It lands slightly east of the point directly below the tower. The object is already moving east with Earth when released. As it falls closer to Earth’s rotational axis, conservation of angular momentum makes its angular speed increase slightly, so it moves ahead of the ground beneath it.
Why the answer is not west or directly below
The tempting westward answer treats the falling object as if it began motionless while Earth turned underneath it. But the object shares the tower’s eastward motion before it is released, and it retains that motion as it falls.
Nor does it land exactly at the tower’s base. Its eastward motion changes slightly during the fall: as its distance from Earth’s rotational axis decreases, its angular velocity increases. The result is a small eastward lead over the surface point below.

For this explanation, the key quantity is angular momentum about Earth’s rotation axis. In a simplified description, it is proportional to angular velocity multiplied by the square of distance from that axis (ωr²). As the falling object’s distance from the axis shrinks, its angular velocity must rise to conserve angular momentum. That makes it travel a little farther east than the ground during the fall.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A spinning skater offers a useful analogy: drawing in their arms brings mass closer to the rotation axis and makes them spin faster. The falling object’s motion is not identical to a skater’s, but the analogy captures why moving closer to an axis can increase rotational speed.
How far east does it land?
The displacement is small, not a tower-height-sized drift. In Alex Bellos’s Guardian solution, the illustrative estimate is about 11 cm for a drop from Eiffel Tower height at the equator. That is a specific hypothetical example, not a universal value for towers at other latitudes or heights.

The simple explanation isolates the rotation effect. It is not a full calculation of a real fall’s three-dimensional path, including latitude, air resistance and Earth’s shape.
What Newton’s puzzle asked
The Guardian’s multiple-choice version asks whether an object dropped from a high tower lands slightly west, slightly east or directly below. The eastward answer is the one that accounts for both its initial shared motion with the tower and its changing angular speed as it falls.

Newton considered the problem in a 28 November 1679 letter to Robert Hooke. The digitized transcription describes a body that does not descend exactly along the perpendicular, but moves toward the east side. The Guardian quotes Newton calling the conclusion “quite contrary to ye opinion of ye vulgar.” Hooke’s correspondence rekindled Newton’s interest in gravity and motion, but this one problem should not be treated as the sole cause of the later Principia.
