FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS ended service on October 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT. You cannot create a new account, pull weapons, or continue progression now, so this is an archival guide rather than a current recommendation. It records the account-building logic that made sense while the game was active.
Historically, the safest first investment was not a universally “best” character. It was the character attached to your strongest useful five-star weapon, supported by a suitable costume, Overboost level, and elemental coverage. Build one dependable damage carry, add healing or sustain, then use the third slot for debuffs, resistance control, sigils, or a second damage type.
What the tier list means now
Ever Crisis launched on the App Store and Google Play on September 7, 2023, followed by Steam on December 6, 2023. Square Enix later announced that service would end on October 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT. Since the servers are closed, there are no active banners, new missions, refunds, downloads, or progression systems to evaluate. The rankings below explain how players historically made good investment decisions; they are not a way to improve a live account.

During service, a character’s position changed with the weapon kit available on that account. A character with a powerful five-star weapon, a useful costume bonus, high Overboost, the right element, and appropriate sigils could outperform a character placed higher on a generic list. Encounter mechanics also mattered: a boss could require a particular element, damage type, defense debuff, or sigil combination. That is why a fixed S-to-D ranking was less reliable than an account-specific build order.
How to judge a character before spending resources
Use the following questions together instead of judging a character’s name in isolation.
#1 Best Overall

| Comparison axis | What to check | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Role coverage | Damage, healing, mitigation, buffs, debuffs, or utility | A balanced party needed damage plus survival and encounter tools. |
| Weapon quality | The strongest five-star weapon you actually owned, including its skill effects | A nominally high-tier character without a usable weapon could contribute less than a lower-ranked character with a complete kit. |
| Overboost level | Current Overboost and the realistic cost of reaching the next useful breakpoint | Weapon upgrades often determined whether a build was merely adequate or worth concentrating on. |
| Costume bonuses | Whether an owned costume improved the intended role, element, or statistics | Costumes could change the value of an otherwise similar weapon setup. |
| Element access | Elements available at useful strength, not just listed in the roster | Elemental weaknesses could matter more than a general ranking in a specific fight. |
| Healing and mitigation | Reliable healing, regeneration, defensive buffs, or damage reduction | Survival frequently enabled more progress than a small increase in theoretical damage. |
| Debuffs and sigils | MDEF or MATK reduction, resistance manipulation, and required sigils | Utility could be mandatory for a boss and could free another party slot. |
| Resource requirement | Character-stream materials, weapon parts, and banner availability | A build that could not be completed with available resources was a poor practical target. |
Ever Crisis Info specifically warned that weapon Overboost and limited-banner availability could make a nominally high-tier weapon an impractical investment. A lower-rarity or more accessible option that you could finish was often the better account decision.
Historical build order for a new account
1. Establish one dependable damage carry
Start with the character for whom you have the best combination of five-star weapon, costume, Overboost progress, and elemental coverage. Do not spread rare materials across several half-built attackers. One reliable carry clears more content than three characters whose weapons are all underdeveloped.
Cloud was a common early damage anchor because many accounts could access a straightforward path to his weapon investment. In Square Enix’s 2025 anniversary campaign, players received 11 five-star copies of Cloud’s Umbral Blade. That unusually large one-time distribution made Cloud a historically accessible starting point for accounts that participated in the campaign. It did not make Cloud permanently superior in every encounter: the weapon’s element, the boss’s defenses, and the rest of the party still determined its usefulness.
When choosing between two possible carries, prefer the one that answers content you are actually attempting. A slightly weaker attacker with the required element or sigils can be more valuable than a stronger general-purpose attacker whose damage is resisted.

2. Add healing or sustain before chasing a second carry
Once your main attacker can deal consistent damage, add a healer or sustain weapon. Healing increases the number of mistakes a party can survive, keeps long fights stable, and often unlocks stages that a second damage dealer cannot clear reliably.
Aerith and Matt historically filled healing or sustain needs through different weapon kits. Select between them by the weapon effects and Overboost levels on your account rather than by a universal character order. If one has a dependable healing weapon and the other has only an incomplete offensive setup, the healer should receive the scarce upgrade materials first.

3. Fill the third slot with encounter utility
The final core slot should answer the content’s mechanics. Useful tools included attack or defense debuffs, elemental-resistance manipulation, sigil coverage, and a second damage type. A support character could increase the carry’s effective damage more than another unbuffed attacker, particularly when a boss had a high defense stat or a specific weakness.
Red XIII was a notable historical hybrid. The tier-list coverage described kits that could heal allies with regeneration while also applying MDEF and MATK debuffs. That combination let him contribute sustain and offensive utility in one slot. His value therefore depended heavily on whether the weapon supplying those effects was available and sufficiently Overboosted; the character name alone did not guarantee the package.
Use the third slot flexibly. If a boss requires a particular sigil, bring the character who can supply it even when that character ranks lower on a general list. If the fight is already safe but too slow, use a second damage type. If incoming damage is the problem, keep the support or hybrid instead.

Cloud, Aerith, Matt, and Red XIII: how to choose
| Character | Historical reason to build | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud | Common early damage anchor; the 2025 anniversary campaign distributed 11 five-star Umbral Blade copies to participating accounts. | Whether Umbral Blade and the rest of the weapon set provide the element, Overboost level, and costume synergy needed for your content. |
| Aerith | Healing or sustain option through her available weapon kits. | Whether the healing weapon is reliable at your current investment and whether the party needs direct healing or another form of sustain. |
| Matt | Another historical healing or sustain route, depending on the weapons owned. | Which of his available weapons can be raised efficiently and whether its effects match the encounter. |
| Red XIII | Hybrid potential: regeneration for allies combined with MDEF and MATK debuffs in the kits highlighted by contemporary tier-list coverage. | Whether you own the relevant weapon at a useful Overboost level and whether the fight benefits from both sustain and debuffs. |
This comparison is deliberately conditional. It does not establish that one of these four was always strongest. A character with no suitable weapon, no relevant costume, or an expensive limited-banner requirement could be a worse target than a less celebrated character whose complete kit was already in your inventory.
Weapon Overboost priorities
Overboost was one of the most important reasons a general tier list could mislead. The practical question was not “Is this weapon rated highly?” but “Can I raise this weapon far enough, with resources I can actually obtain, to improve the content I am playing?”
- Secure one dependable healing or sustain weapon. Use the option already available at useful strength; do not delay survivability while waiting for a theoretical perfect banner.
- Concentrate on one main elemental attacker. Choose the strongest weapon you own that covers an element or damage type needed by your near-term objectives.
- Raise support and debuff tools that answer the encounter. Prioritize MDEF or MATK reduction, resistance manipulation, sigils, or mitigation when those mechanics are blocking progress.
- Spend character-stream and weapon resources on the active core. Finish the carry, sustain option, and support package before widening the roster.
- Be cautious with limited weapons. Contemporary upgrade guidance noted that many limited weapons were not recommended unless they reached high Overboost levels. If you could not approach that investment, an accessible weapon with steady upgrades was usually safer.
Keep a written resource plan before upgrading. List the weapon’s current Overboost, the next material cost, the element or effect it supplies, and the stage where it will be used. If the upgrade improves no planned fight and delays your healer or carry, postpone it.

You have the anniversary Cloud weapon package
Use Cloud as the initial damage focus if Umbral Blade is your strongest practical weapon. Pair him with the most reliable healer or sustain option among Aerith, Matt, or Red XIII, then choose the third slot according to the boss: debuff support, sigils, resistance control, or a second damage type. Do not automatically invest in another physical attacker simply because Cloud is already built.

You have a healer but no standout attacker
Keep the healer at a stable investment level and direct the next major weapon resources into one elemental carry. Avoid splitting upgrades among every character who can equip an offensive weapon. The healer’s job is to make the carry’s attempts repeatable while you assemble the required element.
You have several attackers but repeated party wipes
Stop adding damage and inspect sustain. Replace the least useful attacker with a healing, regeneration, mitigation, or debuff option. Red XIII’s hybrid package was historically valuable in this situation when the relevant weapon was strong enough, because one slot could provide both regeneration and defensive or offensive debuffs.
The boss requires a specific sigil or element
Build around the requirement first. A character who supplies the needed sigil or elemental damage belongs in the party even if a generic tier list places them lower. Then select the best available healer and use the remaining slot for damage or debuff coverage.
Mistakes that made historical accounts weaker
- Following a universal ranking literally: rankings could not account for your weapon inventory, costume bonuses, Overboost, or the next boss.
- Building every character evenly: shallow investment left the account without a finished carry or stable healer.
- Ignoring weapon effects: a character’s role came from the equipped kit, not merely the character label.
- Chasing limited weapons without a completion plan: an unboosted limited weapon could consume resources without delivering its intended performance.
- Using a second damage dealer to solve a survival problem: healing, regeneration, mitigation, or a useful debuff often addressed the real bottleneck.
- Ignoring encounter mechanics: element, sigil, resistance, and defense checks could outweigh a small difference in raw statistics.
Why the historical recommendations ended
Square Enix’s producer, Shoichi Ichikawa, explained that although many people were playing Ever Crisis, balancing production costs against demand for character weapons and gear had become difficult. The subsequent end-of-service notice confirmed that the game would close on the date stated above. Those statements explain why this guide should be read as a record of historical decision-making, not as a promise of future banners or a current progression route.
The enduring lesson is the account-specific method: identify the best weapon you already have, assign one character to damage, secure sustain, and reserve the final slot for the mechanics of the fight. That approach was more durable than any static letter grade and remains the clearest way to understand why players made different “best” choices on otherwise similar accounts.
