A random white box can be a brief app window, a display glitch, or—in a different case—a whole blank screen. The box alone does not identify the cause or prove malware. On Windows, first catch the app or process that appears with it; if it is Microsoft Edge, Microsoft documents a brief blank Edge window as a known symptom and provides targeted fixes.
First determine what kind of “white box” you’re seeing
Before changing settings, note whether the white area is a movable window or whether the display itself is flickering, scrambled, or blank. A small window may have a title bar, app icon, or taskbar entry; a rendering artifact may not. Also note when it appears—such as at startup, after unlocking, after waking the PC, or while using a particular app—and whether it closes by itself. A screenshot or phone photo can help distinguish a window from a display artifact.
- Brief floating window: Look for the app or process that appears at the same time.
- Whole screen flickers or scrambles: Use the flicker checks below; these are different from a single popup.
- Screen is genuinely blank: Follow the separate blank-screen branch below.
Identify the app when the box appears
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc while the box is visible, and look for an app or process that appeared at the same time. If you see Microsoft Edge or msedge.exe, the Edge-specific steps below are relevant. If you cannot identify it, do not assume a particular app is responsible: the appearance alone is not enough to name the process.

Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance describes the symptom as “A blank Edge window appears briefly and then closes.” Its steps apply when Edge is identified, not to every white popup. Try one change at a time and check whether the symptom returns.

- End leftover Edge tasks. In Task Manager, select the Edge processes and choose End task, then restart Edge. Microsoft notes that background Edge processes left over from a previous session can prevent a clean start. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting steps
- Test graphics acceleration. If Edge stays open long enough, enter
edge://settings/systemin its address bar and temporarily turn off Use graphics acceleration when available. If that resolves the blank window, update the graphics driver and then turn acceleration back on, as Microsoft recommends. - Check whether the profile or an extension is involved. Test Edge with a temporary profile. If Edge starts cleanly there, the original profile or an extension may be involved. Microsoft’s guidance describes creating a new profile and moving the data you want to keep.
- Update or repair Edge if it remains unstable. To repair it, open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair. Microsoft says repair should not affect browser data or settings. See Microsoft’s Edge update and repair guidance.
If the whole screen flickers or scrambles
Microsoft says screen flickering in Windows 10 and Windows 11 is usually caused by a display driver or an incompatible app. Open Task Manager and watch whether it flickers along with the rest of the screen. If Task Manager flickers too, a display-driver issue is more likely; if Task Manager stays steady while the rest of the display flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. This clue is for system-wide flicker, not a universal test for a small white popup.
Depending on when the flicker began, Microsoft recommends updating, rolling back, or uninstalling the display driver, or updating or removing the app that may be incompatible. If the display is actually blank
A blank screen is not the same as a brief white app window. For a blank display, Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance includes these checks:

- Press
Windows+Ctrl+Shift+Bto reset the graphics driver. - If a cursor is visible, press
Ctrl+Alt+Del, open Task Manager, and restart Windows Explorer if it is listed. - If the problem persists, use Microsoft’s blank-screen steps for Safe Mode and display-driver update or rollback.

When to check for unwanted software
A white box by itself is not evidence of malware. Consider unwanted software only if there are other signs, such as unwanted advertising or behavior you cannot explain. Microsoft distinguishes potentially unwanted applications from malware and recommends removing software you do not recognize or need, updating security intelligence, and running a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan. If unwanted software persists, Microsoft says to consider Microsoft Defender Offline. Details are in Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance.
