Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster keeps the stories of the six NES- and Super NES-era games intact, but rebuilds their presentation and play flow for modern hardware. The sprites were redrawn, music was rearranged, menus were redesigned, and conveniences such as auto-battle, encounter controls and experience multipliers were added. It is best understood as a coordinated modernization of the original releases—not a package containing every feature from the GBA, PSP, WonderSwan or 3D remakes.
What Pixel Remaster is—and what it is not
The Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster series starts from the original Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo versions of the six games. Square Enix says the remasters preserve the original feel while updating the presentation for high-resolution displays. Its FAQ also states plainly: “No changes have been made to the stories.”
That distinction matters when choosing a version. “Remaster” here does not mean every previous port has been merged into one definitive edition. Earlier releases added optional dungeons, bosses, classes, items, scenes and other material in different combinations. Pixel Remaster uses the original-release baseline instead, then adds a new set of presentation and convenience features of its own. Some additions from previous remakes are therefore absent.
The practical result is a consistent edition across Final Fantasy I, II, III, IV, V and VI. You get newly presented graphics, a new audio mix, a common interface and modern quality-of-life controls, while the underlying stories remain the same as in the NES/SNES-era games.

Graphics: familiar pixel art rebuilt for modern screens
Redrawn sprites, not a simple upscale
Pixel Remaster does not merely enlarge the original sprites. Playable characters were redrawn by Kazuko Shibuya, whose work on the earlier games helped define their visual identity. Square Enix describes the goal as preserving the feel of the original pixel sprites while reworking them so they display clearly on modern high-resolution screens.
That means the remasters use a new pixel-art layer with cleaner edges, more consistent proportions and assets designed for contemporary resolutions. The visual language remains deliberately 2D and pixel-based rather than replacing the games with polygonal character models or a fully modern 3D style.
What changes on an actual playthrough
- Characters, enemies, environments and interface elements are presented in newly drawn assets rather than the exact original sprite sheets.
- High-resolution rendering makes the artwork readable on current monitors and televisions without relying on the blurry scaling associated with many older console displays.
- The redraw is an interpretation of the originals. “Faithful” describes the intended style and composition, not a pixel-for-pixel preservation of every shape.
If your priority is seeing the exact NES or SNES graphics as they appeared on original hardware, the original release or an accurately configured emulator remains the more literal archive. If you want the same 2D identity with assets built for a modern display, Pixel Remaster is the newer presentation.

Rearranged music under the original composer’s oversight
The background music was rearranged under the oversight of original composer Nobuo Uematsu. Square Enix says the arrangements followed two themes: “following tradition” and “proper evolution.” The intent is to keep the recognizable melodies while giving them a fuller modern presentation.
Sound effects were recreated by Square Enix’s sound team. As with the sprites, this is a reconstruction rather than a direct playback of the original console audio hardware.

Original-based music switches
PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch releases include selectable rearranged or original-based music. Steam also received an original-BGM switch in the feature update released on 31 January 2024. The wording “original-based” is important: these options let you choose the version supplied by that remaster, but they do not turn the game into a hardware-perfect NES or SNES audio emulator.
Platform menus can differ, so check the in-game configuration screen for the title and system you own. The existence of the switch is documented for PS4, Switch and Steam; do not assume identical audio controls on every other release.
Interface and convenience systems
Modern menus and a common control philosophy
The interface was redesigned across the collection. Menus are intended to be easier to read and navigate on current displays, and the six games use a more consistent presentation than their original releases did. The remasters also add an auto-battle function, allowing repeated battles to proceed without manually selecting every command.
Bestiary, illustration gallery and music player
Three collection-wide additions are especially useful for completionists and longtime fans:
- Bestiary: an in-game reference for encountered enemies.
- Illustration gallery: a place to view artwork associated with the remaster collection.
- Music player: an in-game way to listen to the arranged soundtrack and, where offered, the alternate original-based tracks.
These features change how you document a playthrough, but they do not add a new story campaign. They are reference and presentation tools layered onto the original-release game content.

Saving and routine play
Saving is easier to manage than in the original menu flow, and the general interface reduces friction around ordinary tasks. Exact save behavior still depends on the individual game and platform, so treat “easier saving” as a convenience improvement rather than a promise of identical save rules across all six titles.
Encounter and experience controls by platform
The most substantial optional changes are the controls that let you tune the rate of random encounters and experience gain. They are not available in the same form on every release.
| Platform or update | Documented options | Date or context |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch | Selectable rearranged or original-based music; default or pixel font; encounter disabling; experience multipliers from 0× to 4× | Features listed in Square Enix’s console launch announcement (2023) |
| Steam | Encounter on/off and experience multipliers from 0× to 4×; pixel-font and original-BGM switches; other remaster features | Feature update released 31 January 2024 |
| Mobile | Encounter on/off and experience multipliers from 0× to 4×; gamepad support; other remaster features | Feature update released 31 January 2024 |
How to interpret the 0×–4× range
The multiplier range is an option, not a mandatory rebalance. At 0×, the setting prevents experience gain; at higher values, battles award experience at an accelerated rate relative to the normal setting. Encounter disabling similarly lets you stop random battles when you want to explore, reach a destination or avoid over-leveling through backtracking.
Because these controls can remove a major source of challenge and pacing, they are best treated as tools for a self-imposed ruleset. Leave them at their normal setting for a closer approximation of the original progression, or adjust them when you are replaying a game and want to reduce repetition.
Balance: adjusted, but not universally easier or harder
Square Enix says overall game balance received tweaks and adjustments while respecting the originals. That statement does not establish a single difficulty direction for the entire collection. It is not accurate to describe every Pixel Remaster as universally easier, universally harder or unchanged in every mechanical detail.

Balance can include combat values, progression pacing, menus and other practical adjustments. Without title-specific evidence, the safest comparison is that Pixel Remaster aims to preserve the original experience while making measured changes. If you are comparing a particular boss, spell, weapon or encounter table, verify that game’s documented behavior rather than applying a collection-wide rule.
Content scope: what “faithful” leaves out
Stories remain intact
Square Enix’s FAQ says no changes were made to the stories. The principal narrative arcs, characters and sequence of events therefore remain those of the original NES/SNES releases.
Earlier remake additions are not all included
Previous versions of these games appeared on multiple systems and sometimes added material. Pixel Remaster is based on the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo versions, so it should not be treated as a container for every GBA, PSP, WonderSwan or 3D-remake addition. The exact set of omitted material varies by game and by the earlier release being used as a comparison.
This is the key buying qualification: a player seeking a specific later-port dungeon, boss, class, item, scene or other bonus should identify that feature first and confirm whether the Pixel Remaster includes it. The collection’s own additions—such as the gallery, bestiary, music player and optional progression controls—do not replace every piece of content added in earlier remakes.
Original release versus later-port priorities
| If you value… | Pixel Remaster is designed to provide… | Check another version if you specifically need… |
|---|---|---|
| Original story and broad game structure | The NES/SNES narrative foundation with modern presentation | A particular later-remake story scene or bonus episode |
| Classic 2D identity on a current display | Redrawn high-resolution pixel art | The exact original hardware sprites and rendering behavior |
| Updated listening options | Rearranged music, plus original-based selections on supported platforms | An untouched hardware audio signal |
| Convenience | Auto-battle, redesigned menus, bestiary, galleries and optional encounter/experience controls | A later port whose unique extras are not carried over |
Which version should you buy?
Choose Pixel Remaster when you want a coherent modern edition
Pixel Remaster is the strongest fit if you want all six games presented with a common visual and interface philosophy, readable high-resolution art, rearranged music and built-in conveniences. It is also the practical choice for players who want encounter controls or experience multipliers, provided their platform supports those settings.

Choose an original release or faithful original-format option when preservation is the priority
If “original” means exact sprites, original menus, original sound hardware behavior and the unmodified pacing of the console release, Pixel Remaster is an interpretation rather than a museum-grade reproduction. Use the original release or a preservation-focused setup for that goal.
Choose a specific earlier port when its bonus content is essential
A player buying for a particular GBA, PSP, WonderSwan or 3D-remake addition should not assume Pixel Remaster contains it. Compare the feature list of the exact version that introduced the desired content with the Pixel Remaster release for the game in question.
Use the platform feature list as the final tie-breaker
PS4 and Switch document the broadest set of selectable presentation and progression options in the launch material. Steam and mobile gained important parity features on 31 January 2024, but the sets are not identical: Steam received pixel-font and original-BGM switches, while mobile received gamepad support. Confirm the current patch and in-game options before purchasing, especially if one of those controls is decisive.

Before buying, answer these questions in order:
- Do you need the original story? Pixel Remaster keeps the stories unchanged according to Square Enix.
- Do you need exact original graphics? If yes, select an original-format release; Pixel Remaster uses redrawn sprites.
- Do you prefer arranged music or an original-based option? Check whether your platform offers the music switch you want.
- Will you use encounter or experience controls? Confirm that your platform and current patch expose the 0×–4× multipliers and encounter toggle.
- Are you seeking a later-port bonus? Identify the exact addition and verify it separately; Pixel Remaster is not an all-port compilation.
- Do you want one consistent interface for I–VI? That is a central reason to choose the collection.
Common misconceptions and their corrections
“Pixel Remaster is every version combined.”
No. It starts from the original NES/SNES releases and omits some additions from previous remakes. Its new features are presentation and convenience systems, not a guarantee that every historical bonus has been restored.
“The new graphics are just filters over the old sprites.”
No. The playable characters and other assets were redrawn in an updated pixel style for high-resolution displays. The result aims for continuity of feel, not pixel identity.
“Every platform has exactly the same options.”
No. PS4, Switch, Steam and mobile have overlapping but different documented controls. Steam and mobile received a feature update on 31 January 2024, and their additions are not identical.
“The balance is definitely easier.”
Square Enix describes balance tweaks and adjustments without declaring a collection-wide increase or decrease in difficulty. Make title-specific claims only when evidence for that game supports them.

Bottom line
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is a modernization of the six original NES/SNES-era games: unchanged stories, redrawn high-resolution pixel art, rearranged music, recreated sound effects, redesigned menus and practical additions such as auto-battle, a bestiary, galleries and a music player. Supported platforms add encounter controls, experience multipliers and alternate presentation settings. Its limitation is equally important: it is not a definitive archive of every GBA, PSP, WonderSwan or 3D-remake extra. Buy it for a coherent, convenient and contemporary version of the original games; choose another edition when exact original presentation or a specific later-port bonus is your priority.
