To look for a lost Android phone, go to android.com/find, sign in with the Google Account on the phone, and select the device. Check whether the map shows a current or last known location. If it may be nearby and it is safe to retrieve, use Play sound; if you cannot get it right away, use Mark as lost to lock it and display return details. Contact your carrier promptly if theft is possible. Erase the phone only when protecting its data matters more than keeping Find Hub location access.
Find your phone with Find Hub
- In a browser, open android.com/find, or open Find Hub on another Android phone or tablet.
- Sign in with the Google Account used on the missing phone and choose the phone from the device list. If you are using someone else’s Android device, guest mode lets the owner sign in to Find Hub.
- Review the map and the location information. Check whether it is current or the last known location before deciding where to look.
- If the phone could be nearby and you can retrieve it safely, choose Play sound. Google says this rings the phone at full volume for five minutes, even if it is set to silent or vibrate.
- If you cannot recover it immediately, choose Mark as lost to lock it. You can add a message or contact information to the lock screen so someone who finds it can get in touch.
What to do if the phone may have been stolen
Do not confront someone or enter an unsafe place to retrieve a phone based on a map pin. Use Mark as lost, then contact your mobile carrier promptly to ask about suspending the SIM or service and blocking the handset. Google says a carrier can use the phone’s IMEI to disable it; the carrier’s process depends on the provider and location.
Find Hub can show an IMEI for devices that have one. A Wi-Fi-only tablet, for example, may not have an IMEI. If you cannot recover the phone, secure your Google Account and review account access.
Can Find Hub locate a phone that is offline or turned off?
Remote actions such as locking or erasing require the phone to have power, connect to mobile data or Wi-Fi, be signed in to a Google Account, have Find Hub turned on, and be visible on Google Play. If those conditions are not met, an action may not complete until the phone becomes reachable.

If Find Hub cannot determine the phone’s current location, it may show a last known location if one is available. Google’s offline-finding network can use encrypted recent locations and nearby Android devices to help find supported offline devices. Whether that works depends on the phone, account settings, screen lock, and participation in the network. Android 8.0 and earlier cannot participate in the broader crowdsourced network, though those devices may store encrypted recent locations for themselves and connected accessories. Do not assume that a phone that is powered off can be located live.
How accurate is the location on the map?
Treat the location as a lead, not proof that the phone is exactly at the pin. Google describes GPS as estimating location to around 20 metres in suitable conditions, but GPS can be inaccurate indoors or underground. Nearby Wi-Fi networks can contribute location information, while mobile tower location may be accurate only to a few thousand metres. The map’s radius indicates Google’s confidence in the estimate; a wider radius means the likely search area is less precise.

Choose between sound, lost mode, and erase

When to erase the phone
Erasure is a consequential choice, not just another way to lock the device. Once the phone is erased, you lose location access through Find Hub, which can reduce the chance of tracking it if it later reconnects. An SD card may retain data. If you choose to erase, remember that the Google Account password will be needed to use the phone again if it turns up.
If recovery still seems plausible, Mark as lost is the less final protective step. If the risk to personal data outweighs the value of location access, erase remotely when the phone can receive the command.

Prepare your Android phone before it goes missing
A Google Account added to an Android device automatically turns on Find Hub, according to Google’s help guidance, but do not assume every required setting or condition is in place. Menu names can vary by Android version and manufacturer; some preparation steps apply only to Android 14 and later.

- Check that you know which Google Account is on the phone, and that the device appears in Google Play.
- Verify Location and Find Hub settings, including the offline-finding settings available for your device.
- Sign in at android.com/find and confirm that the phone appears in the device list.
- Set a screen PIN, pattern, or password, and keep a two-step verification backup method available in case you cannot use the missing phone to sign in.
