If you can’t find an option to send a text message, the cause may be your phone’s messaging settings, carrier support, mobile service, SIM or plan—not a broken phone. First identify the missing control and whether you use an iPhone or Android: “Send as Text Message,” group messaging, RCS, MMS and iMessage are different services with different requirements.

Identify what is missing and when it happens

Note the exact label of the control you can’t find, then check whether the issue affects every conversation or only one recipient. A problem with one contact may be specific to that person’s number or email address; check that the details are correct. Also note whether individual messages work but group messages do not.

Consider what changed just before the problem began: a new phone, a switch between iPhone and Android, an app or operating-system update, or a carrier change. These details help distinguish a device setting from an account or service limitation.

Message type Connection or setup to check
SMS Usually requires a mobile network connection. Apple says SMS over Wi-Fi may be available when Wi-Fi Calling is enabled.
MMS Carrier support and service configuration matter; check with your carrier if the feature is unavailable.
RCS Availability depends on the messaging app, connectivity and carrier support. RCS can be unavailable even when SMS works.
iMessage Uses Wi-Fi or mobile data. On Apple devices, check that the phone number is selected for iMessage if messages arrive on one device but not another.

Apple explains that iMessage uses Wi-Fi or mobile data, while SMS needs a mobile network connection; Wi-Fi Calling can enable SMS over Wi-Fi. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad messaging troubleshooting guide.

Fix a missing text-message option on iPhone or iPad

  1. Check the connection for the message type. For SMS, confirm that the phone has mobile network service. If you’re relying on Wi-Fi, check whether Wi-Fi Calling is enabled and supported for your service.
  2. Verify the recipient. Check the phone number or email address, especially if messages fail only in one conversation.
  3. Look for the setting. On current Apple guidance, go to Settings > Apps > Messages and look for “Send as Text Message.” The menu path can vary by operating-system version.
  4. Ask your carrier about missing controls. Apple says that if “Send as Text Message” or Group Messaging does not appear, the network provider might not support the feature. Ask whether your plan and service support the specific message type or group feature you need.

If messages reach one Apple device but not another, check whether your phone number is selected for iMessage sending and receiving on the device that is missing them. Apple’s messaging troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.

Fix texting or RCS problems on Android with Google Messages

  1. Update Google Messages and make sure it is the default texting app. Google’s instructions are in its troubleshooting guide for sending or receiving messages.
  2. Check the SIM and account. Make sure the SIM is properly inserted, your plan includes messaging, and any required credit or balance is available.
  3. Check signal and airplane mode. Confirm the phone has a signal and airplane mode is off.
  4. Check carrier support for the specific service. Your carrier may support SMS but not RCS, or may not have enabled a particular feature. If Google Messages indicates that the carrier disabled RCS, contact the carrier. Google’s RCS activation troubleshooting explains the relevant checks.
  5. If you recently switched from iPhone, deactivate iMessage for your number. Google advises doing this when moving to Android so messages are no longer directed to the iMessage registration.

When the carrier is the next step

Contact your carrier if a setting or message type is missing, the app reports that the carrier disabled RCS, or your SIM, plan, signal and app setup look correct but texting still fails. Ask specifically whether your account supports the missing feature—such as SMS, MMS, RCS or group messaging—and whether it is enabled for your line. A missing control alone does not show that the phone is defective; message-sending capability can depend on service support and device configuration.
