A conversational workflow can make GitHub-hosted open-source apps easier to discover: describe what you need, review a short list of candidates, then choose whether to install one. A How-To Geek account published August 31, 2026, describes building this kind of interface with Claude Code and GitHub CLI. It gathers suggestions from several places and, in a Windows example, uses Winget to install a selected app. It is a discovery layer over existing sources—not a new app store or a guarantee that a recommendation is safe.
How the GitHub app-discovery workflow works
Instead of searching repositories and deciphering installation instructions one project at a time, a user describes a need in conversational terms—for example, a Windows alternative to Notion. In the reported example, the workflow returns a group of app cards. The account describes roughly 10–15 cards, with a name, short description, screenshot when available, and GitHub stars and forks.
The project details here come from a reproduced account of the How-To Geek article, rather than independent testing of the workflow. The account names AppFlowy, AFFiNE, and SiYuan among the example results; it does not establish that these are the best options for every Notion user or provide current repository counts.

The reported workflow combines three discovery inputs, then checks candidate projects against GitHub:

- Claude’s internal knowledge: supplies an initial set of possibilities, which the workflow checks for repository activity signals.
- AlternativeTo: contributes another list of alternatives.
- General web search: can surface articles and recommendations that add candidates.
These sources broaden discovery, but do not replace checking whether an app actually suits your needs. Stars and forks show community attention or activity in context; neither proves software quality, security, ongoing maintenance, or compatibility. Counts also change, so verify repository details directly rather than treating a card as a current endorsement.
What happens when you select an app
The reported installation flow has Claude inspect source code and current GitHub issues for suspicious signs before proceeding. The account explicitly cautions that this is not antivirus software or a formal security audit, and that the check can miss problems. Treat it as a limited review—not as evidence that an application is safe.

For its Windows example, the workflow runs a Winget installation command through PowerShell. If a user dismisses the UAC elevation prompt, the described flow detects that situation and offers two ways to continue. Once installation is complete, it supplies instructions for launching and uninstalling the app. These are details of the example, not a promise that every suggested project has a Winget package, installs successfully, or uses the same process.
Tools behind the described implementation
The account describes Claude Code working with GitHub CLI (gh). It says gh api retrieves repository data, including license information and issues, while a CLAUDE.md file holds recurring workflow instructions. AlternativeTo and ordinary web search provide additional discovery inputs; Winget is the package manager in the Windows installation example.

No implementation repository was identified in the available account, so these details explain the reported approach rather than provide a verified build guide or a project you can install. The workflow also does not change GitHub itself: it puts a more approachable conversational interface in front of repository and web information.

Use the generated list as a starting point, then make the decision based on evidence relevant to your use case. Open the project repository and check its license, recent development and issue history, supported operating systems, installation method, and how it handles your data. Compare the actual features you need—not just the app’s category or its popularity. If a repository does not clearly answer a question that matters to you, do not let a confident description substitute for that missing information.
