To start Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, your service account must have Dawntrail registered for the platform you use, your character must have completed Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario, and you must have at least one level 90 Disciple of War or Magic. The opening quest is A New World to Explore, listed in the Old Sharlayan quest location. You do not need to level every job or complete optional raids and side quests.
Requirements at a glance
These are the gates that determine whether Dawntrail’s first main-scenario quest is available. The official Lodestone quest entries reviewed in Patch 7.56 provide the story and level conditions, while Square Enix’s expansion guidance covers registration.
| Requirement | What counts | What does not replace it |
|---|---|---|
| Dawntrail ownership | Dawntrail registered to the service account and platform on which you play | Owning Endwalker alone or having only a preorder bonus code |
| Story completion | Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario, including the quests leading through The Coming Dawn | Stopping at Endwalker’s original level-90 finale |
| Character level | At least one level 90 Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic | A level 90 crafter, gatherer, or limited job by itself |
| Starting quest | A New World to Explore | Looking for an expansion unlock in a different city or assuming it appears automatically |
The quest database pages displayed Patch 7.56 when checked on October 13, 2026. If a later patch changes the opening quest, location, or prerequisite, use the current Lodestone entry and the in-game journal as the final authority.

Endwalker ownership is not Dawntrail access
Endwalker grants access to its own content; it does not itself register Dawntrail. Square Enix’s guidance requires the Dawntrail product key to be registered to the service account before you can proceed into Dawntrail content. Buy or redeem the edition intended for the platform you actually use, then verify that the registration is attached to the same FINAL FANTASY XIV service account as your character.
#1 Best Overall
- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
The available evidence does not establish that a license transfers between platforms. Treat Windows, Steam, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox entitlements as platform-specific unless Square Enix explicitly states otherwise for your account. If you play on more than one platform, check the account-management page for each platform before assuming a purchase on one system covers another.
Platform-specific registration
| Platform | Registration procedure described by Square Enix | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Redeem the Dawntrail registration code on the appropriate Square Enix service account | Use the account that contains your characters and confirm the code is for the Windows edition |
| Steam | Redeem the Steam-compatible expansion registration code | Match the Steam version and the linked service account; do not assume a Windows code is interchangeable |
| Mac | Redeem the Mac expansion registration code | Confirm the Mac edition and the service account you sign into |
| PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 | A purchase of the full version automatically registers the expansion | Make the purchase while signed into the PlayStation account linked to the correct FINAL FANTASY XIV service account |
| Xbox Series X|S | A purchase of the full version automatically registers the expansion | Verify the Xbox account and FINAL FANTASY XIV service-account link before buying |
On Windows, Steam, and Mac, a preorder bonus code is separate from the full expansion registration code. Redeeming a preorder item does not replace registering Dawntrail itself. On PlayStation and Xbox, the automatic registration described by Square Enix applies to a purchase of the full version, not to a separate bonus entitlement.
How to confirm ownership before troubleshooting quests
- Sign in to the service account that contains the character you intend to play.
- Check the account’s registered products or platform entitlements and look specifically for Dawntrail, not merely Endwalker or a preorder reward.
- For a code-based purchase, confirm that the code was redeemed successfully and that it was issued for your platform edition.
- For PlayStation or Xbox, verify that the console account used for the purchase is the one linked to your FINAL FANTASY XIV service account.
- Only after the entitlement is visible should you investigate story or level conditions.
Complete Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario
The required story endpoint
Dawntrail does not begin immediately after the original Endwalker finale. The official Eorzea Database entry for A New World to Explore lists Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario as its prerequisite. In that sequence, The Coming Dawn is identified as the level-90 quest leading into the Dawntrail starting point.
In practical terms, continue the Endwalker quest line through its post-expansion chapters until the game marks that sequence complete. Reaching level 90 or defeating Endwalker’s base-game final encounter is not, by itself, proof that the Dawntrail prerequisite is satisfied.

What you do not have to finish
The documented gate is the main-scenario prerequisite. The reviewed sources do not identify optional raids, alliance raids, role quests, tribal quests, relic quests, crafting or gathering quest lines, or other side content as requirements for accepting A New World to Explore. Do not delay Dawntrail on the assumption that every Endwalker activity must be complete.
Side content can still be worthwhile for its rewards, lore, or unlocks, but it is separate from the entry condition unless a specific current quest description says otherwise. This distinction matters for returning players who completed the main story years ago but left optional content unfinished.
How to check your story status
- Open the main-scenario quest journal and identify the latest Endwalker post-expansion quest you completed.
- Look for The Coming Dawn or the quests immediately around it in the completed-quest history.
- If that sequence is incomplete, resume the marked main-scenario quest rather than searching for Dawntrail’s opening quest.
- After the sequence is complete, check the current database or in-game quest information for A New World to Explore and its listed location.
Reach level 90 on a combat job
One qualifying job is enough
The opening quest requires a level 90 job in the Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic categories. Square Enix describes the threshold as level 90 or above. You need one qualifying combat job on the character you will use; there is no stated requirement to level every job.
A level 90 tank, healer, melee or physical ranged damage dealer, or magical ranged damage dealer satisfies the job-category condition. The database requirement is about the job you are currently using, not an account-wide average level.

Jobs that do not satisfy the documented condition by themselves
Do not treat a level 90 Disciple of the Hand, Disciple of the Land, or limited job as a substitute for a level 90 Disciple of War or Magic. The official quest entries specify the combat-job categories and exclude limited jobs from that requirement. If your highest-level character is a crafter, gatherer, or limited job, switch to a qualifying combat job and raise it to level 90 before looking for the Dawntrail quest.
Verify the level on the correct character
- Log into the character that completed Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario.
- Open the Character or Classes and Jobs window and identify a Disciple of War or Magic at level 90 or higher.
- If the character has several jobs, confirm the level shown for the job you plan to use; another character’s level does not satisfy this character’s quest condition.
- Return to the main-scenario journal and check for the Dawntrail opening quest after both the story and registration requirements are complete.
Start “A New World to Explore”
Quest name and location
A New World to Explore is listed as the Dawntrail main-scenario opening quest. The Patch 7.56 database display places its quest location in Old Sharlayan and lists Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario as the prerequisite. Use the live in-game journal or the current Lodestone entry for the exact NPC marker and unlock state, because locations and quest presentation can change in later patches.
Once your account has Dawntrail registered, the post-Endwalker sequence is complete, and the character has a level 90 Disciple of War or Magic, travel to the location shown by the current quest entry and accept the quest. The expansion does not require a separate “unlock Dawntrail” item in addition to the main-scenario quest.
If the quest is missing
Check the gates in this order so that an account issue is not mistaken for a story issue:

- COLLECT SPECIAL ALT-BORDER CARDS—Each deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 2 alternate-border cards of rarity Rare or higher
- Entitlement: Dawntrail is registered to the same service account and platform you are using.
- Code type: On Windows, Steam, or Mac, the full registration code was redeemed; a preorder bonus code alone is insufficient.
- Story: Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario is complete, not just the original Endwalker finale.
- Job: The current character has a level 90 Disciple of War or Magic, rather than only a crafter, gatherer, or limited job.
- Quest data: The current in-game or Lodestone entry still names A New World to Explore and its location after any later patch changes.
If all four account, story, level, and quest-data checks match and the quest still does not appear, consult Square Enix support with the platform, service account, character name, and the exact prerequisite shown in the current database. Avoid purchasing another expansion or repeating optional content until the entitlement and prerequisite records have been verified.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to buy Dawntrail if you already own Endwalker?
Yes, if you want to enter Dawntrail content. Endwalker ownership establishes access to Endwalker, while Dawntrail must be registered separately for the platform and service account you use. The level and story requirements do not grant the expansion license; they only determine whether your character can begin its main scenario after the license is present.
Can you skip the earlier story?
Scenario-skip items are optional shortcuts
Square Enix offers optional Tales of Adventure scenario items that flag a corresponding title as complete and move a character to the start of a subsequent storyline. They are intended for players who explicitly want to bypass earlier narrative rather than for everyone starting Dawntrail.

What a skip does not change
A scenario-skip item is not a replacement for registering Dawntrail, and it does not remove the required level condition for the next main-scenario quest. Check the item’s eligibility rules, the exact storyline it completes, and its effects before purchase. If the item does not cover the specific Endwalker post-expansion sequence required by the current Dawntrail entry, you may still need to complete additional quests normally.
Players who care about story continuity should finish the quests themselves. Players who only need a character positioned for later content should compare the item’s stated completion point with the current prerequisite for A New World to Explore instead of assuming every scenario skip reaches the same point.
A final pre-Dawntrail checklist
- Dawntrail is registered, not merely preordered, on the platform where you will play.
- The registration is attached to the service account containing your intended character.
- Windows, Steam, or Mac users redeemed the full expansion code; PlayStation and Xbox users bought the full version through the linked console account.
- Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario is complete, including the sequence associated with The Coming Dawn.
- The character has at least one level 90 Disciple of War or Magic.
- You are checking for A New World to Explore in the Old Sharlayan location shown by the current quest data.
- You are not treating optional raids, role quests, crafting, gathering, or limited jobs as mandatory without a current quest description that says so.
Bottom line
Dawntrail’s entry test is straightforward: register the expansion for the correct platform and service account, finish Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario, and bring one level 90 Disciple of War or Magic. Then start A New World to Explore from the location listed in the current Lodestone or in-game quest entry. If the quest is absent, verify those three gates before repeating side content or buying anything else.
