For most new players, choose Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster. It preserves the 1994 game’s story while improving the pixel presentation, interface, soundtrack options, and pacing controls. Choose the original SNES release instead if you specifically want the historical 1994 presentation and ruleset, or if you are evaluating a particular later port whose added content is not included in the Pixel Remaster.
The short answer: Pixel Remaster for convenience, SNES for historical authenticity
Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is not a new story or a remake that rewrites the game. Square Enix describes it as a remastered edition based on the 1994 original, with the story left unchanged. The practical choice is therefore between two presentations of the same role-playing adventure: a modernized release with optional quality-of-life tools, and the original Super Nintendo/Nintendo version with its period-specific graphics, audio, interface, and pacing.
That distinction matters because “the original” can mean different things. The 1994 Nintendo/Super Nintendo release is the foundation for the Pixel Remaster, while later ports and remakes may contain features that Square Enix did not carry over. If you remember a feature from a specific legacy release, identify that release rather than assuming every older version is equivalent.

| Story | Same story; Square Enix says no story changes were made. | The original 1994 scenario and script presentation. |
| Visuals | Most graphics redrawn in updated 2D pixel art; playable character sprites redrawn by Kazuko Shibuya. | Original Super Nintendo-era pixel graphics. |

| Interface and pacing | Modernized interface, auto-battle, encounter controls, and adjustable experience options, depending on platform and update. | Original interface and fixed pacing. |
| Extra reference tools | Bestiary, illustration gallery, and music player. | Original release does not provide the Pixel Remaster’s built-in gallery and player. |
| Port-specific additions | Not every feature from later ports and remakes is included. | Depends on the exact cartridge, translation, or later edition being discussed. |
Square Enix’s own explanation is the safest guide to scope: the Pixel Remaster is based on the original 1994 game, has unique features, and does not totally carry over features from other ports and remakes. Read that qualification before treating the Pixel Remaster as a definitive compilation of every historical release (Square Enix support explanation).

Graphics: a redraw rather than a filter
What changes in the Pixel Remaster
The Pixel Remaster redraws most of the game’s graphics in an updated 2D pixel-art style. Playable character sprites were redrawn by Kazuko Shibuya, whose work is associated with the original series’ character presentation. The result is cleaner and more uniform on modern displays than simply enlarging the 1994 image.
This is still recognizably Final Fantasy VI: the world map, towns, dungeons, battles, effects, and character designs retain the game’s pixel-art identity. The redraw changes proportions, color treatment, and fine details enough that screenshots can look different even when the underlying scene is the same. Players who want the exact visual limitations and quirks of a Super Nintendo release should select the original; players who want the same art direction with more legibility should select the remaster.
Fonts and presentation controls
Steam received a pixel-font option alongside its later update, allowing players who dislike the default modern type treatment to move closer to an older look. The official PS4 and Switch launch information also describes font switching. These controls do not turn the remaster into a byte-for-byte recreation, but they let you tune one of the most noticeable presentation differences.

Audio: new arrangements with an escape hatch for the original score
The Pixel Remaster soundtrack was newly arranged under the full oversight of original composer Nobuo Uematsu, according to Square Enix’s series FAQ (Square Enix Pixel Remaster FAQ). The arrangements give orchestration, balance, and individual instruments a contemporary treatment while preserving the melodies and dramatic structure that define the game.
On supported editions, a music switch lets you choose the rearranged tracks or the original BGM. Steam documents an original-BGM option, and Square Enix’s PS4/Switch launch announcement describes soundtrack switching for those console releases (PS4 and Switch launch announcement). If the 1994 sound is the reason you are hesitant about the remaster, check that your platform exposes the switch and use the original setting; if you want a refreshed interpretation, leave the new arrangements enabled.

The SNES version remains the reference point for the original hardware sound. Its appeal is not technical fidelity to a modern recording but the specific synthesized balance, timing, and limitations of that release.
Convenience and pacing: where the remaster pulls furthest ahead
Encounter controls
A January 31, 2024 update added encounter on/off controls to Steam and mobile. Turning encounters off is useful when you are retracing an area, solving a puzzle, or testing a route without interruption. Leaving them on preserves the normal rhythm of exploration and leveling. The option is not a permanent difficulty setting; it is a player-controlled pacing tool, so use it deliberately if you want your character’s level to reflect ordinary play.

Experience and ability multipliers
The same update added an experience multiplier from 0 to 4 on Steam and mobile. Steam’s store information also lists a magic AP multiplier from 0 to 4. A value of 0 prevents those rewards, while higher values accelerate progression; use the lowest setting that solves your specific problem rather than assuming the maximum is automatically better. Nintendo’s listing describes experience multipliers, but the exact controls can differ by platform and software version.
These settings make the remaster adaptable to several play styles:
- Keep the default progression if you want a conventional first playthrough.
- Use a lower or zero encounter setting while exploring familiar terrain, then restore encounters before you need normal leveling.
- Increase experience or AP only when you want to reduce repetitive battles, catch up an underused character, or fit the game into a shorter schedule.
The SNES original does not offer these modern sliders and switches. Its pacing is part of the historical experience: exploration, battles, and progression occur at the rates designed for the 1994 release.

Auto-battle and interface changes
The remaster includes auto-battle and a modernized interface. Auto-battle can repeat commands during routine fights, reducing menu work when enemies are no longer a meaningful threat. The updated interface is designed for contemporary screens and controllers, with clearer navigation than the original release. These changes save time without changing the narrative or requiring a different combat system.

The Pixel Remaster includes a bestiary, illustration gallery, and music player. The bestiary gives you an in-game reference for encountered enemies; the gallery collects artwork for browsing; and the music player lets you revisit tracks outside the story. They are especially useful if you plan to complete the game, study its art direction, or use it as a soundtrack library.
These additions are separate from the adventure itself. You can ignore them and play from beginning to end, or use them as reference tools when returning to an area. The 1994 SNES release’s appeal is its unadorned original package, so the absence of these menus may be a virtue if you want no supplementary interface.
Why the exact legacy port matters
There is no single “original” version that covers every release history question. Square Enix explicitly says the Pixel Remaster does not totally carry over features from other ports and remakes. A comparison with the 1994 SNES game is therefore different from a comparison with any later edition that changed content, presentation, or included additional systems.

- Identify the platform and release year of the older copy.
- Note any feature that is decisive for you, such as a particular presentation option, added content, or interface behavior.
- Check Square Enix’s description of the Pixel Remaster against that feature; do not infer inclusion merely because the feature appeared in another port.
- If the feature is essential and the official description does not confirm it, keep the legacy release or choose it instead of assuming the remaster is a complete substitute.
This is the main reason a blanket “remaster versus original” verdict can mislead. For the 1994 game itself, the remaster is a polished modernization. For a later port with unique additions, it may be a different trade-off.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should choose the Pixel Remaster?
Choose it if you are playing for the first time
The remaster removes avoidable friction without altering the story. Clearer menus, auto-battle, optional encounter control, and adjustable progression let a new player spend more attention on exploration, characters, and battles that matter. The bestiary, gallery, and music player also make it easier to understand the game as a complete work without consulting separate material.
Choose it if you want adjustable pacing
If your available time changes from session to session, the remaster can accommodate it. You can use standard rates for a normal run, suppress interruptions while navigating, or accelerate experience and AP when repetition becomes a barrier. Because these adjustments are optional, they do not force a faster or easier game on players who prefer the intended pace.
Choose it if you want refreshed presentation
The redrawn pixel art and new arrangements present the same scenes and melodies with a contemporary finish. Font and music switches on supported editions provide some control over how far you move toward the older look and sound.

Who should choose the 1994 SNES version?
Choose it for an exact period experience
The original is the right choice when the goal is to experience the 1994 graphics, sound, interface, and progression as they were released. Its limitations are not missing features to be corrected; they are part of the historical object you want to study or revisit.
Choose it when a remembered port-specific feature is essential
If your preferred edition is not the SNES release but another legacy port, first confirm that the feature you value exists in the Pixel Remaster. Square Enix’s qualification about later ports means the remaster should not automatically replace every older version.
Choose it for a fixed, self-contained ruleset
Some players prefer not to make decisions about encounter suppression or reward multipliers. The SNES version supplies one unchanging progression model, which can make a replay feel more consistent and easier to compare with historical guides or personal memories.
A practical setup for a first Pixel Remaster playthrough
- Pick a platform with the controls you value. Steam documents the broadest set of adjustable progression options in the supplied listings; Switch and PS4 are convenient console choices; mobile adds gamepad support after its update.
- Start with normal rewards. Leave encounters and multipliers at their standard behavior until you know whether the game’s pacing suits you.
- Choose your presentation. Select the rearranged soundtrack for the remaster’s new interpretation, or select original BGM where your edition provides it. Pick the pixel-font option if the default type feels too modern.
- Use auto-battle selectively. Let it handle routine encounters, but issue commands manually when an enemy requires a specific strategy.
- Adjust only a specific problem. Turn encounters off for backtracking, or raise EXP/AP when you are intentionally shortening repetition. Restore your preferred settings afterward so the rest of the adventure follows your chosen pace.
- Use the extras as reference, not homework. The bestiary, gallery, and music player are available whenever you want them; none is required to finish the story.
Decision guide by priority
| Your priority | Recommended version | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First playthrough with minimal friction | Pixel Remaster | Modern interface, auto-battle, optional encounter and progression controls. |
| Exact 1994 presentation | SNES/Nintendo original | Preserves the original graphics, sound, interface, and pacing. |
| New art and soundtrack arrangements | Pixel Remaster | Updated pixel art and Uematsu-supervised arrangements. |
| Original music with modern conveniences | Pixel Remaster on a supported edition | Original-BGM selection is documented for supported platforms, including Steam and the PS4/Switch feature set. |
| A feature unique to a later port | Verify that port first | The Pixel Remaster does not carry over every later-port or remake feature. |
| One fixed progression model | SNES/Nintendo original | No modern encounter or reward multipliers to configure. |
Bottom line
Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is the best default recommendation because it keeps the 1994 story while making the game easier to read, operate, and pace on current hardware. Its optional controls mean you can preserve a traditional playthrough or remove repetition when needed. The SNES original remains the better choice for historical authenticity, and a specific later port may still be preferable when it contains content the remaster does not include.
