Controller troubleshooting depends on whether you have the Steam or Windows 10/11 edition.
First identify the edition and the symptom
Square Enix’s troubleshooting advice varies by problem, so identify both before changing settings. The Steam edition and the Windows 10/11 version also differ in gamepad compatibility.
- Crash, failure to launch, or black screen: use Steam’s file-validation steps if you own the Steam edition.
- Crash during gameplay: try the display, driver, security-software, and peripheral checks below.
- Controller input or navigation trouble: check the edition and controller input standard.
- Whole-PC crash, shutdown, or blue screen: treat this as possible system or hardware instability, not automatically as a game-only fault.
Fix a crash, startup failure, or black screen on Steam
Square Enix recommends validating the installation when the Windows PC version crashes, will not start, or displays a black screen. In Steam, use this path:
- Open Library and right-click FINAL FANTASY IX.
- Select Properties, then Local Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let Steam complete the check.
This checks whether the installation files are present and properly installed; it does not establish that every possible cause has been ruled out. If the problem continues, Square Enix advises contacting its support team. The cited validation steps are specifically for Steam and should not be assumed to match the Windows 10/11 version’s menus.

Work through crashes during gameplay
For a crash that happens while playing, Square Enix lists several troubleshooting actions. Its guidance does not rank them by likelihood of success, so try them as targeted checks rather than guaranteed fixes.
- Change display mode: switch between windowed and fullscreen.
- Lower resolution: reduce the game’s display resolution and check whether play becomes stable.
- Update graphics drivers: install an appropriate current driver for your graphics hardware.
- Check security software and firewall settings: see whether they are monitoring or blocking the game. Do not leave protection disabled as a general workaround.
- Disconnect peripherals temporarily: unplug nonessential connected devices and see whether the crash still occurs.
- Reinstall the game if needed: use this after the simpler checks have not resolved the issue.
Separate a game crash from a PC-level crash
If only Final Fantasy IX closes or freezes, that is different from the entire computer shutting down, restarting, or showing a blue screen. Square Enix says a system-level crash may be hardware-related. The symptom alone does not identify the faulty component, so avoid treating it as proof that the game is responsible.

For a general PC crash, Square Enix also recommends confirming that the game is on its latest version, updating graphics drivers, restarting the PC, and reinstalling if necessary. If you contact support, its guidance asks for diagnostic files: Msinfo (.nfo) and Dxdiag output. Follow the instructions on the support page for producing and submitting them.

Square Enix lists Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input controllers as partially supported. That does not guarantee every model or every function will work. It also warns: “Players may be required to use keyboard and mouse to navigate a portion of the game.” Keep a keyboard and mouse available if a gamepad cannot reach a menu or other section. An Xbox controller for PC may be a reasonable input-device choice if you need one, but buying a controller is not a documented remedy for crashes or black screens.

Steam’s listing for this game gives these requirements. They describe the game listing, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current PC or Steam Client configuration.

Separately, Steam states that its Client supports Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. The game listing’s older minimum-OS information and the Steam Client’s policy are different facts; meeting the listed minimum hardware does not by itself establish current compatibility.
