To find out whether your PC runs Windows 11 Home, Pro, or another edition, open Settings > System > About and read Edition under Windows specifications. The other methods below help you reach that information or check related details such as version, build, and system type.
Six ways to check your Windows 11 edition and related details
| Method | What it tells you | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Settings > System > About | The installed Windows edition, plus separate version and device details | Checking Home, Pro, or another edition |
| Search for About in Settings | The same About page and Edition field | Opening the edition information quickly |
| Run winver | Windows version and build information | Sharing release details with support |
| Run System Information (msinfo32) | A broader view of hardware, system components, and software environment | General system diagnostics |
| Review device specifications in About | System type and other device details, separate from edition | Checking architecture or device specifications |
| Check About before reinstalling Windows | The installed edition needed to match the digital license | Choosing an edition during a reinstall |
1. Check Edition in Settings
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Under Windows specifications, find Edition. The value shown there identifies the installed edition. Microsoft documents this route in its guide to finding information about a Windows device.
The nearby version field is not the edition. For example, edition answers whether Windows is Home or Pro; version and build identify the software release and its build.
2. Search Settings for About
If you do not want to navigate through the Settings categories, open Settings and search for About, then open the matching system result. Read Edition under Windows specifications. This is another route to the same page, not a separate source of edition data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Use winver for version and build
- Select the taskbar search box or open Start search.
- Type
winverand open the result. - Read the version and build information in the dialog.
winver is useful when a support conversation asks which Windows release or build is installed. Microsoft describes it as a way to check Windows version and build in its Windows Update Assistant guidance. For the edition itself, use the Edition field on the About page.

4. Open System Information (msinfo32)
- Search Start or the taskbar for
msinfo32. - Open System Information and inspect the system summary and relevant categories.
This built-in utility gathers information about hardware, system components, and the software environment. It is useful when you need more than an edition label; it is usually unnecessary for a simple Home-versus-Pro check. Microsoft notes that some driver status details may be limited without administrator privileges and that hardware information is unavailable in Safe Mode. See Microsoft’s description of the System Information tool.
5. Use About to check system type—not edition
On Settings > System > About, look under Device specifications for system details such as system type. That information is distinct from the edition shown under Windows specifications. Architecture does not tell you whether the edition is Home or Pro; Microsoft states that Windows 11 is 64-bit only in its 32-bit and 64-bit Windows FAQ.
