The “killer feature” is a Siri Remote finder: on a compatible iPhone, open the Apple TV Remote in Control Center and use its finder to get visual guidance toward a missing remote. Apple announced the feature with tvOS 17 in 2023 for Siri Remote (2nd generation or later). The eight-year framing comes from a writer’s retrospective on a 2017 wishlist; it does not establish that Apple added the feature because of that article.
How do I find my Siri Remote?

On your iPhone, open Control Center and open the Apple TV Remote.

Follow the on-screen circle. Apple says it grows as you get closer to the remote.

Apple’s announcement describes the finder as supporting Siri Remote (2nd generation or later). It specifies a visual proximity cue, not an audible alert or a particular detection distance or accuracy. Apple’s tvOS 17 announcement
Which remotes are compatible?
Apple’s June 5, 2023 announcement says the feature works with Siri Remote (2nd generation or later). If you cannot find the finder or your remote is an older model, check the remote generation and your Apple TV setup before considering a purchase. Apple’s current Apple TV 4K product page describes a USB-C Siri Remote with current configurations and says iPhone can help find a missing Siri Remote; that does not establish that buying a new Apple TV is necessary for every existing setup.

Why does the headline say it took eight years?
CNET writer Patrick Holland’s August 24, 2026 retrospective looks back at a wishlist he published in March 2017, titled “7 Ways Apple TV Can Get Better.” Holland says six of its seven requests were later addressed, including an Amazon video app, 4K support and improved TV control. He identifies remote finding, which arrived with tvOS 17 in 2023, as the last item fulfilled. The eight years are the retrospective’s rounded framing of those dates, not an exact day-to-day calculation.
The retrospective says the wishlist’s remaining request was an optical audio output, which Holland says Apple TV still lacked. It does not establish that Apple credited the wishlist or acted in response to it; the sources establish a sequence of events, not a cause. CNET’s retrospective, published via Yahoo Tech

Is this the same as asking Siri to find something?
No. The finder is a feature in the Apple TV Remote interface on iPhone that guides you toward the physical remote. Apple TV voice requests such as “What should I watch?” or “Play my music” are separate Siri capabilities, not remote-location commands. Apple Support: Use Siri on your Apple TV
