There is no single default IP address for every network. If you want to open your router’s settings, find the router address shown for your device’s active connection—usually labeled Default Gateway, Router, or Gateway. A manufacturer’s factory address is only a model-specific starting point and may have been changed.
What “default IP address” means
An IP address identifies a network interface or device within a particular network. “Default IP address” can refer to a factory-configured address used to manage a device, or it can be used informally to mean the router address a connected device uses as its default gateway. These are different roles, even though one router address can serve both purposes in a simple home network.
A default gateway is the router a device sends traffic to when that traffic needs to leave its local network. Cisco’s networking glossary explains the distinction between device-specific default addresses and the gateway role; its IOS command reference also uses “default gateway” in a specific configuration context.

Examples of factory addresses—and their limits
Factory addresses depend on the manufacturer and product family. For example, TP-Link says most of its standard routers use 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, while its Deco mesh systems use 192.168.68.1. Its support guide was last updated April 17, 2026. These are examples for the product groups named by TP-Link, not universal router addresses.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
D-Link’s FAQ for the ADSL router/modem products it covers gives 192.168.1.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The subnet mask is part of that product-specific guidance; it does not make the address a default for other devices. A network administrator or setup process may also change a router’s address.
For an unfamiliar router, do not assume that 192.168.1.1 is correct. Check the current gateway or router value on a device connected to the intended network, or consult the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Find the router address on your connected device
Connect to the network whose router you want to manage, then inspect the active connection’s details. The field name and menu path vary by operating-system version.

| Device | What to look for | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Default Gateway; TP-Link also describes an IPv4 DNS server field in its settings guidance | Use the address shown for the active network connection. |
| macOS | Router | Check the active network connection’s details. |
| iPhone or iPad | Router | Open the details for the connected Wi-Fi network. |
| Android | Gateway | Find the value in the connected network’s details; menus vary by version. |
| ChromeOS | Gateway | Check the active network’s connection details. |
TP-Link’s cross-platform guide describes these labels and lookup options. Nintendo’s router settings instructions likewise direct users to find the address, often under “Default Gateway,” and enter it in a browser to reach the settings page.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Open the router settings page
- Join the intended router’s Wi-Fi network or connect to it using an Ethernet cable.
- Find the active connection’s Default Gateway, Router, or Gateway value.
- Enter that IP address in your browser’s address bar. This opens the router’s local settings page when the address and connection are correct.
- Sign in using the credentials configured for that router. The IP address gets you to the page; it is not the username or password.
If the address does not open the settings page
- Check the network: Make sure your device is connected to the router you intend to manage, rather than a guest network, another access point, or mobile data.
- Check the live value: Use the current gateway/router field instead of relying on a remembered factory address. The LAN address may have been changed during setup or later configuration.
- Use model-specific guidance: Check the label or documentation for your exact device. ASUS says its router’s default can be found on the device label and describes using ASUS Device Discovery to locate ASUS network devices in its support guide.
- Do not reset as the first fix: A factory reset can erase customized network settings. Check the connection and address, then follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps before considering a reset.
Keep the two meanings straight
If someone asks for a router’s “default IP,” they may mean its model-specific factory management address. If you are trying to reach your own router, the useful value is usually the current router address shown by your connected device as its gateway. They may match, but the gateway field is the better starting point when the factory value is unknown or has changed.
