To locate a capture card in OBS, add a Video Capture Device source and check its Device list. If your card is missing from that list, troubleshoot device detection; if it appears but shows a black preview or no input, troubleshoot the signal instead. The steps that apply depend on the card model, operating system, and software.
Find the capture card in OBS
In OBS Studio, open Sources, select +, and choose Video Capture Device. Create a new source or select an existing one, then open its Device drop-down. If the card is detected and supported by that setup, its name should appear there.
For its Video Capture hardware on Windows 10 or 11, Elgato’s OBS setup guide says to select Elgato Video Capture from the device list. That device name and procedure are specific to the product described in the guide; other capture cards may use different names or require different setup.

| The card is not listed in the source’s Device menu | OBS is not presenting the device as an available capture source. | Try the basic reconnection steps below, then consult support for the exact card model. |
| The card is listed, but the preview is black or says there is no input | OBS can see a device entry, but the expected video signal is not appearing. | Check the signal path and the model-specific guidance for a black preview or no-input symptom. |
AVerMedia’s BU113 FAQ index lists separate questions about a USB capture device not being found, a black software preview, no input signal, and random USB disconnections. Those are useful troubleshooting categories, not proof that every model shares the same causes or fixes.
If the device does not appear in the list
First try a basic reconnect, then check instructions for your exact product. Elgato recommends deactivating and reactivating the OBS source, or unplugging and reconnecting the USB device, for the no-audio symptom covered in its Video Capture guide. These are model-specific checks, not guaranteed fixes for every card that is missing from OBS.

The same Elgato guide notes that, in its documented setup, driver installation may require disconnecting the device first or reconnecting it when prompted. Follow that sequence only if it matches your hardware and the manufacturer’s instructions; the available guidance does not establish a universal driver requirement or universal Windows troubleshooting path for all capture cards.
If the device appears but the preview has no input
Do not repeat device-list troubleshooting as though it were a detection failure. Confirm that the capture card is receiving the intended source signal, then use the manufacturer’s guidance for your model and the specific symptom—such as a black preview or a no-input message. The reviewed AVerMedia FAQ is an index for the BU113, so it does not diagnose other cards or establish a single fix.

macOS permissions: check only when the guidance matches
Elgato says camera and microphone privacy permissions can affect recognition for certain devices on macOS. However, its privacy guidance is labeled legacy/EOL and names older products. Treat it as relevant only when your device and software combination match the article; it is not universal current guidance for all capture cards or macOS versions.

OBS’s certification page explains that certified devices are tested with the latest OBS Studio release and must meet OBS requirements for functionality and performance. Its criteria include native OBS compatibility, under 80 ms average additional latency, zero-latency passthrough when present, seamless mode changes, audio synchronization for at least four hours of consecutive use, and usable HDR tone mapping when HDR is supported. These are certification criteria, not specifications or measured performance guarantees for every capture card.
