Materia is Final Fantasy VII Remake’s modular equipment system. You socket it into weapon and armor slots to grant spells, commands, passive bonuses, support effects, or summons. Equipped materia earns its own AP and levels independently of the character. Connected slots let compatible Support materia modify another materia, while the same Elemental pairing behaves offensively in a weapon and defensively in armor. The game does not use one universal AP requirement or one verified mastery rule for every materia, so plan around each orb’s displayed progression rather than imported rules from the 1997 original.
What materia does in Final Fantasy VII Remake
Materia are equipable orbs that let you customize each playable character without permanently changing that character’s base role. They can be moved between party members and placed in available weapon or armor slots. A weapon’s slots determine how many effects you can carry, while linked slots determine whether a Support materia can interact with another orb.
The game’s materia families are useful shorthand when planning a build:

| Command | Additional battle commands | Giving a character options beyond the default command set |
| Complete | Passive or standalone bonuses | Improving a character without requiring a linked partner |
| Summoning | Summon abilities when the encounter and equipment rules allow them | Calling a summon during eligible battles |
Categories describe a materia’s role, not a universal socket rule. A blue Support materia normally needs a compatible target and a connected pair of slots; simply carrying two useful orbs on the same item does not guarantee an effect.

How to equip and move materia
Open the game’s Materia & Equipment menu, select a character, and choose the weapon or armor whose slots you want to edit. Select an empty slot to insert an orb, or select an occupied slot to replace or remove it. You can then move the materia to another character’s equipment when you want to change a build, concentrate AP on one orb, or prepare for a different encounter.
- Pause the game and open Materia & Equipment.
- Select the character whose loadout you want to change.
- Choose the weapon or armor section and inspect the slot layout. A connected pair is shown as two linked sockets.
- Place ordinary Magic, Command, Complete, or Summoning materia in a free slot.
- For a Support effect, place the Support orb and its compatible target in the two sockets of one connected pair.
- Confirm the displayed effect before leaving the menu, then test the setup in a safe encounter if the interaction is unfamiliar.
Equipment can have different numbers and arrangements of slots. Before removing an orb, note which pair it occupied: moving it into an unlinked slot can silently disable the support effect even though both materia remain equipped.
What AP does and how materia levels
AP is progression currency for materia, not experience for the character wearing it. A materia earns AP while equipped and advances through its own levels. As it levels, many materia unlock stronger spell tiers, additional commands, or improved effects. The exact progression is materia-specific; there is no single AP cost that applies to every orb.
Keep an orb equipped when you want it to progress. Removing it, leaving it in your inventory, or handing it to a reserve character stops that orb’s contribution until it is equipped again. If several characters carry copies of the same type, each copy tracks its own progression rather than sharing one global level.
How to check progress
In the Materia & Equipment screen, highlight an orb to view its current level and the next effect in its progression. Use that display as the authoritative target for your copy. Guides often summarize broad behavior, but a complete, dependable AP table for every materia is not established here, so avoid promises such as “every orb masters after the same number of battles.”

Why AP Up matters
AP Up is a Support option that increases AP gained by the materia linked to it. To use it, put AP Up in one socket of a connected pair and the materia you want to level in the other. The best target depends on your plan: you might accelerate a frequently used spell, a recovery option, or a newly acquired orb that otherwise would remain underleveled. The effect is a progression aid, not an instant level-up, and it does not make an unlinked pair work.
How do linked materia slots work?
Linked slots are physically connected sockets on one weapon or armor piece. They are the condition that allows a Support materia to modify a compatible partner. Two materia on the same equipment item but in separate, unconnected sockets behave as independent materia.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify a pair of sockets joined by a visible connection.
- Place the Support materia in one socket and its intended target in the other.
- Check the menu description for the resulting interaction. If no combined effect appears, the pair may be incompatible or the sockets may not actually be linked.
- Use the weapon or armor context to determine whether the effect is offensive, defensive, or otherwise altered by placement.
Compatibility is specific rather than universal. A blue Support orb cannot automatically modify every Magic or Command orb. The practical test is the displayed interaction for that pair, not the color alone.
| Support pairing example | Requirement | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental + Fire, Ice, Lightning, or Wind | Both must occupy one connected pair | The linked element is applied according to whether the pair is in a weapon or armor |
| Magnify + Healing | Magnify and the healing materia must be connected | The healing spell can be extended to multiple allies, trading focused output for wider coverage |
| AP Up + a target materia | AP Up must be linked to the orb you want to progress | The target receives increased AP gain while the pair remains equipped |
What Elemental does in a weapon versus armor
Elemental is the clearest example of why slot location matters. Link Elemental to an elemental Magic materia such as Fire, Ice, Lightning, or Wind, then decide whether the pair belongs on a weapon or armor:
| Placement | Result | Best when you want to |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Add the linked element to attacks | Exploit an enemy weakness or give basic strikes elemental coverage |
| Armor | Gain protection against the linked element | Reduce the danger from an enemy or area built around that element |
The game’s Elemental effect has tiers, but exact percentages and tier thresholds are not stated reliably enough here to quote. Treat the menu’s current description as the operative information and do not assume that a weapon pairing and an armor pairing produce the same numerical result.

Choosing the element
Match the linked spell to the encounter you are preparing for. A weapon setup is most valuable when attacks can repeatedly connect with the chosen weakness. An armor setup is more valuable when survival depends on resisting a predictable elemental source. If the next area is unknown, leave the pair uncommitted until enemy behavior makes the choice clear; changing the same linked pair between weapon and armor is often more useful than carrying two unrelated elemental setups.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing Magnify without wasting the slot
Magnify is a Support materia whose value comes from changing a compatible spell’s targeting. When linked with Healing, it can extend the spell to multiple allies. That broad coverage is not automatically superior: a single-target cast can be preferable when one character is in critical condition and you need the strongest focused recovery available.
- Choose broad targeting when several party members need help or when the encounter repeatedly damages the whole group.
- Choose single-target use when only one ally is hurt, when conserving resources matters, or when a focused cast is more efficient for the situation.
- Recheck the connection after changing equipment; Magnify in an unlinked socket is only an unequipped support idea, not an active effect.
What “mastering” means in Remake
In practical terms, mastering means advancing a materia through its complete displayed progression so that no further level is shown for that copy. The orb must earn AP while equipped, and the final level and unlocked effect depend on that materia. The available guidance does not establish a complete, dependable AP-total table or a universal rule that every mastered orb creates a duplicate.
Do not import assumptions from the 1997 original. In particular, do not promise that finishing one orb always generates another copy, or quote a single mastery AP number for all materia. Instead:
- Read the orb’s own level and next-effect text in the equipment menu.
- Keep the orb equipped during battles where you want progress.
- Use AP Up when the linked target is worth accelerating.
- Record whether you need the orb’s unlocked ability now or are deliberately completing its progression for a later build.
If the menu shows a final level or no further unlock, treat that displayed state as your completion point. Claims about hidden rewards or duplicate creation require a game-specific source stronger than the general leveling guidance.

How summon materia are equipped
Summon materia follow the same broad equipment idea but may be tied to downloadable content, edition entitlements, and battle eligibility. For specified downloaded summons, Square Enix’s support instructions direct you to open Materia & Equipment, enter Weapons, and equip the summon there. The menu becomes available only after the story reaches the required point.
That instruction does not establish that every summon is downloadable content, nor that every platform or edition grants the same summon. If a summon is missing, verify the game edition and entitlement, progress far enough to unlock the menu, and check the weapon section rather than looking only in armor slots.
Practical materia plans for common goals
Building elemental offense
- Identify the element that matches the encounter.
- Link Elemental with the corresponding elemental Magic materia in a weapon’s connected pair.
- Keep the character using that weapon in the active party so the elemental attacks are actually available.
- Move the pair to armor instead if the fight’s elemental damage is a larger threat than your need for extra attack coverage.
Keeping the party alive
- Equip a healing materia on the character who can reliably spend ATB on recovery.
- Add Magnify only when the connected pair and the encounter justify area coverage.
- For a single wounded ally, use the healing materia without Magnify or choose the appropriate focused option.
- Reserve AP Up for a target you expect to keep equipped long enough to benefit from the accelerated progression.
Leveling a new or neglected orb
- Put the orb on a character who will participate in upcoming battles.
- Link AP Up to it if an available connected pair supports that combination.
- Avoid swapping the target out immediately after each fight; interrupted equipment time slows its progress.
- Check the next unlock periodically so you can stop accelerating it once the desired effect is available.
Troubleshooting: when a materia effect is not working
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Two materia are equipped but no combined description appears | The sockets are separate or the pair is incompatible | Move both into a visibly connected pair and verify the supported combination |
| Elemental works differently than expected | The pair is on armor rather than a weapon, or vice versa | Place the linked pair according to whether you want attack coverage or elemental protection |
| A materia is not gaining AP | It is not currently equipped, or you are checking a different copy | Equip that specific orb and confirm its level in the Materia & Equipment menu |
| Magnify does not affect the intended spell | The spell is not in the connected partner slot or is not a compatible target | Rebuild the connected pair and check the displayed interaction before entering battle |
| A downloaded summon cannot be found | The story has not unlocked the menu, or the edition lacks the entitlement | Reach the required point, then check Materia & Equipment > Weapons and verify the edition or DLC entitlement |
Edition and platform cautions
The core ideas in this guide apply to the Final Fantasy VII Remake game, including versions with additional content, but downloadable summons, menu timing, and item entitlements can vary by edition and platform. A physical Deluxe Edition has been described as including the base game, Cactuar Summoning Materia, a physical soundtrack, and a physical artbook; that packaging is an edition detail, not a guarantee of identical digital entitlements on every platform or in every region. Check the copy you own before assuming a summon is included.
Likewise, AP values, exact Elemental tiers, current retail availability, and platform-specific differences should be read from the game version in front of you. The reliable, transferable rules are that equipped materia level independently, linked slots are required for Support interactions, and equipment location can change the result.

Quick Recap
A quick pre-battle checklist
- Are the materia you need equipped on characters who will actually fight?
- Are Support and target materia in a visibly connected pair?
- Does the pair match the encounter’s element or targeting needs?
- Is Elemental on a weapon for damage or armor for protection, as intended?
- Is AP Up linked to the specific orb you want to level?
- Have you checked each orb’s own next-level text instead of relying on a universal AP or mastery claim?
- If a summon is missing, have you checked the Weapons section, story unlock, edition, and entitlement?
