To check for apps that are hidden from casual view, start with your phone’s built-in app and privacy settings—not a covert monitoring tool. On supported iPhones, check the App Library’s Hidden folder and authenticated settings; on Android, review the installed-app list, permissions, and (Android 12 and later) Privacy Dashboard. These checks can help you find apps or review recent sensor access, but they cannot reveal every hidden or archived conversation inside a messaging app.
What “hidden” can mean
An app missing from the Home Screen is not, by itself, evidence of secret or harmful behavior. It may be in an app library, removed from a Home Screen, locked behind authentication, or hidden by a device-specific feature. A conversation can also be archived or otherwise less visible inside a messaging app while the app itself remains installed. And an app may simply not be on the device.
These are different situations, so use the check that matches the question:

- Is an app locked or hidden by the operating system? Check the platform’s authenticated hidden-app controls.
- Is a conversation hidden inside a messaging service? Review that service’s own settings and official help. A device-level app list does not show conversations.
- Is an app accessing sensitive features? Review available permission and access history. That is an access signal, not proof of hidden chats.
Find hidden apps on an iPhone
Apple’s current guidance describes app locking and hiding on supported iPhones. Locking requires Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode. Hiding a downloaded app removes it from the Home Screen and places it in the Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library.

Check the Hidden folder
- Swipe left through the Home Screen pages to open App Library.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Hidden.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode when prompted.
Apple says apps installed with iOS 18 or later cannot be hidden with this feature. A hidden app’s status applies only on that device and does not sync with iCloud.
Check other Apple locations
A hidden app may still appear in authenticated settings or account history. Apple identifies these places to check:

- Settings > Apps > Hidden Apps (authentication is required)
- Settings > Screen Time
- Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging
- The account’s App Store purchase history
These locations have different purposes: for example, purchase history reflects account activity and is not a live inventory of every app currently installed. Use the Hidden folder and settings to investigate the device’s current hidden-app feature.

If you are a parent or guardian
Apple says a parent or guardian in a Family Sharing group can see downloaded-app information and usage for a family member aged 13–17 and can restrict access using Screen Time. Eligibility ages vary by country or region. Children under 13 in a Family Sharing group cannot lock or hide apps using this feature; age thresholds also vary by country or region.

Review apps and access on Android
Android menus and app-discovery workflows vary by manufacturer, operating-system version, and device configuration. Start with the device’s installed-app list and review permissions for apps you do not recognize. Do not assume that one setting will expose every app or every hidden conversation.
Use Privacy Dashboard on Android 12 and later
Android 12 (API level 31) and later provide a Privacy Dashboard in system settings. It shows when apps accessed location, the microphone, and the camera recently. The exact route and labels can vary by device, so search Settings for “Privacy Dashboard” if it is not immediately visible.

Use the dashboard alongside the app list and each app’s permissions. Recent camera, microphone, or location access can help you assess whether an app used those features; it does not establish that the app contains hidden chats or that its use was improper.
Interpret app disclosures carefully
Google Play’s Data safety information is an app’s disclosure about data it collects and shares. It is not an independent audit and does not prove that an app behaves safely. Store availability can be useful, but it is not a guarantee: Meta reported in October 2022 that its security researchers had found more than 400 malicious Android and iOS apps that year designed to steal Facebook login information. Meta said some were disguised as ordinary utilities and that some had appeared in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store before removal. That is a dated company finding about credential-stealing apps, not a current prevalence estimate or a count of hidden-chat apps.

Check for hidden conversations inside a messaging app
A phone’s app inventory can establish whether an app is present or, in some cases, hidden by the operating system. It cannot show whether a conversation is archived, blocked, muted, or otherwise less visible within a service. Those controls differ between apps and may change over time.
If you are checking your own account or helping with permission, use the messaging service’s official documentation and review its privacy, archived-conversation, blocked-contact, notification, and account-security settings. Apple notes that some third-party app controls can only be managed within the app or on the developer’s website. There is no universal device setting that reveals every hidden conversation across services.
Choose checks that fit the question

Keep checks transparent and proportionate
If the device belongs to you, use its built-in settings and account controls. If you are a caregiver, an age-appropriate conversation and transparent parental controls are safer starting points than trying to secretly inspect someone’s device.

On supported Apple devices, software versions, and services, it can blur images or videos that appear to contain sensitive content and offer options such as contacting a trusted adult, leaving a conversation, or blocking a contact. Apple says analysis happens on the child’s device and it does not receive an indication when sensitive content is detected. Its coverage is limited to supported contexts.
Do not install a stealth surveillance app to inspect a partner, adult family member, or another person. Google Play prohibits apps that secretly monitor another individual by collecting and transmitting personal data, apart from tightly constrained parental or enterprise uses. For permitted monitoring apps, its policy requires disclosure, a persistent notification, and an identifying icon; such apps must not present themselves as secret surveillance.
