Open the Files app and select Recent to find a file you just downloaded, created, or used. For the main download directory, choose Downloads in the left navigation. If you still cannot see the item, use the Files search bar, apply a filter, and verify possible matches with Get info.
Start with Recent, then check Downloads
Recent is the fastest place to look when the download happened recently. It includes files that were downloaded, created, or opened lately, so the newest item may appear even when you do not remember its exact folder.
When you need the standard download location rather than a time-based list, open Downloads from the Files app’s left navigation. This is the folder to check when a browser or another application saved the file normally.

- Select Recent for a newly downloaded or recently used file.
- Select Downloads in the left navigation to inspect the download folder.
- Open a file by double-clicking it, or right-click it and choose Open.
Search when the name or location is uncertain
Use the search field in the top-right of Files when Recent and Downloads do not identify the item. Enter the filename, part of the name, or another identifying term. Apply a filter to narrow the results when many files match.

Search is especially useful when a file was saved into a folder other than Downloads, when its name was changed, or when you remember only its type or another detail. After locating a likely result, use Get info from the right-click menu to check its file size and type before trying to open it.
Choose the view and sort order that reveal the file
List view
List view exposes the filename, size, type, and modified date. Sort by name, type, size, or modified date. Sorting by modified date is useful for a recent download; sorting by type can group images, documents, or archives together.

Grid view
Grid view displays larger thumbnails. Use it when you are looking for an image or video and can recognize its appearance more easily than its filename.

Confirm a file before troubleshooting it
If a result will not open, right-click it and choose Get info. Check the reported type and size first. A missing compatible application can look like a damaged download, and an unexpectedly small or empty file may explain why an application cannot use it.

When Googlebook OS does not have an application that supports the file type, use the file’s open dialog and choose Search Play Store to look for a compatible application. Do not assume corruption until the type and size have been checked.
Handle ZIP downloads
For a ZIP archive, double-click it or right-click it and choose Extract. Googlebook OS creates a new folder using the ZIP file’s name, giving you normal files that can be edited or opened individually.

Choose Browse when you only need to inspect the archive. Files viewed this way are read-only. Extract the archive when you need to edit, move, or otherwise use the contained files.
Find files on a connected phone
Connect the phone and look in Files for a folder named for that device. Opening an item from the phone folder automatically downloads it to Googlebook OS. To save a copy deliberately, drag the item to a Googlebook folder or use copy and paste.

Be careful when deleting from the phone folder: the item is sent to the phone’s trash, not Googlebook’s trash. That distinction matters if you are trying to remove only the local copy or recover a deleted item.

A practical decision path
- Try Recent if the download was just made.
- Check Downloads if you expect the standard folder.
- Search by filename or an identifying term and apply a filter.
- Switch to list view and sort by modified date, type, size, or name.
- Switch to grid view when a thumbnail will identify an image or video faster.
- Use Get info to verify the type and size.
- For a ZIP, choose Browse for read-only inspection or Extract for usable files.
- For phone content, open the device-named folder and copy items to a Googlebook folder when you need a saved local copy.
