You can start Final Fantasy VII Rebirth without playing Final Fantasy VII Remake. Rebirth is the second game in the remake project, but it is presented as a standalone entry for newcomers as well as returning players. Remake supplies useful context, and eligible save data can unlock optional bonuses, but neither is a requirement to begin.
For a smooth first playthrough, choose the combat style that feels natural, begin on a difficulty you can enjoy, learn to rotate between party members to build ATB, and treat exploration as optional rather than a checklist. Rebirth rewards curiosity, but it also lets you follow the main story whenever you want momentum.
Do you need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake first?
No. Rebirth continues the remake project, yet the official PlayStation guidance positions it for both newcomers and returning players. You may miss some emotional and historical context if you skip Remake, but you can still understand the immediate goals, meet the playable cast, and learn Rebirth’s systems from the game itself.

What Remake adds
- More background on the central characters and their relationships.
- Familiarity with the remake project’s terminology and combat rhythm.
- Additional context for story moments that deliberately continue earlier events.
If you have already played Remake, you will recognize the broader direction without needing to replay it immediately. If you have not, start Rebirth and use its opening hours to establish the basics before deciding whether you want the earlier chapter later. This avoids turning a prerequisite into a barrier.

Save-data bonuses are optional
Square Enix documents bonus items for players with save data from Remake, Remake Intergrade, or Episode INTERmission. These are extras rather than essential abilities or story gates. Start with the save data you have; do not postpone the game simply to obtain a bonus.
Pick a combat style and difficulty you can change later
At the beginning, Rebirth asks you to select a combat style and a difficulty. Square Enix documents Active and Classic styles, plus Easy, Normal, and Dynamic difficulty settings. The best starting choice is the one that lets you pay attention to enemy behavior and party commands instead of fighting the controls.
| Choice | Best fit | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Players who want direct, real-time control | Use it when you enjoy moving, attacking, guarding and issuing commands yourself. |
| Classic | Players who prefer to concentrate on commands and let more routine combat actions happen automatically | Use it if real-time input feels distracting; concentrate on selecting abilities, spells and tactical commands. |
| Easy | Story-first players or anyone learning the systems | Choose it when you want lower combat pressure while you learn ATB, materia and enemy reactions. |
| Normal | Players seeking the standard challenge | Begin here if you are comfortable experimenting with party roles and combat timing. |
| Dynamic | Players who want to try the game’s alternate challenge setting | Select it only if you are comfortable adapting as encounters test your setup; switch settings if the early fights stop being fun. |
You are not making a permanent commitment. If the first major encounters feel too demanding, lower the difficulty. If battles feel trivial after you understand ATB and enemy openings, try a higher setting. Changing the setting is a practical adjustment, not a failure.
Understand the combat loop before chasing advanced techniques
Rebirth’s combat is real-time, but winning consistently depends on making good use of commands and party rotation. The basic loop is:
- Control a character directly to build that character’s ATB.
- Spend ATB on an ability, spell or other command that suits the situation.
- Watch what the enemy is doing and look for chances to pressure or stagger it.
- Switch to another active character while the first one recovers or waits for a new opening.
- Repeat the cycle instead of leaving the whole party on one character.
Why direct control matters
AI-controlled party members fight competently, but Square Enix’s combat guidance makes an important distinction: “Left to their own devices, the other members of your party will fight competently, but if you want to fill their ATB quickly so you can use their Abilities, it’s best to take direct control.” In practice, briefly taking control of a different member is how you make that member’s command bar useful when you need it.

- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
You do not have to stay on one character until every command is spent. Switch when another member has the positioning tool, elemental option, healing command or available ATB that the current situation calls for. The goal is a responsive trio, not a single permanent avatar.
Pressure and stagger are opportunities, not button prompts to ignore
Enemies communicate when your attacks are working. Pay attention to their reactions and behavior, then use the appropriate ability or spell when an opening appears. Pressuring an enemy can create the opportunity to stagger it; a staggered target is the moment to concentrate your strongest available damage. If an enemy is attacking, reposition or defend rather than emptying every command immediately.
When you are unsure what to do, return to the simple sequence: build ATB, spend it with purpose, observe the enemy, and rotate. That habit is more valuable in the opening hours than memorizing every ability.
Build each active character around a job
Weapons and materia provide a broad range of abilities. Instead of leaving every character with an identical collection of materia, assign each active member a clear job for the current party. A complementary three-person group usually includes:
- Pressure or stagger specialist: someone equipped to exploit enemy openings and build toward a stagger.
- Reliable damage dealer: a character whose commands can keep damage flowing when an enemy is not vulnerable.
- Support or healer: a member able to sustain the group and answer status, recovery or defensive needs.
These are functional roles, not permanent identities. Change materia when a region, enemy type or side activity calls for a different answer. The important habit is knowing why each slot is equipped and which character you will control when that tool is needed.

Use low-risk fights to learn new options
When a new weapon ability, materia effect, Synergy Skill or Synergy Ability becomes available, test it in an ordinary encounter. Safe practice lets you learn its timing, range and ATB cost before a difficult fight demands it. Experimenting also prevents a common mistake: owning a powerful option but never becoming comfortable enough to select it quickly.
Use Synergy without waiting for a perfect moment
Synergy Abilities are cooperative attacks performed by party members. Some raise the party’s limit level, and additional abilities become available as party level and character affinity deepen. They are therefore both combat tools and a reason to vary your party combinations.
A practical Synergy routine
- Keep two or more complementary party combinations ready instead of relying on one trio for the entire game.
- Build ATB on the members involved in a Synergy option.
- Use the ability in a low-risk battle first so you recognize its activation and timing.
- Try different pairings as party level and affinity unlock more options.
Do not save every cooperative attack for an imaginary perfect encounter. Learning when an ability is available and how it changes the flow of a fight is part of progression. Conversely, do not interrupt a crucial heal or stagger attempt merely to trigger Synergy; use it when it supports the immediate plan.
Explore the regions without turning every icon into homework
Rebirth’s regions reward curiosity, and regional Intel provides structured discoveries and objectives. You do not need to clear every marker before advancing the main story. Use optional content to strengthen your understanding of the area and your party, not to impose a completion requirement on yourself.
When to explore
- Explore now when you are enjoying the landscape, want practice fights or see an Intel objective that complements your current party.
- Advance the story when you want narrative momentum, have spent enough time learning the current region or feel exploration is becoming repetitive.
- Return later when a challenge feels inconvenient rather than interesting; not every marker needs to be solved on first arrival.
Square Enix’s guidance gives First Strike materia in the Grasslands as an example of a useful regional discovery. First Strike starts battles with a partially filled ATB gauge, which can help you issue an opening command sooner. Treat discoveries like this as rewards for curiosity, not mandatory preparation.

The official advice is simple: “The final tip I want to give you is: take your time.” That does not mean moving slowly through every activity. It means allowing yourself to follow interest, then returning to the main route when you want the story to move.
Decide how much side content belongs in your first run
There is no single correct completion target. A first playthrough can focus on the main path, mix story chapters with nearby Intel, or pursue most optional activities as they appear. Choose deliberately rather than assuming every icon is required.
Main-story focus
Follow the marked route, complete only the optional tasks that teach a system or improve your current party, and leave the rest for later. This is the least demanding approach and keeps the narrative moving.
Balanced exploration
Clear nearby Intel while you are in a region, test new materia and complete side objectives that sound interesting. Move on when the activities stop teaching you something or begin to feel like chores.
Completionist approach
Work through most available regional objectives before advancing, while accepting that this will slow the story and require more party experimentation. Keep manual or separate save points if you want the freedom to resume the main path without retracing optional work.

Prepare controls before a long session
Rebirth is available on PC as well as PlayStation 5. Square Enix documents keyboard-and-mouse support on PC and allows controls to be customized separately for exploration, combat and minigames.
PC setup checklist
- Open the control settings before committing to a long session.
- Set exploration bindings, then separately set combat and minigame bindings; changes in one context do not automatically solve every other context.
- Confirm camera movement, dodge, guard and command shortcuts.
- Test those inputs in a safe area or an easy encounter.
- Adjust sensitivity or key placement if you repeatedly miss a command, dodge late or open the wrong menu.
On PlayStation 5, use the default layout first unless a particular input feels uncomfortable. The same principle applies: verify camera, dodge, guard and command access before a difficult encounter rather than learning them under pressure.
| Platform | Preparation priority | Good first check |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Comfort with the standard controller layout | Confirm movement, camera, guard, dodge and command-menu access in a safe fight. |
| PC | Separate bindings for exploration, combat and minigames | Test keyboard-and-mouse camera control and every combat shortcut before a long session. |
Avoid the mistakes that make the opening hours harder
Staying on one character
One character may feel familiar, but leaving the rest AI-controlled slows their ATB generation. Rotate deliberately so the member with the tool you need can build and spend ATB.
Spending every command immediately
ATB is more valuable when it answers a situation. Hold a charge briefly if an enemy is about to expose a weakness, if a healing window is approaching or if another character needs the next action.
Keeping one materia setup forever
Weapons and materia are your access to abilities. Revisit the setup when the party changes, a new region introduces different threats or you discover that a role has no reliable answer in the current fight.
Assuming every regional marker is mandatory
Intel is optional content. Explore because it is useful or enjoyable, not because advancing without clearing every icon is somehow a mistake.
Choosing difficulty for pride
Easy, Normal and Dynamic are tools for shaping your experience. If an early major encounter becomes a wall while you are still learning, change the setting and continue. You can focus on deeper mastery once the controls and party roles feel natural.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A low-stress plan for your first few hours
- Choose Active or Classic based on whether you prefer direct movement or more command-focused play.
- Select Easy, Normal or Dynamic according to the amount of combat pressure you want, knowing you can change it.
- During the first encounters, practice switching between all three active members.
- Build ATB, spend it on abilities or spells, and watch enemy behavior for pressure and stagger opportunities.
- Assign each active character a distinct role instead of duplicating every materia setup.
- Test a new Synergy option in a low-risk fight.
- Explore regional Intel while it is enjoyable; move on when you want story momentum.
- On PC, verify separate exploration, combat and minigame controls before an extended session.
This approach teaches the systems in the order they become useful: control comfort first, then ATB and rotation, then materia roles and Synergy, with optional exploration layered on top. It keeps the game approachable without flattening the strategic choices that make its party combat rewarding.
