If your game runs in a window or borderless window and uses DirectX 10 or DirectX 11, try Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games setting. Microsoft says it changes how compatible games are presented and reduces frame latency; it does not promise a frame-rate boost for every PC or game. The title’s “GPU mode” is ambiguous: this is the best-supported match, but it is not the same as Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS).
What the Windows setting does
Microsoft says Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless windowed mode. It moves those games from the legacy blt-model presentation to the newer flip-model. Microsoft says this reduces frame latency and enables features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.
That is a description of the feature’s intended behavior, not a guarantee of higher FPS or smoother play on every system. Microsoft’s support guidance gives no benchmark result for a particular PC or game. The result depends on the game, graphics hardware, drivers, display, and settings.
How to turn it on or off in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Default settings, switch on Optimizations for windowed games.
- Close and restart the game so it can use the changed setting.
To reverse the change globally, return to the same Graphics page and switch the option off. If Auto HDR is on, Microsoft says it enables Optimizations for windowed games automatically; turn Auto HDR off first if you want to disable the optimization globally.

Change the setting for one game
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the game and choose Options. If the game is not listed, add it using the controls on that page.
- Switch off Optimizations for windowed games, save, and restart that game.
A per-game override is useful if one title behaves worse after the change while other compatible games benefit.
Is this HAGS or Fullscreen Optimizations?
Windows has several graphics features that can be described informally as a GPU mode. Their names and effects are not interchangeable:

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
| Feature | What it changes | Documented scope |
|---|---|---|
| Optimizations for windowed games | Changes the presentation model for compatible games, from blt-model to flip-model. | DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed or borderless windowed mode; Microsoft says it reduces frame latency. |
| Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) | Moves most GPU scheduling work from Windows to a dedicated GPU-based scheduling processor while Windows retains application prioritization. | Requires supported hardware and drivers. Microsoft’s technical explanation describes reduced scheduling overhead, not a universal gaming improvement. |
| Fullscreen Optimizations | Lets supported fullscreen-exclusive games run behind the scenes in an optimized borderless format. | Concerns fullscreen presentation, rather than the Windows 11 windowed-game toggle. It can be disabled for an individual game when troubleshooting. |
Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
HAGS is a separate optional Windows setting. Microsoft’s Steve Pronovost, Partner Development Lead, wrote in a June 30, 2020 DirectX Developer Blog post: “With the right hardware and drivers, Windows can now offload most of GPU scheduling to a dedicated GPU-based scheduling processor.” The option is available only when both the hardware and drivers support it. Microsoft says most users should not notice significant changes, so a claim that HAGS always raises game performance is not supported by that explanation. See Microsoft’s Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling article for the technical background.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you meant HAGS rather than Optimizations for windowed games, look for Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows graphics settings if your system supports it. Availability varies with hardware and drivers. Do not expect that switch to have the same effect as changing a game’s windowed presentation mode.

Fullscreen Optimizations
Microsoft’s DirectX article explains that supported games using exclusive fullscreen can be presented in an optimized borderless format, retaining fullscreen-like performance while allowing conveniences such as faster Alt-Tab and overlays. It also describes disabling the feature for a specific executable as a troubleshooting option. This is distinct from the Windows 11 setting for windowed and borderless-windowed games. Check the scope before judging the result: the windowed-game option is intended for DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless mode. A game using another graphics API or running in a different mode is outside the stated scope. After changing the toggle, restart the game and compare the same scene and settings under similar conditions. If performance or responsiveness is worse, restore the previous setting globally or use the per-game override.

Keep the conclusion specific to your setup. Microsoft documents a latency-oriented presentation change, but the official guidance does not establish a measured uplift for a particular game, PC, or display.
