To turn off Find My on an iPhone you have, open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone, switch off Find My iPhone, then enter your Apple Account password and confirm. Do this when preparing to sell, give away, trade in, or service the device if Apple’s service process requires it. If the iPhone is lost or stolen, keep Find My on: disabling it also removes Activation Lock.
Apple’s current iPhone guide is labeled for iOS 27; wording and paths may differ on older iOS versions. Apple’s instructions explain the setting and its privacy implications.
What changes when you turn off Find My
Turning off Find My stops the service from locating that iPhone and automatically removes Activation Lock. Activation Lock is tied to Find My: Apple says it helps prevent someone else from activating a device, and Apple Account authentication is required to turn Find My off, erase the device, or reactivate and use it. Turning it off may suit a privacy choice, but it also removes the iPhone’s location-recovery and Activation Lock protections.

When you should turn it off
Before selling, giving away, or trading in your iPhone
Turn off Find My as part of preparing the iPhone for its next owner. Erasing the iPhone also turns off Find My and Activation Lock, but you should follow Apple’s complete transfer steps so your personal data is erased and the device is ready for someone else. Apple’s sale, gift, and trade-in instructions cover the full process.
Before service, if Apple’s process requires it
Follow the current preparation instructions for your specific service appointment rather than disabling Find My by default. Apple’s service guidance, dated September 16, 2026, varies by operating-system generation. If you turned Find My off for service, turn it back on afterward. When not to turn it off
If the iPhone is lost or stolen
Keep Find My enabled and mark the iPhone as lost. Do not remove it from Find My, even if you remotely erase it: removing the device releases Activation Lock and can make it easier for a thief to unlock and resell. Apple Support’s lost-iPhone guidance says, “Don’t remove the device from Find My, even if you remotely erase it.” If you have an AppleCare+ Theft and Loss claim, Apple specifically says not to remove the iPhone from Find My or your Apple Account. Follow Apple’s lost-iPhone guidance.

If Stolen Device Protection is enabled
Apple says Find My must remain on while Stolen Device Protection is enabled, so you cannot turn off Find My until you disable that protection. Turning Stolen Device Protection off away from familiar locations may trigger a security delay. Plan ahead for a sale or trade-in, and follow Apple’s Stolen Device Protection instructions; Apple says to turn the protection off before selling, giving away, or trading in the iPhone.

How to turn off Find My on the iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of Settings.
- Tap Find My, then Find My iPhone.
- Switch off Find My iPhone.
- Enter your Apple Account password and confirm.

If you already transferred the phone and it is still attached to your account, use Find My on another device or Find Devices on iCloud.com to erase it, then remove it from your account to release Activation Lock. If it is offline, the remote erase begins the next time it connects. This is the documented procedure for a device already transferred to a new owner; do not use account removal for a phone that is merely missing. Follow Apple’s instructions for a device you sold or gave away.
