First decide what you want to change: settings for one browser—such as its search engine—or Android’s system-wide choice of browser for opening links. For an app preference, open that browser and tap its menu, then Settings. To change which browser opens links from other apps, open your phone’s Settings and look under Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app. Menu wording can vary by phone maker.
Choose the right settings menu
- Links from other apps open in the wrong browser: change Android’s Browser app default.
- You want to change a preference inside a browser: open that browser’s own settings. Search provider, homepage, cookies, site display, and browsing data are app-specific controls.
Changing Android’s default browser does not change the search engine used inside a browser. These are separate controls.
Change Android’s default browser
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps or Choose default apps. On some phones, this appears under a General heading.
- Tap Browser app.
- Select the browser you want Android to use for links.
This setting controls which browser Android uses to open tapped links. Google notes that menu wording can differ by manufacturer; if these labels do not match, look in Settings for similarly named Apps and Default apps controls. Google’s Android instructions for changing the default browser show the general route.
Find settings inside a specific browser
Google Chrome
Open Chrome, tap More, then Settings. To change its search provider, go to Basics > Search engine. Chrome’s search-engine instructions document this path.

For a site’s desktop or mobile display, open More > Settings > Site settings > Desktop site. The documented choices are Default view, Mobile site, and Desktop site. A site can have its own exception, and a page may need refreshing after you change the setting. See Chrome’s instructions for managing desktop mode on mobile.
Samsung Internet
Open Samsung Internet, tap its menu icon, then Settings. Samsung documents Homepage and Personal browsing data among the destinations in that menu. Its browser instructions for cache, cookies, and history describe these controls. Clearing browsing data can sign you out of websites, so consider that effect before deleting it.

Firefox for Android
Open Firefox, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings. Firefox’s default-browser control is also in Settings, but the steps for selecting it differ between Android 8 or 9 and newer Android versions. Follow the version-specific directions in Mozilla’s Firefox default-browser instructions.

Another installed browser
Open the browser and look for its menu, then Settings. The name and location of preferences vary by app; identify the browser before looking for controls such as search, homepage, cookies, or browsing data.

If the menu path does not match your phone
- For the default browser, search the phone’s Settings for Default apps or Browser app, or look under Apps.
- For an app preference, start in the browser itself rather than Android’s system Settings.
- Expect labels and locations to vary with the device maker, Android version, browser version, and the particular preference you are changing.
