A crypto wallet address is a blockchain-specific destination you share so someone can send cryptocurrency to you. Find it in your wallet’s Receive flow, and check that the asset and network match the sender’s instructions. An address is designed to be shared; your private key and recovery phrase are secrets that must never be shared.

What a crypto wallet address means

A wallet address is an identifier used to direct a transaction to a recipient under a blockchain’s rules. Your wallet app displays or manages addresses and lets you interact with the network; the cryptocurrency itself is represented on the blockchain ledger, not stored inside the address or app. The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control describes an address as something used to receive virtual currency, in contrast to a private key used to transfer it: OFAC FAQ 559.

Think of the address as the destination information for a payment, not as an account password. The analogy to a bank account is limited: blockchain addresses are network-specific, and on transparent blockchains, transactions and balances associated with an address may be publicly inspectable.

Address, public key, private key, and recovery phrase

These terms refer to different things. Ethereum.org explains that an Ethereum address is derived from a public key, so calling every address a public key is not technically precise. See Ethereum accounts for the relationship.

  • Wallet: Software, a device, or a service that lets you interact with an account and manage or use keys.
  • Address: The destination identifier you give someone who is sending crypto.
  • Public key: A cryptographic value related to an address; it is not the same as the private key.
  • Private key: A secret credential that can authorize transactions or spending.
  • Recovery phrase: Secret words used to restore access to a wallet. Anyone who obtains them may be able to control the wallet.

With a custodial wallet, a service controls the keys on your behalf. With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for securing recovery information. Investor.gov’s Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors explains these custody roles and key distinctions.

How to find and share a receiving address

  1. Open the wallet or account where you want to receive funds.
  2. Select the exact asset, then choose Receive (the label and steps can vary by wallet).
  3. Check the network shown in the receiving instructions. If the sender is transferring a token available on multiple networks, confirm that the sender will use a network your receiving wallet supports.
  4. Copy the address or show its QR code to the sender. Avoid manually typing a long address. Ethereum.org’s wallet guide describes this receive flow.

Ethereum.org states that each Ethereum account has its own receiving address, a unique sequence of letters and numbers. Ethereum addresses begin with 0x, but that prefix alone does not prove that a particular asset or network is compatible.

Does one address work for every cryptocurrency?

No. Addresses and receiving instructions are tied to a blockchain or network, and a familiar-looking format is not proof that a transfer is supported. Bitcoin uses its own address formats and network rules; Ethereum addresses have a different format. Some assets may exist on more than one network, so check the exact asset and network the recipient supports rather than relying on a matching symbol or prefix.

Before sending, follow the recipient’s instructions and confirm the full destination address and network. Bitcoin.org advises checking the entire address and notes that transactions are irreversible: Avoid Scams.

Is it safe to share a crypto wallet address?

Usually, yes: a receiving address alone does not give someone the key needed to spend your funds. But shareability is not privacy. Bitcoin transactions are publicly recorded, and someone who knows an address may be able to inspect associated transactions and balances. Bitcoin.org outlines this privacy consideration in Some things you need to know.

Never send a private key or recovery phrase to someone claiming to be support, and do not store those secrets in screenshots that could sync to cloud services. Ethereum.org’s security and scam-prevention guidance warns against exposing keys and recovery phrases; legitimate support should not ask you for them. If you use self-custody and lose the recovery credentials, you may permanently lose access.
