If Windows shows File System Error (-2147219196) when you open Microsoft Photos, start with low-impact app and update checks, then use Windows’ built-in Repair or Reset options. Microsoft’s published guidance covers general app problems, not a guaranteed fix for this particular code, and community reports do not establish one common cause.
What the error means—and what is known
Microsoft Q&A users have reported seeing this error while opening photographs in Photos, and a later report describes it with Photos and other apps, including Calculator. These are individual community reports, not a confirmed diagnosis. They do not show that every instance has the same cause or that a particular repair will work for everyone. Microsoft Q&A
Microsoft’s official instructions explain how to repair, reset, update, or reinstall apps, but do not identify a root cause or promise a code-specific fix. Work through the steps below in order, stopping when the affected app works.
Try these fixes in order
1. Close and reopen the app
Close Photos completely, then open it again and retry. If the message appears for a photo, note whether it affects one image or several. If another image viewer is available, you can try opening the same file there to see whether the problem is limited to Photos. That comparison may help narrow what is failing, but it is not a definitive diagnosis.

2. Check Windows and Microsoft Store updates
Install available Windows updates, then check for app updates in Microsoft Store. Microsoft includes these checks in its guidance for Store-app problems; they are sensible early steps, not a guarantee that the error will disappear. Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guide
3. Repair the affected app
Repair is a built-in option that attempts to fix an app without replacing it. Microsoft notes that not every app offers Repair or Reset. Microsoft’s app-repair guidance

- Windows 11: Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find the affected app, select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if shown.
- Windows 10: Select Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select the affected app and choose Advanced options if shown.
- Select Repair if it is available. Reopen the app and check whether it now works.
4. Reset the app if Repair does not help
Return to the app’s Advanced options page and select Reset if available. Reset is a stronger app-level action than Repair; check the confirmation prompt before proceeding, because the app may lose locally stored data or settings. Reopen the app afterward and test it again.

If you need to view photos in the meantime
Microsoft says Photos Legacy remains available for people who prefer the older Photos app. It can serve as an alternative for viewing images while you troubleshoot, but Microsoft does not describe it as a repair for error -2147219196. Microsoft’s Photos app help

If the error affects several apps, or persists after the steps above, seek Windows support rather than assuming a particular cause. The available reports and Microsoft guidance do not establish that this code means a disk is failing, a file system is corrupt, permissions are wrong, or a specific update is responsible. A full Windows reset is not a first-line response to an app-level symptom.

If you use Windows 10, Microsoft says free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after October 14, 2025.
