Final Fantasy XIV is playable on Nintendo Switch 2 in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, but its performance differs by mode. An August 2026 review reports an unlocked frame rate targeting 60 fps in handheld play, with fluctuations, while docked play tends to hover around 30 fps. Those are one reviewer’s observations, not a controlled benchmark or a guaranteed specification.

How well does FFXIV run on Switch 2?

The available performance evidence points to a capable portable version with compromises. Alejandro Castillo’s August 22, 2026 MeriStation review describes the image quality as solid, while noting reduced effects compared with the PS5 and PC versions. The review does not provide measured resolution, frame-time data, or a controlled comparison with other hardware, so it cannot establish a precise performance gap.

Castillo’s review used a Nintendo Switch 2 code provided by Ziran. Treat its performance descriptions as reviewer impressions, not official specifications.

Is FFXIV 60 fps on Switch 2?

Not consistently, according to the review. In handheld mode, Castillo says the default frame rate is unlocked, fluctuating toward a 60 fps target. In docked mode, the review says performance tends to hover around 30 fps and notes that the game offers a 30 fps cap. These observations do not establish that either mode maintains a particular frame rate in every area or duty.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Handheld: variable frame rate, with VRR

The reviewer found the fluctuations less noticeable on the Switch 2’s handheld display because of its variable refresh rate (VRR). The reported 60 fps is a target, not a locked result.

Docked: closer to 30 fps

Castillo describes docked performance as tending to hover around 30 fps. The in-game 30 fps cap is an option for players who prefer a capped frame rate; the review does not provide frame-time measurements to show how consistently it holds.

Does it run better handheld or docked?

The cited review is more favorable about handheld play: the reviewer praises the portable experience and says VRR makes frame-rate variation less noticeable. Docked play is described as closer to 30 fps. That makes handheld the more appealing mode based on this review’s impressions, but there is no standardized head-to-head test to establish a universal winner across different areas, duties, or play conditions.

How do the visuals and controls compare?

Castillo calls image quality solid but notes that effects are reduced compared with PS5 or PC. The review praises touch input, while saying mouse-mode cursor handling lacks precision and noting some stability rough edges. It does not provide a measured resolution or a detailed control comparison, so those assessments are qualitative.

Was the launch loading problem fixed?

Square Enix reported that certain transitions from fades to black took a prolonged time to load in instanced duties, especially when entering a duty surrounded by many characters. The company said processing optimizations addressed the issue during maintenance on August 7, 2026. This was a reported launch issue with a stated fix; the notice does not establish that it persists in the current build. Read Square Enix’s notice.

What should existing players know before switching?

Your character can carry over

Existing players can sign in with their Square Enix account and use the same character. Square Enix recommends using its Server Backup Function to carry over settings such as HUD layout, gear sets, and macros. If you do not back them up, you can configure them manually.
