To look up an email address, search the exact address in quotation marks, check any result at its original source, then verify an unexpected message through your email client and an independent official contact route. A public match can suggest an association; it cannot prove who sent a particular email or controls an account.
How to look up an email address
- Search the full address. Enter it in quotation marks in a search engine. Review public business pages, directories, or social profiles that appear, then open the original page and check its context and date. Confirm that the address is actually associated with the person or organization claimed.
- Assess the email separately. Compare the display name with the actual sender address. If your mail client shows authentication information, review it. Be wary of unexpected links and requests for passwords, financial details, or other private information. A search result is only a lead, not proof of message authorship.
- Verify claims independently. If a message claims to be from a company, bank, employer, or public agency, navigate to its established website or use a contact channel you already trust. Do not rely on the message’s links or contact details, and do not reply just to verify it. Google advises going directly to the intended website rather than entering private information through links in suspicious messages (Google Gmail Help: Avoid and report phishing emails).
How to tell whether an unfamiliar email is legitimate
Identity lookup and message verification answer different questions. A public page may show that an address is associated with an organization, but it does not establish that the organization sent the message you received. Sender addresses can be misleading, so consider the message’s context, any authentication indicator your mail client exposes, and whether the request is expected. Treat unexpected requests for sensitive information or urgent action with caution.
- Inspect the actual address, not only the display name.
- Do not open unexpected links or provide private information through them.
- Reach the claimed sender using a known official website or contact channel.
Google’s guidance covers checking sender details and authentication signals, avoiding suspicious links, and reporting phishing (Google Gmail Help: Avoid and report phishing emails).

What people-search sites can—and cannot—tell you
People-search sites may compile information from data brokers, public social profiles, and public records. Their reports can include extensive personal details, but a listing does not prove that its subject authored a specific email. Handle such reports carefully, especially when they expose sensitive information. The Federal Trade Commission explains how these sites collect and sell information and what an opt-out can and cannot do (FTC: What To Know About People Search Sites That Sell Your Information).

How to remove your own email address from Google Search
Google’s Results about you feature lets eligible users monitor Search for personal contact information, including email addresses, and request removal of qualifying results. Availability and approval can vary. A removal from Google Search affects the search result, not the source page where the information is published; Google may also deny a request in some cases. See Google Search Help: Find and remove personal info in Google Search results for the feature and its current process.

Google Search removal and a people-search-site opt-out are separate actions. The FTC recommends locating the sites that list you, finding each site’s opt-out instructions, submitting requests, and repeating the process as needed. Opting out does not erase underlying public records, and information may reappear.

The FTC notes that paid services may submit requests on your behalf. Before paying for a people-search opt-out service, compare its stated coverage, whether it reports which sites it contacted and the outcomes, whether it rescans for reappearing information, and what information it requires from you. These services are optional convenience; they do not erase public records. See the FTC’s people-search site guidance for more information.
