Open your device’s Wi-Fi settings and look for a network name marked “2.4G” or “2.4 GHz.” If your router uses one name for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, the Wi-Fi list may not show which band your device is using; check the router’s app or admin settings instead.
Find the 2.4 GHz network in your Wi-Fi list
-
Open the Wi-Fi settings on the phone, computer, or other device you want to connect.
-
Inspect the available network names, also called SSIDs. If you see separate names such as “Home-2.4G” and “Home-5G,” select the one labeled 2.4 GHz.

If there is only one name for your home network, it may be shared across both bands. Connect to it normally if your router steers devices automatically; seeing that name alone does not tell you whether your device selected 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

Microsoft explains that Windows can automatically connect to the best available band when a router uses one name for multiple bands. Its guidance recommends different network names when you need to identify the bands in Windows: Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance.
When the network has one shared name
Check your router’s app or admin page for settings named “Smart Connect,” “band steering,” or per-band Wi-Fi settings. The names and available controls differ by router and firmware, so there is no universal menu path.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
If a smart-home device’s setup process specifically requires your phone to be on 2.4 GHz, look for an option to temporarily give the bands separate names or temporarily disable 5 GHz. Use those options only if your router supports them, and restore your preferred configuration after setup. A device that supports only 2.4 GHz may still connect to that radio under a shared network name, depending on the router and the device’s setup flow.

Microsoft’s Windows guidance favors distinct names for identifying bands, while Apple recommends using the same network name across router bands for Apple devices. Google says Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google Wifi use band steering to guide connected devices to the band with the best performance. These are product-specific recommendations and behaviors, not one rule for every router: Apple’s recommended Wi-Fi router settings and Google Nest’s explanation of Wi-Fi bands and band steering.

What 2.4 GHz is useful for
Choosing 2.4 GHz can help when a device requires that band or is farther from the router. It generally reaches farther and passes through obstacles better than 5 GHz, and more older or smart-home devices support it. The trade-offs are generally slower throughput and greater congestion. 5 GHz is typically faster and has more non-overlapping channels, but its range and passage through obstacles are generally more limited. These are tendencies, not guarantees: performance also depends on the router, interference, building layout, and device.
If you cannot see or connect to the 2.4 GHz network
-
Check that the router is broadcasting 2.4 GHz. In its app or admin page, confirm the 2.4 GHz radio is enabled and the network is being broadcast. Use the router’s model-specific help to find the relevant controls.

Check the network name. The router’s app or label may show the SSID to look for. A missing “2.4G” label does not prove the band is unavailable; it may share a name with other bands.

On Windows, confirm adapter support. If you can see another band but cannot connect to 2.4 GHz, or the network does not appear, check whether the Wi-Fi adapter supports that frequency and whether its driver needs attention. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide recommends trying another available band and testing with another device.

Test another device. If another device can see and join the network, the issue may be with the original device’s Wi-Fi capability or configuration. If none can see it, check the router’s radio and broadcast settings.

Do not hide the network name as a fix. Hiding an SSID does not make band selection easier; Microsoft advises against hidden network names in its Wi-Fi guidance.
Do you need a Wi-Fi analyzer?
Usually not just to find a named network. A Wi-Fi analyzer can help visualize nearby networks and channel overlap if you are investigating congestion or unstable performance. Microsoft’s guidance discusses analyzer apps and recommends channels 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz channel selection: Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance.
