Early hands-on sessions suggest FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION could give the remake trilogy a distinctive finale. Reports from Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show point to a more detailed, colorful world; new exploration in Wutai; separate combat identities for Vincent and Cid; and a new FITS equipment system that changes how characters fight. Those impressions come from short preview demos, not the finished campaign, so the game’s complete quality and performance remain unproven.
What Final Fantasy VII Revelation is
Square Enix describes FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION as the final entry in its Final Fantasy VII Remake Series, following FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH. The publisher has announced an April 8, 2027 release date for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC. These are announced plans and could be revised before launch.
The game is still unreleased. As a result, the available evidence can show how the preview builds played and looked, but it cannot establish the final campaign’s length, consistency, technical performance, or review consensus.
Why the early preview looks promising
A richer world to explore
In a September 10, 2026 Gamescom preview, Creative Bloq’s Steve Boxer described the visuals as a continuation of the previous remake games with environments that appeared more detailed, crisp, and colorful. His roughly 50-minute session included a short exploration of Wutai’s capital, whose vertical layout and Japanese-inspired architecture gave the setting a strong visual identity.

The preview also presented exploration as more than a route between battles. Boxer reported wildlife photography activities and a world designed to reward looking around. That is an encouraging sign for players who want the finale to feel like a place to investigate rather than a sequence of cinematic corridors, although the session was too brief to show how deep those activities become.
Vincent and Cid play differently
PlayStation Blog’s September 17, 2026 Tokyo Game Show report included playable versions of Vincent and Cid. Vincent can switch between firearms and a monster form, giving him both ranged options and a transformation-based style. Cid fights with a spear and uses aerial attacks, pointing to a more mobile, close-range approach.
The distinction matters because the remake series relies heavily on switching characters during encounters. If the previewed differences carry into the full game, adding Vincent or Cid should change the decisions players make rather than simply replacing one weapon set with another.

FITS adds another layer of customization
The demo also introduced FITS, or Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear. The reported suit types were Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner, each granting different abilities. Cloud’s Summoner FITS could call summons into battle, while an additional command triggered a powerful attack at the cost of HP.
That health-for-power trade-off gives FITS an immediately understandable risk-and-reward element. The demonstrations do not yet establish how many suits the final game contains, how freely they can be changed, or how they interact with the broader progression system.
What the Tokyo Game Show demo showed
Whirlwind Maze traversal
The PlayStation Blog hands-on route went through the Whirlwind Maze, including movement across cliffs and ledges. This provides the clearest early example of traversal being integrated into an action sequence rather than treated only as a menu or map activity.

A Jenova Death boss fight
The demo culminated in a fight against Jenova Death. The encounter required players to respond to area-wide fire attacks and destroy tentacles shielding the boss’s main body. The reported party used Synergy Abilities and Limit Breaks to finish the battle, showing how coordinated team attacks remain central to the remake series’ combat design.
A single boss demo cannot predict the variety of the complete game, but it does show a fight built around identifying a protection mechanic, managing dangerous area attacks, and using the party’s strongest shared abilities at the right moment.
What the preview reaction actually proves
Boxer wrote that, after about 50 minutes with the Gamescom build, Revelation “easily passes muster when compared to the most recent and high-tech JRPGs.” That is his personal preview reaction, not a consensus score or a final review. Together with the Tokyo Game Show report, it supports a cautiously positive first impression: the game already has an appealing presentation and several systems that give the finale its own identity.

It does not answer questions about late-game pacing, story resolution, loading behavior, frame-rate targets, accessibility, or platform-by-platform performance. Those details require a finished release build.

Where newcomers should start
Square Enix’s store FAQ points newcomers toward FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, which it lists on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. That is the publisher’s suggested way to catch up, not a statement that either earlier game is mandatory for understanding Revelation.
Verdict for now
FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION has made a strong first impression because the previews show more than upgraded graphics. Wutai offers a visually distinctive area to explore, Vincent and Cid bring contrasting combat styles, FITS introduces a new build-defining system, and the Jenova Death encounter demonstrates layered boss mechanics. The sensible conclusion is “promising, but preliminary”: the evidence is limited to preview sessions, and the decisive judgment must wait for the finished game on April 8, 2027.
