Play Final Fantasy Tactics Advance first if you want the cleanest introduction to this handheld tactical-RPG branch. It is the earlier release and establishes the context that Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift follows. Start with A2 instead only if you specifically want the later Nintendo DS entry and are comfortable beginning with a sequel.

The short answer

Question Start with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Start with Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Which gives the intended series order? Yes. It is the earlier game. No. It follows Advance as the sequel.
Which is the safer first story experience? Advance, because it supplies the earlier setting and framework. A2, only if release order is less important to you than reaching the later entry immediately.
Will the tactical systems feel unrelated? No. You begin with the foundation. No. A2 carries forward the broad grid-combat, job-system and battle-law ideas associated with Advance.
Who should choose it first? Players who want chronology, context or a traditional starting point. Players who already have access to the DS game or specifically prefer its era and hardware.
Main trade-off You begin with the older handheld release. You get the later sequel experience but lose the release-order introduction.

Neither game is established as objectively better by the available evidence. Claims about superior story, lower difficulty, longer campaigns or more missions are preference judgments unless supported by comparable data. The practical choice is therefore about order, hardware and the kind of first experience you want.

How the two games fit together

Advance is the starting point in release order

Nintendo’s official product information places Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on Game Boy Advance, with a European release date of 24 October 2003. A series overview identifies it as the earlier title in this handheld line. That makes it the natural first stop for anyone who wants to see the branch develop in sequence.

Starting with the first release lets you encounter the shared ideas before seeing how a later game carries them forward. You do not have to treat that order as a rule, but it is the least complicated way to understand references to the earlier design and to notice what A2 changes or retains.

A2 is the Nintendo DS sequel

Nintendo’s official page identifies Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift as a Nintendo DS title from 2007. The series relationship is described as a sequel following Advance. “Sequel” establishes its place in the series, but the cited material does not document how tightly the two plots connect scene by scene or whether every character and setting element carries over. It is safest to think of A2 as a later entry in the same tactical branch rather than assume that it is either a completely independent story or a chapter that requires detailed knowledge of Advance.

What that means for a first-time player

Advance first is the context-first route. A2 first is the later-entry route. If you care about understanding the lineage of the systems and experiencing the games in the order players originally received them, choose Advance. If your immediate goal is simply to play the DS sequel, beginning with A2 is defensible; you are changing the order, not making the games unplayable.

Hardware, editions and access

What each original release requires

The original Advance release is a Game Boy Advance game. The original A2 release is a Nintendo DS game. Those labels matter because these are legacy cartridge products rather than current releases designed for modern consoles. Your first decision may therefore be determined by which compatible hardware you already own.

Use the original cartridge with hardware that supports that cartridge format, and verify the exact model before buying. Compatibility can vary across later hardware revisions, regional versions and modern legacy solutions; the supplied product information does not establish a universal compatibility list. If you are relying on a replacement device, emulator or digital storefront, confirm that the particular version legally and technically supports the title before paying.

Choosing based on the system you have

  • Own compatible Game Boy Advance hardware? Advance is the straightforward first purchase because it matches the earlier game and the intended order.
  • Own compatible Nintendo DS hardware but not a GBA setup? A2 may be the easier game to start with physically, provided you accept beginning with the sequel.
  • Own neither system? Decide on the order first, then price the required hardware and cartridge together. Buying one game without confirming the hardware can leave you with an unusable copy.
  • Plan to play both? Check cartridge compatibility for each system before buying either one. Do not assume that a device supporting one format automatically supports the other.

What to check when buying a legacy cartridge

Current inventory, authenticity, region and price change frequently, and no current stock or price was verified for this comparison. Treat every listing as a purchase that needs inspection rather than assuming that a product photo or title alone proves what is being sold.

  1. Confirm the exact title. Search for the full names “Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Game Boy Advance” or “Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift Nintendo DS.” Abbreviations can mix the two games or surface unrelated listings.
  2. Check the platform in the listing. A seller should state Game Boy Advance for Advance and Nintendo DS for A2. If the platform is missing, ask before ordering.
  3. Verify region. Cartridge labeling, language, packaging and hardware compatibility can differ by region. Make sure the seller identifies the region and that it matches your equipment and expectations.
  4. Inspect authenticity signals. Look for clear photographs of the front label, cartridge shell, contacts and any included packaging. Blurry images, generic descriptions, stock photos or unusually low prices justify extra caution.
  5. Read the return policy. A return window is valuable if the cartridge is counterfeit, damaged, mislabeled or incompatible with your hardware.
  6. Compare the complete cost. Include shipping, taxes, required hardware and any adapter or replacement battery service. A cheap cartridge can become the expensive option if it requires equipment you do not own.

How the gameplay foundation carries over

Grid-based turn combat

Both games belong to the handheld tactical-RPG branch and use grid-based, turn-based combat. Battles are organized around movement and actions on a tiled field rather than real-time inputs. That shared structure means that learning to read a tactical map, plan a turn and account for positioning in one game gives you a useful conceptual start in the other.

The shared description does not establish that every combat rule, interface element or balance decision is identical. Treat the systems as related rather than interchangeable. A player moving from Advance to A2 should expect familiar fundamentals alongside rules that may need to be learned again.

Job systems

A job system lets the player organize characters around defined combat or support roles and develop their abilities through those roles. Because A2 is documented as carrying over the job-system concept associated with Advance, experience with the earlier game can make the vocabulary and overall planning approach easier to recognize.

That continuity is not proof that the two games use the same job list, progression requirements or optimal combinations. Do not choose a starting game on the assumption that a favorite job, ability or build will appear unchanged. The available evidence supports continuity of the broad system, not a complete feature-by-feature identity.

Battle-law restrictions

Both titles are associated with battle laws: restrictions that shape what is permitted or penalized during a fight. These rules are part of the tactical framework carried from Advance into A2. They can affect how you plan a battle because success is not only about defeating opponents; it also involves operating within the encounter’s stated restrictions.

The cited material does not provide a definitive list of law effects or explain whether the consequences are easier, harsher or more varied in either game. If law management is the feature that interests you most, select based on release order or hardware access rather than an unsupported claim that one implementation is superior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What transfers from one game to the other

  • Transfers well: the idea of turn-based movement on a grid, assigning characters to jobs and checking battle restrictions before committing to a plan.
  • May need relearning: the exact jobs, abilities, progression rules, law details, menus and balance of the sequel.
  • Does not transfer automatically: story knowledge, character relationships or any assumption that a specific tactic works identically in both releases.

Which is better for different priorities?

If story context matters most

Choose Advance first. It is the earlier title, and A2 is identified as its sequel. That order gives you the clearest historical and narrative context available from the documented relationship. Because detailed plot dependencies are not established here, this is a recommendation for context and chronology, not a claim that A2 is inaccessible without Advance.

If you want the later handheld entry immediately

Choose A2 first. The fact that it is a sequel does not by itself make it a bad starting point for a player whose priority is the Nintendo DS release. You will encounter the later presentation and the inherited tactical concepts immediately, then decide whether the earlier game is worth visiting afterward.

If you want to learn the shared systems gradually

Choose Advance first. Starting with the earlier implementation gives you a baseline for judging how the sequel handles grid combat, jobs and laws. The benefit is comparative understanding, not a guarantee that the first game is easier or that the second game is more complex.

If you are deciding on difficulty

There is no reliable, directly comparable difficulty measurement established for these two titles in the available material. Avoid choosing on the promise that one is definitively easier. Difficulty can also depend on how familiar you are with tactical RPGs, which jobs you select and how carefully you follow battle laws.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are deciding on content or length

Comparable figures for mission totals and playtime are not established here, so “more content” is not a safe basis for the decision. A2’s later release date does not prove that it has a longer campaign, and Advance’s earlier position does not prove that it is shorter. Use release order, hardware and personal interest unless you have a separate, trustworthy comparison for those metrics.

If you care about review scores

No review-average comparison is provided that would support a defensible winner. Scores also vary by publication, region and date. A headline claiming that one game is universally better would go beyond the evidence available for this matchup.

Do you need to play Advance before Grimoire of the Rift?

No mandatory gameplay prerequisite is established. A2 can be selected first when the later DS entry is your priority. Its shared tactical framework means that the games are connected mechanically, but the documented sequel relationship does not show that you must complete Advance to understand every event in A2.

There is still a reason to play Advance first: it preserves release order and lets you recognize the foundation before seeing the sequel’s version of it. If you dislike starting a series with a later chapter, choose Advance. If you are more interested in the DS game and accept that some context may arrive in sequel form, choose A2.

Three sensible play-order plans

Plan 1: Release-order playthrough

  1. Obtain a verified copy of Advance and compatible Game Boy Advance hardware.
  2. Play Advance as the introduction to the handheld tactical branch.
  3. Afterward, obtain A2 and approach it as the sequel, noting which broad systems continue and which details differ.

This is the best plan for chronology, context and comparison. It does not claim that Advance has a superior story or difficulty; it simply follows the documented order.

Plan 2: DS-first playthrough

  1. Confirm that you have compatible Nintendo DS hardware and an authentic A2 cartridge.
  2. Play A2 without treating Advance as required homework.
  3. Return to Advance later if you want to see the earlier foundation or compare the inherited systems directly.

This plan suits a reader whose available hardware or immediate interest points to the later entry. The cost is only that your first exposure is not the series’ release-order starting point.

Plan 3: Hardware-led decision

  1. List the original hardware you already own and verify that it supports the cartridge format you intend to buy.
  2. Choose the matching game if you want to avoid purchasing another system before playing.
  3. If you later acquire the other platform, use the second game to explore the sequel relationship and system continuity.

This is the most practical route when access matters more than chronology. It prevents a theoretical “correct” order from becoming an unnecessary hardware purchase.

A decision checklist before you buy

  • Do you want release order and the earlier foundation? Choose Advance.
  • Do you specifically want the later Nintendo DS sequel? Choose A2.
  • Do you already own compatible hardware for only one cartridge format? Start with the game that matches it, after verifying compatibility.
  • Are you expecting a proven winner for story, difficulty, mission count or playtime? The available evidence does not establish one.
  • Are you buying used? Confirm title, platform, region, authenticity, condition, return terms and total delivered cost.
  • Do you intend to play both? Starting with Advance gives the clearest chronological comparison, while starting with A2 is still a valid preference-led choice.

The default recommendation remains Advance first because it is the earlier release and the sequel’s documented predecessor. A2 first is a reasonable alternative when the Nintendo DS entry, your existing hardware or your personal interest outweighs the value of release order.
