studies.
