For Final Fantasy XI on Windows, start with the resolution that best matches your monitor, then adjust the UI size for comfortable reading. Square Enix’s 2026 guide uses 1920 × 1080 as an example—not a universal recommendation—and says to choose the resolution that best matches your display. Set it in FINAL FANTASY XI Config before opening PlayOnline; the game does not let you change this Windows-client resolution from its in-game menus.
How to choose a resolution for your setup
Use your monitor and PC as the starting point rather than treating one resolution as best for every player. Square Enix’s 2026 starter guide demonstrates 1920 × 1080 and advises players to choose the resolution that best matches their display. That example is not a requirement, and the available sources do not establish a universally optimal resolution or compare performance across PCs.

- Display match: Prefer a resolution appropriate to the monitor you are using, following Square Enix’s guidance to match the display.
- Readability: Adjust UI size separately so menus and text are comfortable to read.
- Performance: If play is slow, consider the separate background and overlay graphics settings described below; results vary by hardware.
- Play-area shape: If the game area remains narrow on a widescreen monitor, check its separate background display screen-area setting.
Square Enix’s 2026 starter guide demonstrates Fullscreen and Borderless Window as display choices. Choose the one that suits how you use your PC; neither mode is presented as mandatory.

How to change the Windows client resolution
- Close the game if it is running.
- Open FINAL FANTASY XI Config before launching PlayOnline.
- Select a resolution appropriate to your monitor and PC. The official guide shows 1920 × 1080 as one example.
- Choose Fullscreen or Borderless Window if appropriate for your setup, then adjust UI size until menus and text are legible.
- Save or apply the configuration using the utility’s available controls, then launch PlayOnline.
Square Enix support says the Windows client’s resolution cannot be changed from inside the game, so make the resolution change in FINAL FANTASY XI Config before starting PlayOnline. Square Enix’s resolution FAQ also describes separate background and overlay graphics-resolution settings for higher resolutions.

Output resolution
This is the resolution configured for the Windows client in FINAL FANTASY XI Config. Choose it with your display in mind; 1920 × 1080 is an official example, not a one-size-fits-all target.
Background and overlay graphics
These settings control graphics detail separately from the client resolution. If performance is poor, Square Enix support suggests trying lower background and overlay resolutions. Its support guidance also identifies texture compression, on-screen maps, bump mapping, environmental animation, shadows, and weather effects as settings that may affect performance. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes; Square Enix says outcomes vary by hardware.

Background display screen area
A widescreen monitor does not by itself ensure that the in-game play area uses a widescreen shape. Square Enix’s anniversary feature points to Config → Misc. 2 → background display screen area and says its default is 4:3. If the play area appears constrained, check this setting as well as the Windows resolution utility. The 4:3 default reflects the game’s legacy display configuration; it is separate from the resolution selected in FINAL FANTASY XI Config.

If performance is poor after changing resolution
- Confirm that the client resolution is a sensible match for your monitor and PC.
- In FINAL FANTASY XI Config, try lowering the background and overlay resolutions separately, then see whether the change helps on your system.
- If needed, test the other support-listed options—texture compression, on-screen maps, bump mapping, environmental animation, shadows, and weather effects—one at a time so you can tell which change matters.
- If the play area is the problem rather than performance, inspect the in-game background display screen-area option under Config → Misc. 2.
Square Enix’s legacy support article says frame rate may increase when bump maps and environmental animations are disabled, but that is conditional guidance, not a promise for every PC. The same older article recommends at least 64 MB of texture memory for the higher-resolution settings it discusses. That figure is legacy documentation, not a current minimum system requirement, and should not be used to judge a modern PC.
