Yes—sometimes. If Find My network was enabled beforehand and your iPhone is supported, Apple says it may be locatable for up to 24 hours after shutdown, or up to 5 hours in power reserve mode. Those are maximum windows, not a promise of continuous tracking or recovery. The key is to set up Find My before the phone goes missing.
How an iPhone can be found after it shuts down
Find My network can help locate a supported iPhone even when it is offline or has been turned off. Nearby Apple devices use Bluetooth to detect it and relay an approximate location to its owner. Apple describes this process as anonymous and encrypted; availability and features can vary by country or region. Apple’s explanation of the Find My network has more detail.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 gives the powered-off locating window as up to 24 hours on a supported iPhone with Find My network enabled, or up to 5 hours in power reserve mode. A device appearing in Find My does not mean its position is precise or updating continuously.

- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap Find My.
- Tap Find My iPhone, then turn on Find My iPhone and Find My network.
- Optionally turn on Send Last Location. This sends the phone’s location when its battery charge becomes critically low; it is distinct from finding the phone after it has shut down.
These settings must be enabled before the phone is lost. If Find My was not on, Apple says the iPhone will not appear in Find My or iCloud.com/find and cannot be marked as lost or remotely erased through Find My.

What to do when the iPhone is missing
- Open the Find My app on another Apple device, or visit iCloud.com/find.
- Select the missing iPhone from the device list and check the location shown.
- Mark it as lost. Lost Mode locks the screen and can display a contact message, giving someone who finds it a way to reach you.

Powered-off location, last location, and low-battery reporting are different

The seven-day period is about how long a last known location may remain visible, not how long a powered-off iPhone can be tracked. See Apple’s lost-device guidance for details.

Temporarily disable finding after power off
If you are concerned that someone else could use this feature to locate you, Apple provides a way to temporarily disable Find My network when turning off the phone. On the shutdown screen, tap iPhone Findable After Power Off beneath the power-off slider and follow the onscreen instructions. Disabling the network also disables this powered-off locating capability. Apple explains the option in its Personal Safety User Guide.

What the feature cannot promise
- The 24-hour and 5-hour windows are maximum periods Apple states for supported devices, not guaranteed recovery times.
- Find My network reports an approximate location through nearby devices; it should not be treated as precise, continuous tracking.
- Find My must have been enabled before the loss for the phone to appear, enter Lost Mode, or be erased remotely through Find My.
- Feature availability may differ by country or region.
