LoadLibrary failed with error 126 means Windows returned ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND: it could not find a required module. The code does not identify which file is missing. The requested DLL may be absent, but one of its dependencies may also be missing or incompatible. The right fix depends on the application and the module it needs.
What LoadLibrary error 126 means
LoadLibrary asks Windows to load a DLL or executable module into a process. When the call fails, it returns NULL; Microsoft advises developers to call GetLastError for extended error information. Error 126 is ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND, “The specified module could not be found.” Microsoft’s LoadLibrary documentation and its system error codes reference define these behaviors.
The message alone does not reveal the absent file. A program may request one DLL while Windows fails to locate another DLL that the requested module depends on. Microsoft’s DLL troubleshooting guidance explains that dependency problems can prevent a program from running, including when a dependency is removed, changed, overwritten, or incompatible.

How to identify what Windows cannot find
Record the failure details
Before changing files or settings, note the application and action that trigger the message, the full error text, your Windows version, and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. If the message or application log names a DLL, record its exact name. For developers, also record the argument passed to LoadLibrary and capture GetLastError immediately after the failed call.

Check the requested module and its dependencies
Confirm whether the application can locate the named module, then examine the module’s dependency chain. A DLL that exists on disk can still fail to load if Windows cannot find one of its dependencies or a dependency is incompatible. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page discusses dependency-scanning tools; its references to Dependency Walker are tool guidance, not confirmation that a particular version is current.
Observe the paths Windows probes
Reproduce the failure while monitoring the process’s file activity. Microsoft describes using Process Monitor to observe file operations associated with loads. This can help distinguish a missing file from a search-path problem, but a failed probe alone is not proof that a file is required: applications may check optional locations as part of normal operation. Choose a repair based on what the checks show
- The application or one of its own files is missing or damaged: use the application publisher’s repair or reinstall instructions.
- A documented runtime, driver, or other component is missing: install or repair it using the instructions from the application or component publisher.
- The requested DLL exists, but a dependency is missing or incompatible: repair the identified dependency through its supported installation path rather than replacing the visible DLL alone.
- The failure appears tied to where Windows searches: use the application’s supported configuration or installation procedure. Avoid broad DLL search-path changes; Microsoft warns that search behavior has security implications.
Do not download a standalone DLL from an unverified site or copy one into a Windows directory as a general fix. Error 126 does not establish which file should be replaced, and an isolated DLL may be the wrong version or leave the actual dependency problem unresolved.

A bare module name and a fully qualified path do not produce the same search behavior. Microsoft documents the search strategy for LoadLibrary; a full path limits the search to that path, subject to documented redirection behavior. Verify that the requested name and path are correct, then check that the module’s own dependencies can be resolved. Capture GetLastError immediately after LoadLibrary returns NULL, before another call can replace the error information. Special case: loading from an impersonation thread
Microsoft documents a narrower case involving impersonation threads and process-token access rights. If the application loads modules while impersonating another user, check whether the process token has the required access to the executables being loaded and follow Microsoft’s guidance for that scenario: DLL loading from an impersonation thread fails with error 126. This is a specific execution-context issue, not a general explanation for ordinary desktop-app failures.
