Spoiler warning: This article discusses major story turns from the 1997 Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and the announced finale, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, including the Whispers, Sephiroth’s expanded role, and Aerith’s fate.
The remake project is not a scene-for-scene replacement of the 1997 game. It preserves the recognizable journey, characters, themes, and destinations, but makes prior knowledge part of the drama. Remake turns fate into an active antagonist, Rebirth makes Sephiroth far more present and keeps Aerith’s fate deliberately uncertain, and Revelation is intended to bring the wider Final Fantasy VII stories toward a shared conclusion. For returning players, the original remains a route map—but no longer a complete spoiler map.

What the remake trilogy is changing
Square Enix designed the project as a three-part trilogy rather than one enlarged retelling. The first game, Final Fantasy VII Remake, expands the original’s Midgar opening into a complete adventure. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth begins after the party escapes Midgar and follows the journey through the Forgotten Capital. The third and final game is officially titled Final Fantasy VII Revelation and is scheduled for Spring 2027.

| 1997 original | A single game covering Midgar, the world journey, the Forgotten Capital and the planet-wide endgame | The baseline storyline that established the characters, revelations and iconic outcomes |
| Final Fantasy VII Remake | Primarily Midgar, expanded to full-game scale | Introduces the Whispers and makes resistance to destiny part of the plot |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | From the escape from Midgar to the Forgotten Capital | Expands the world and supporting cast, while making Sephiroth the journey’s driving force |
| Final Fantasy VII Revelation | The remaining, planet-wide endgame | Designed to bring the accumulated Final Fantasy VII stories toward convergence; detailed plot outcomes remain unrevealed |
This structure changes pacing as much as plot. Places that were brief stops in 1997 can now support towns, side areas, conversations and independent character beats. The trilogy can preserve a familiar destination while changing what the destination means and how the party reaches it.

1. Fate becomes a character in the story
The original has no Whispers
The 1997 game does not contain the Whispers: mysterious entities that intervene when events appear to move away from an expected course. Their absence matters because the original presents its major turns as the unfolding of one established story. A player who remembers the script can anticipate many landmarks without the game itself questioning that certainty.
Remake makes inevitability visible
In Remake, the Whispers transform that background assumption into an on-screen conflict. Their interventions suggest that some force is trying to preserve a known sequence, while the heroes’ actions increasingly challenge it. The result is not simply a new monster category; it is a way to dramatize the tension between a remembered story and a future that might diverge from it.
The ending therefore changes the player’s position. Someone new to Final Fantasy VII sees an unresolved mystery. Someone who played the original recognizes the pressure being applied to familiar events and must ask whether recognition guarantees repetition. The game does not provide a simple, universally stated rule that explains every timeline or outcome, so claims about a fully separate alternate universe should be treated as interpretation rather than settled fact.
Why this matters in Rebirth
Rebirth uses the uncertainty established by the Whispers more broadly. Sephiroth, Zack, Aerith and the party’s understanding of reality all become connected to the question of which version of events is actually unfolding. The effect is deliberate: the original remains essential context, but it cannot be used as a guaranteed script for every scene ahead.
2. The route is familiar, but familiarity is no longer certainty
The trilogy retains enough of the original route for returning players to recognize its architecture. The party leaves Midgar, crosses a much larger world, builds relationships and reaches the Forgotten Capital. Those recognizable destinations are anchors, not promises that every intervening event or consequence will match 1997.
| Question | 1997 game | Remake trilogy |
|---|---|---|
| How much of the journey is covered at once? | Midgar and the rest of the adventure appear within one release | The story is divided across three planned releases, giving each region far more room |
| What does prior knowledge do? | It helps a returning player anticipate the established plot | It creates dramatic irony, then becomes a source of doubt because fate is contested |
| How are major locations used? | Some locations are compact steps in a long campaign | Locations can support expanded exploration, new buildings, side areas and additional character scenes |
| Is the ending of each section predictable? | The original’s sequence is fixed | Key motifs and destinations remain recognizable, but outcomes are intentionally less certain |
This is why calling the trilogy either a conventional remake or a completely unrelated sequel is misleading. It is a continuity-aware reimagining: faithful enough that the original’s scenes and themes remain legible, but altered so that the 1997 script cannot answer every question in advance.
3. Sephiroth changes from a distant mystery into Rebirth’s engine
His function in the original
In the comparable portion of the 1997 game, Sephiroth’s appearances are relatively sparse. His reputation, the evidence of his actions and the party’s pursuit of him create much of his presence. The villain can dominate the story while remaining physically distant, which helps preserve mystery.

His function in Rebirth
Producer Yoshinori Kitase described the difference directly: “In the original game, Sephiroth barely appeared during this section, but in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, he is the driving force that pulls the story along to fill that void.” That is a structural change, not merely a request for more dramatic cutscenes.
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
Rebirth makes Sephiroth an active pressure on the journey from the post-Midgar departure to the Forgotten Capital. His presence links the party’s travel, the mystery surrounding the planet and the trilogy’s questions about fate. Instead of waiting for the antagonist to reappear at isolated milestones, the player feels his influence across the whole middle chapter.
What returning players should expect
- Scenes involving Sephiroth carry more immediate narrative weight than their approximate counterparts in 1997.
- His increased visibility does not remove the mystery; it relocates the mystery to his motives, abilities and relationship to the altered course of events.
- Remembering his original role helps you identify the deliberate echoes, but it will not reliably predict how every encounter is framed or what it causes.
4. Aerith’s fate becomes an explicit thematic question
The original creates a fixed cultural memory
Aerith’s fate is one of the defining emotional events of the 1997 game. For players who know it, the journey toward the Forgotten Capital carries a unique kind of tension: the destination is familiar, and the possibility of change is emotionally loaded.
Rebirth emphasizes uncertainty rather than offering a simple promise
Kitase has called Aerith’s fate “one of the most important themes in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s story.” The remake presentation adds emotional detail around the characters and the event, making the question of what can be prevented, remembered or lost more central than a straightforward recreation would be.
The official discussion deliberately avoids promising a simple alternate outcome. The responsible reading is that Rebirth wants uncertainty itself to matter. The game invites players to compare what they remember with what they are seeing, without confirming that the original result has simply been erased or duplicated in another timeline.
Why this is more than a plot twist
Aerith’s fate connects three concerns that run through the trilogy: whether destiny can be resisted, whether memory is reliable and whether emotional meaning depends on an event occurring exactly as it did before. That is why the handling affects the entire project’s themes, not only one late-game sequence.
5. Character interiority is substantially expanded
The modern games have room to show thoughts and relationships that the 1997 game could communicate only through short text exchanges, expressive animation and the player’s imagination. Voice acting, longer conversations and additional emotional beats give the central cast more visible interior lives.
More time with the core party
Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII and the other party members can respond to travel, danger and one another over many more scenes. Their disagreements and alliances are not compressed into the shortest path between major battles. This does not replace the original characterizations; it makes their subtext more explicit and gives the trilogy more opportunities to change the emotional timing of familiar moments.

New named characters and expanded roles for existing figures help the world feel inhabited rather than arranged solely around the protagonist’s route. Some additions exist to support local stories or explain institutions that the original could sketch in a few lines. Others create new emotional contrasts for the main party. Their presence can alter the tone of a chapter even when the principal destination remains recognizable.

6. The world is rebuilt around original motifs
Nomura has explained that the team added named characters, buildings and areas such as Side Junon to make the modern, more detailed world believable while retaining recognizable motifs. The goal is not to discard the 1997 locations, but to give them enough physical and social context to support a contemporary explorable game.
What the expanded scale changes
- Settlements feel connected. Additional structures and residents show how communities function beyond the scenes required by the main plot.
- Travel becomes part of characterization. Time spent moving between destinations creates opportunities for conversations, conflict and humor that the original’s compact map could not sustain.
- Side spaces can carry narrative context. Optional areas may explain a faction, a local history or a character’s motivation without replacing the main route.
- Recognizable motifs gain new emphasis. A familiar location can look and function differently while still signaling its role in the larger story.
This expansion also changes pacing. A player expecting the original’s brisk transitions may find that the trilogy pauses to establish a place before asking the party to leave it. Those pauses are part of the remake’s argument that the world deserves to be experienced as a lived-in setting rather than a sequence of famous scenes.
7. The trilogy is reaching toward the wider Final Fantasy VII canon
The original game stands on its own. The remake project, by contrast, is being developed with the broader Final Fantasy VII compilation in view. Nomura has said the creators want the accumulated stories to converge in the final remake chapter.
That ambition explains why the trilogy can allude to material, characters or ideas associated with other entries without treating the 1997 game as the only valid reference point. It does not mean a newcomer must complete every spin-off before playing. It does mean that returning players may notice deliberate connections that were impossible in 1997, and that the final chapter may give those connections a larger structural role.
“Convergence” should not be read as a confirmed explanation of every apparent alternate reality. It is the developers’ stated direction for bringing the wider body of Final Fantasy VII stories together; the precise mechanics and final meanings remain unrevealed until the concluding game.
8. What is confirmed, and what remains interpretation
| Point | Status | What a careful reader can conclude |
|---|---|---|
| The project is a trilogy | Confirmed by producer Yoshinori Kitase in the 2022 announcement | Remake and Rebirth are not the complete project; Revelation is the planned final entry |
| Revelation release window | Officially announced for Spring 2027 | The endgame is planned, but detailed story and launch information can still change |
| Whispers differ from the original | Confirmed by the games themselves | Fate and resistance to it are explicit remake-trilogy subjects |
| Sephiroth’s expanded role in Rebirth | Confirmed by Kitase’s comparison with the original | His function is more active and structurally central in the second game |
| Aerith’s ultimate outcome | Intentionally not resolved by the cited developer comments | Uncertainty is a deliberate theme; a simple alternate-ending claim is not established |
| Multiple timelines or worlds | Interpretive framework rather than a fully stated explanation | Use it as a theory for analyzing clues, not as a settled summary of the finale |
9. Should you play the 1997 original first?
Play the original first if you want maximum contrast
The original is the best preparation for recognizing the trilogy’s reversals, omissions and echoes. You will understand why a location, line or character entrance feels significant, and you will experience the Whispers as a direct challenge to your expectations rather than as an unexplained supernatural element.
Start with the trilogy if you want discovery without historical context
New players can begin with Remake. Its expanded Midgar story supplies the necessary introductions, and the uncertainty is designed to work for people who do not know the 1997 plot. Starting there preserves the intended surprises, although you will miss some of the deliberate contrast that longtime players are meant to feel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a two-stage approach if you want both experiences
- Play Final Fantasy VII Remake without looking up plot explanations.
- Play the 1997 original before or during Rebirth if you want to identify the route’s major echoes and deviations.
- Continue to Rebirth with the expectation that the original is context, not a guaranteed forecast.
- Approach Revelation as the conclusion to the trilogy’s own questions about fate and convergence, rather than as a promise to reproduce every original scene.
Choose based on your tolerance for spoilers
- You want the original’s major revelations to remain unknown: start with Remake and avoid plot summaries.
- You want to understand every reference and reversal: play the 1997 game first.
- You mainly want modern presentation: the trilogy is self-contained enough to begin there, but accept that some mysteries are intentionally designed around the existence of the older story.
10. How the three games differ as reading experiences
| Reader experience | 1997 original | Remake trilogy |
|---|---|---|
| Pacing | One long adventure with compact transitions between major locations | Each installment can linger on a region, relationship or mystery |
| Certainty | The established sequence is the primary frame of reference | Recognition creates suspense because the sequence may be contested |
| Villain presentation | Sephiroth’s distance protects his mystique | Rebirth gives him sustained, active influence |
| Emotional texture | Strong themes conveyed through concise scenes and player inference | Voice acting, longer dialogue and additional beats make feelings more explicit |
| World scale | Memorable locations represented with the limits of 1997 hardware and structure | Expanded towns, buildings, side areas and supporting characters create a denser world |
| Canon relationship | The foundational continuity | A new continuity-aware version intended to connect with the wider compilation |
11. The trilogy’s commercial scale is not the same as its narrative purpose
Square Enix reported more than five million worldwide copies of Final Fantasy VII Remake at the 25th Anniversary announcement in 2022. A 2024 PlayStation Blog interview reported the later figure of more than seven million copies for Remake. These are company-reported sales milestones, not evidence that the remake follows the original more closely or that a particular interpretation of its plot is correct.
Rank #4
- All graphics fully remastered in HD, bringing the game to the latest console generation
- Renewed 3D models, including characters and backgrounds, enriching the visual experience
- Improved battle system providing a vastly smoother gameplay experience
- Fully voiced dialogue in both English and Japanese
- A newly arranged soundtrack from the original composer, Takeharu Ishimoto
For a catch-up route, the first game is also available as Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, while Rebirth continues the story outside Midgar. Square Enix has announced a “Remake Intergrade & Rebirth – Twin Pack”; availability and price are subject to change. The important story distinction is that the first entry establishes the fate conflict, and the second applies that uncertainty to the wider journey and its defining emotional questions.
12. Common misconceptions to avoid
“It is exactly the original with better graphics.”
No. The route, motifs and many character relationships are recognizable, but the Whispers, expanded Sephiroth role, altered pacing and deliberate uncertainty make the trilogy a different narrative construction.
“It is a completely unrelated sequel.”
That is also too simple. The trilogy depends on the original’s scenes, themes and player expectations. Its changes have meaning precisely because the earlier game exists as a point of comparison.

“Knowing the 1997 game spoils everything.”
It spoils some baseline information, but the remake project turns that knowledge into a source of suspense. You know the route; you do not necessarily know which details still govern the route.
“Aerith’s fate has already been conclusively rewritten.”
The available developer comments establish its importance and emotional uncertainty, not a final, simple replacement outcome. Treat definitive claims about the ultimate result as speculation until the trilogy is complete.
“Every spin-off is required homework.”
The trilogy is designed to be playable as its own project. Familiarity with the wider compilation may enrich references and theories, but the announced goal of convergence does not make every previous release a prerequisite.
Verdict: a faithful route with an intentionally unreliable destination
The most important story change is the role of player knowledge. The 1997 Final Fantasy VII gives you a landmark journey whose major turns become part of gaming culture. The remake trilogy keeps those landmarks visible, then asks whether memory is enough to determine what happens next.
Remake introduces that question through the Whispers. Rebirth broadens it through Sephiroth’s active presence, a denser world, expanded character relationships and Aerith’s fate. Revelation is positioned to resolve the trilogy’s larger promise of convergence, but its exact answers are still ahead. Play the original first for the richest contrast; start with Remake for a clean introduction. Either way, approach the trilogy as a reimagining that respects the old route without surrendering to it.
