Open the Instagram video or Reel and look for its view count beside or below the content. To see performance details for your own post, open it and tap View Insights if that option appears. Instagram does not show the same counter on every photo or multi-item post, and a public view count is different from private Insights.
Where to find the public view count
Video posts
Instagram’s Help Center says a video’s view count appears below the video and is visible to anyone who can view the post. The guidance is specific to videos; it does not establish that every kind of Instagram post has a view counter. Instagram Help Center
Reels
Open the Reel and look for its public view count. If you own the Reel and want more than the public total, use its Insights control when available. Meta has described accessing Reels Insights while viewing Reels. Meta’s announcement of Reels features
How to open Insights for your own post

Open Instagram and go to the video or Reel you published.

Tap View Insights below the post, or open the post’s available Insights control.

Review the metrics shown for that content. Labels and availability can vary by format, account, and app version.

The post is a photo or a different format. Instagram’s Help Center guidance describes counts for video, not a universal counter for all static photos and posts.

The video is part of a multi-item post. The Help Center result says the described video count is not shown for a video shared in a post containing multiple photos and videos. That legacy guidance should not be extended to every current carousel or photo format.

You are looking for owner analytics, not a public count. The public counter and Insights are separate. Current third-party guidance distinguishes individual public video counts from the detailed Insights available to creator or business accounts, but the official material cited here does not confirm current eligibility rules. The control or label differs. If View Insights is not shown, the option may not be available for that post or account, or the interface may use a different path.

Views and watch time measure different things
A view count is a total of plays shown for the content; it is not the same as total or average watch time. Meta defines total Reels watch time as including replay time. Average watch time is watch time divided by total plays. These metrics can help explain viewing behavior, but neither tells you who watched the Reel. Meta’s explanation of Reels Insights

Do not treat older view-count rules as current
An older Instagram Help Center article describes video views appearing after November 19, 2015, and a view threshold of three seconds. Those are historical details in a legacy article, not verified current counting rules for every video or Reel, so they should not be used to interpret a present-day count.
