“Windows installer” can mean a downloaded program setup file, Windows setup files on a USB or DVD, or an app that is already installed. Start with the right case: look in Downloads for a program installer, open the installation-media drive to find Windows setup, or use Start and Windows Search to find an installed app. These are different things: finding an app does not locate its original installer.
Find a downloaded program installer
-
Open File Explorer and select Downloads in the navigation pane. Look for the program name or a likely setup filename.

If it is not there, search a relevant folder. For a broader search, select This PC in File Explorer and search for the program name or a term such as
setup. Searching This PC can take longer. Microsoft describes these search options in its file and app search guidance.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Find an installer on a disc
If a program installation disc does not start automatically, insert it, open the disc in File Explorer, and browse for Setup.exe or Install.exe. Microsoft says these are common names for a disc installer. AutoPlay settings can affect what happens when a disc or removable device is inserted. See Microsoft’s instructions for installing programs from a disc.
Find Windows setup on a USB drive or DVD
Connect the installation media, open File Explorer, and select its drive. For an in-place reinstall—started while you are signed in to Windows—open the media’s root directory and run setup.exe. Approve the prompt asking whether the app can make changes, then follow setup and review the choices about what to keep. If you are upgrading to Windows 11 and no setup window appears, Microsoft also directs users to select the media in File Explorer and run setup manually. See Microsoft’s reinstall steps and its Windows 11 installation options.
This is not the same as starting the computer from the USB or DVD. Booting from media is a route to a clean installation; Microsoft warns that a clean install removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Back up important files before reinstalling, and choose the route that matches whether you want to keep anything on the current installation.

Create Windows installation media if you do not have it
Use Microsoft’s official Windows installation-media instructions and select the download route for the version you need. The page provides a Media Creation Tool for Windows 11 and a separate route for Windows 10. Microsoft’s instructions allow creation of a bootable USB drive or an ISO; an ISO can be used with a virtual machine or to make a DVD.

For USB media, Microsoft specifies a blank flash drive with at least 8 GB. Creating the media deletes the drive’s contents, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
-
Choose USB for a physical PC when you need bootable media; choose ISO if you will use it with a virtual machine or make a DVD.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides standard free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10; see the current status on its media-creation page.
Choose the right route for what you need
| Your situation | What to do | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Windows starts, and you want to repair or reinstall it | Open setup.exe from the installation media in File Explorer, then review setup’s keep options. |
This starts setup from within Windows; it is different from booting from the drive. |
| The PC will not start, or you want a fresh installation | Use bootable installation media and follow the clean-install route. | A clean install removes files, apps, device customizations, and settings; back up first. |
| You do not have installation media | Use Microsoft’s official media-creation instructions and choose USB or ISO for your intended use. | Creating USB media erases that drive’s contents. |
| You are looking for an app already installed | Search from Start or Windows Search, or check Installed apps in Settings. | The installed app is not its original setup file. See Microsoft’s guide to checking whether an app is installed. |
Finding setup is separate from Windows activation
Locating or running setup does not by itself answer whether Windows will activate. Microsoft says some reinstall situations may require a product key, while a digital license does not require manual key entry. Many modern devices have a key embedded in firmware that can be applied automatically when it matches the Windows version and edition. Where a key is located depends on how Windows was acquired; consult Microsoft’s product-key guidance.
