The best workout app is the one that fits the exercise you want to do—not a promise that an app will make you fit or healthy. For free general workouts, start with Nike Training Club; for coached classes, look at Peloton or Apple Fitness+; for outdoor running and cycling, consider Nike Run Club or Strava; and for strength planning, consider Fitbod.
These are category matches, not a single ranking from hands-on testing for this article. Compare the activity, coaching style, equipment, device support, and current subscription terms before committing.
Choose an app by the kind of exercise you will actually do
A workout library, a training plan, and an activity tracker solve different problems. Decide first whether you want guided sessions at home, a structure for strength training, or tools for outdoor activity. The descriptions below draw on Apple’s App Store editorial selections, Tom’s Guide’s app roundup, and WIRED’s roundup; they are not clinical evidence or a controlled comparison of health outcomes.

Check equipment, device support, and subscriptions against your routine
- Equipment: If you want to exercise at home without buying gear, look for bodyweight sessions and inspect the requirements for each workout. Other routines may call for dumbbells or machines; a class library can include both.
- Coaching: Choose follow-along instruction if you want a class, a planning app if you want suggested strength sessions, or a tracker if your priority is recording outdoor activity. These formats are not interchangeable.
- Devices: Confirm the app works with your phone and any watch you rely on. Apple Fitness+ has a reported Apple Watch connection, but check current requirements for your device and region before paying.
- Free versus paid: Determine whether the sessions, plans, or tracking features you care about are in the free tier. Treat source-reported prices as examples and confirm the current recurring charge and trial or cancellation terms in the app store or service.
- Location privacy: For an outdoor activity tracker, check location permission options and the current privacy policy. Do not assume that social features or GPS recording have the same settings across apps.
What a workout app can—and cannot—establish
The sources describe app features and editorial assessments; they do not provide a reliable health-outcome statistic showing that using a particular app makes people fitter or healthier. Treat an app as a tool for accessing instruction, planning sessions, or recording activity—not as a health guarantee. If you have a medical condition, injury, or uncertainty about what exercise is appropriate, seek advice from a qualified health professional rather than relying on an app recommendation.
